The shower was cold unless you kept it running for ten minutes. The second night I turned on the water some time before I got ready to take the shower. There are no blinds on the bathroom window so you feel exposed when sitting on the toilet. So I turned out the lights since I like to have my privacy in the bathroom. The second lock on the room-door was broken and the room felt unsafe since right outside the window was a passway for the neighbours and anybody could have opened these old windows easily and get in. All in all the whole time in the Hotel Gates Novum Berlin felt depressing and unsafe. Like what hotels were like in the 1980s. But this is 2013! I will never stay in this hotel again and cannot recommend it at all. Sorry.

German efficiency for sure. The hotel is in more of a neighborhood area which we really liked as there were many restaurants, retail shops, coffee shops, and a beer hall all within walking distance. There was a Rewe right across the street where we bought water, fruits, and snacks to keep in our room along with a coffee and pastry place near it. There is also a U-Bahn train station within a 5-10 minute walk with more shops and places to eat along the way, and a bus stop right near the hotel entrance which we used and was very convenient. It seems like more of a boutique hotel so don't expect all the bells and whistles of the larger name brands, but it does more than enough to accommodate for a very nice stay with reasonable pricing.

I didn't request a new room because my trip was long and it would have required too much energy to get a new one. The room I had was also very far from the nearest elevator. I had to walk down several halls to get there which is bothersome with luggage. Another highlight was the bathroom. The water got very hot very fast. It was a stand up shower that looked very clean. The room felt a bit cramped, but they did manage to fit four beds in one room, which is impressive in itself, especially knowing each bed had their own outlet. There was plenty of table space and the tv seemed to be motion activated. There's a kitchen area in the second floor. The fridge smelled but that's where you find the convenient laundry. There's a vending machine as well which I liked. The only negative about that is that the put different snacks in the same row. Something you want could be behind something you do want which is kind of a tease. The beds were comfortable to me. And the room was very clean upon arrival. The place wasn't expensive so I think you get around what you pay for. If I were management, I would work on the details. The little things that could make you lose faith in the owners. Whether it's double checking to make sure everything works properly and is up to standards. The concepts and idea behind the systems are very efficient and convenient. Execution and attention to detail needs to be improved.

On entering the hotel I was hopeful - modern, comfortable reception area, trendily dark restaurant area leading out to a small back garden - but the reception staff were pretty unfriendly and after waiting for quite a while for my room to be ready I was dismayed to discover I'd been given the disabled room which looked right out on to the street (and yes, people could look straight in too!) Still, it was a pretty comfortable place to sleep and the breakfast next morning was pretty nice too. The coolest part of the hotel was its proximity to a climbing wall / art / squat complex further down Revaler Strasse where we enjoyed a nice beer before our show.

I could see the station from our hotel room - Friendly staff and easy check in and check out - Clean budget hotel - Lots of nearby food places making it easy to get food in a pinch (Food factory had a good variety of food and Berlin Hbf had a fair share of food as well!) - Decent breakfast buffet Cons: - Pillows were really thin and sheets were kind of rough. It was hard to get a good nights sleep - Wi-Fi was iffy during the entirety of our stay. For some reason, not sure if it was the connection or my phone, but it would keep switching from LTE to wifi. It really sucked since I bought an international phone plan that was dependent on data usage. - No fridge or safe in the room Overall, I would stay in this hotel again because of the close proximity to Berlin's central station. Personally, the pros outweighed the cons due to the fact that I didn't have to walk to far to the hotel after a long day of exploring Berlin. The room was a little tight, but nothing my family and I couldn't manage and the bathroom was a big and clean. If I'm ever in the Berlin area again, I would rebook and stay at this hotel!
