I booked a King sized bed, even sent an email to confirm it. I am not a small fellow, 250lbs. My wife is smaller but with us both on it at the same time it is not much space. This is a "full sized bed" in American terms. I ask the front counter about this and they advised me in Germany "King sized" just means one bed not two twins. None of the other two hotels I stayed at in Germany used this cultural norm I was unaware of. Also the bathroom is the size of a coat closet. When I stand in the shower my shoulders are an inch from the walls. The safe in the room was locked when we arrived, I will try and address this tomorrow. The neighborhood is decent, but pretty far from the city center or east side with most things I want to do. (I will own that one but it can be hard to tell when you don't know a city) When I discussed the bed issue the clerk did offer me a free bowl of fruit. So I may be sleeping on the floor but I will have an abundance of apples when I do it. If you are looking for a throwback 80s experience maybe this is for you. However do not be mislead that this hotel is anything close to the accommodations of an average Best Western. Also the elevator holds 4 people max, but that is being extremely generous Update: We were moved on day two to a better room with a bed we could both fit on Final update, the staff got us moved to a much better room where we could get a good night sleep after a fun day in Berlin.

Hotel Tiergarten is central and one stop from the main station with the TXL bus (or about 15…read moreminutes from the airport with the same bus). Friendly staff and very quiet rooms at least towards the back -- I could even open my windows at night. The breakfast is Ok. The rooms are clean, but come in very varying size from tiny to huge. This is probably due to the old building the hotel is in. If you like old buildings and want to stay in a central place at a budget price, you are right here.

But for a single traveler, it is adequate since basically you're not in the hotel all day. My room would be a tight squeeze for two people. It's a little far from the city center and it's not in the nicest of neighborhoods at first glance. There's a lot of graffiti and dark areas from the train to the hotel. However, I realized there's just a lot of graffiti in Berlin in general. The breakfast is pretty sparse, but typical European. Croissants, cold cuts, coffee, yogurt, etc. There isn't a real kitchen so don't expect hot food.

The room is very comfortable, makes excellent use of a small space, and comprises of all the basics one would need. Pros: -Excellent shower with a large waterfall shower head -Very clean -Comfortable bed -Small flat screen TV -Hair dryer in bathroom -Short, 5 minute walk to S-bahn metro, Bellevue stop - only a few stops away from great destinations -Friendly & helpful staff -Safe, primarily residential neighborhood -Wifi code that comes along with room (included in the price of the room) -Wonderful basic breakfast spread (coffee/tea, juice, cold cuts, croissants, bread, cheese, veggies, fruit, cereal, eggs, etc for an additional 9 euros) Cons: -No telephone in room -No safe to keep valuables locked inside -No peephole on door I shared a room with a friend of mine. While space was a bit tight, it was completely fine and we didn't spend that much time in the room anyways. The hotel was wonderful overall. I'd definitely stay here again and certainly recommend it to anyone visiting Berlin.

The real joy of a small backpacking hostel is the sense of community one gets. The staff are largely friendly and accommodating (be sure to tell them if something seems to miss the mark!), and the bathrooms were kept in good clean order. The bed was comfortable enough, and every room has windows for good circulation of air. The wifi is a bit slow - that's the only detractor. (The showers worked well and there were sufficient bathrooms for the small hostel.) I would recommend staying here if you do not insist on being at city center. It's easily accessible by public transport (s-Bahn and u-bahn).

Love Love this hostel…read more It is by far the most affordable hostel to stay at and enjoy the staff that work there as well. I met so many cool people at this hostel and I enjoy the neighborhood because it was so walkable and nearby many transit lines to get around as well. East Berlin is amazing and I will stay here again.
