The playground is split into an older kids side and a younger kids side, with 1 entry (and a fence surrounding). Visibility isn't perfect but the single entry point is great if you want to stand in the middle to keep an eye on kiddos. Great spot for play dates (come with a coffee!). There are portapotties at the park and a real restroom a small walk down the path. Park is great for kids to use their imaginations and play, which is so much fun. Great spot to bring a ball and play catch or picnic to sit and relax or bikes! Can get hot - wear sunscreen if the weather is nice. Friends said it's also fun to bring bikes or a stroller and hit up the cafe (a bit of distance from the playground) and have some sweet potato fries.

But I'll leave that out and talk objectively. First up, the playground. It's nice, clean, and one of the biggest I went to as a kid. I thought it was really fun then, and it seems to still be the same now. There's plenty of open field space. Some made up for baseball, some just grass ready to run in OR play any game you want. Speaking of baseball, Rister Stadium's right there. As you're driving in, it's on the left. I'm not sure if it technically counts as "part of Tam O'Shanter Park" but it sure feels like it. There is PLENTY of parking. I remember as far back as before they added all the nice new paved lots. This park is also kind of "in a corner" for lack of a better term. What I mean to say is, there's other parks in town that can be right off a street, or even entirely surrounded by streets or other things. This is a big park, and secluded enough. Overall, I find there to be plenty of fun for the entire family. This is a frequently visited park, and very popular. Be sure to check out the drive-thru Christmas Lights every December! With the bridge out, we had to drive to the small parking area to do the 3 miles of forested trails starting at the Oxalis loop. The group camping is very pretty and close to the bathroom facility (2 sink/toilet rooms and 2 rooms with showers on the other side). There are often short lines. Tokens for the shower were 50 cents for 3 minutes. There was a dog who barked endlessly, all night, nearby (not in the park) and some very loud cows so bring your ear plugs!

We travel…read morewith our dog and one of the things I usually look for when exploring a new town is a nice local park where we can bring her along. I'd seen information online suggesting that this location was dog friendly, so I thought this would be an easy stop for us and routed us slightly out of our way to come here. Unfortunately that was not our experience. When we arrived, we discovered that dogs are not allowed in the Japanese Garden area and there were also signs throughout the park indicating that dogs are prohibited in many areas. It seems like they allow leashed dogs in parts of the park, but there are several restricted areas. So if you're traveling with a dog, I would recommend skipping this area entirely. It's not worth trying to decipher where it is and is not okay for you to be. Since we were already here we took turns checking out the gardens themselves and honestly they were pretty underwhelming. I don't know if we caught them at the wrong time of year, but there doesn't seem to be anything here that makes it worth the effort of a trip specifically to come in and see them. The park itself looked nice and people seemed to enjoy walking around the lake, but the gardens just weren't that impressive in my opinion. In hindsight, I really wish we had skipped this stop but if you don't have a dog or don't travel with one, you may enjoy this location.

We were passing through after visiting Olympic Park and looking for a hiking spot in the area. Lake…read moreSylvia seemed like a possibility so we stopped off last Sunday around 10am. There were a few hikers there, but otherwise mostly those preparing to fish. We didn't visit the camping section, but they've got a decent sized day-use area with a good amount of parking, tables, and restrooms. We took the forest loop trail that leads from the lake along the stream through the forest and back around to the day-use, about 2 1/2 miles. There are sections of the trail that are simply gorgeous, and other parts not quite as pretty. But the trail is pretty fun, ups and downs, winding with steps and bridges. While the path is completely passable right now, it was very muddy in many places. A bit precarious at times, as some of the soupiest, slickest spots happened to be on inclines and declines. You'll definitely need waterproof shoes and prepare to get dirty, but Sylvia is good for a quick hike. They've got some interesting educational info along the trail too...and the lake has a very peaceful feeling.

Fishing is aloud (no motor I believe) Dogs on leash Swim at your own risk Drinks aloud (I think ... I see lots of them) Also a group camping site that is at the top of a hill and looks down at the water. Easily fits 8-10 tents and has a covered shelter ! Perfect for a family reunion camping trip and honestly a beautiful place to even consider as a wedding venue.
