Remember summer camp? Dirt roads winding through tall trees? A lake or river with the sun glinting…read moreon it, hinting of a cool way to spend an afternoon? Laughter filtering through and around the cabins? You couldn't wait to go to the art cabin and make sand art, or braid something with that lanyard material. A big bonfire with other campers?Every night. If that was part of your childhood, there's good news, you can experience it all again WITH your kids. Little Mexico Campground is a family-run operation that has a nostalgic summer camp feel to it. It has gotten some negative publicity (guilty...but please read on) but it deserves a closer look. The campground was originally part of a large parcel of land owned by one family. Two large flat areas on either side of Penn Creek (affectionately known as the "Rio Grande" by the original owners) lent themselves to farming, but the land on the far side of the creek wasn't all that large, so in the 1950's, the original owners decided it would be a great place to camp out and enjoy the quiet and the water, which by the way, is enticing on that side as there are rapids which make a delightful sound 24/7. This flat area was named "The Mexico" field. (See the theme here?). It became popular with family and friends, and the original owners figured they were on to something and opened up the larger field on the near side of the river, and named it, wait for it... "Little Mexico". Pretty soon the place was booming, the original owners and their children planted pine saplings to define boundaries of new campsites, ran phone lines to campsites (!), formed a summer baseball league, built a pavilion for rollerskating, installed a fully lined swimming pond, and another pond for bumper boats. The second owners purchased the camp in the early 1980's and carried on with the traditions, adding a huge swimming pool. Little Mexico continued to prosper with mainly seasonal campers but was sold to owners who did not tend to the property and let it fall into disrepair. The current owners, Steve and Missy, took possession in 2012, and have been steadily working to improve the infrastructure of the camp and make it more appealing to weekend campers. There are still some challenges as there are some legacy issues from the previous owners, but returning campers assure me that each year they come back, Steve has upgraded something or installed a new feature. This year a mini golf course was added,and the jump pad and laser tag are also quite new. Two small sheds near the pool offer crafts and ceramics. Bingo is held on Friday nights, and there are themed weekends throughout the summer. Pro Tip- if a quiet space to read or nap is your definition of a great campsite, then grab one of the back-in sites across the ridge, 156-143 are CHOICE, but do not include sewer (The owner will pump you out for a small fee, or you can swing through the dump station on this side before you leave. Most sites there are big rig friendly, there were lots of big 5th wheels there when we camped. The bridge is 13' 10" so most rigs will fit just fine. If you love to socialize, then the near side is your go to. You will be close to everything so reserve well ahead for a back-in spot (208-218) with river access. Speaking of access, the creek, which is actually more of a river, is slow-moving as it passes by the near side campground but picks up to some quick moving rapids as it rounds the bend by the far side campground. Bring your water shoes or sandals, canoe, kayak (rentals available), or tube, as floating down the Penn Creek on a hot summer day is one of the main attractions at Little Mexico. You can put in a mile up river or several miles up for a longer float. Fishing is also popular, so bring your rods and flies. Little Mexico is a great place to relax and enjoy yourself if you get the right spot. As with any campground, if there are noisy people, barking dogs, or unruly behavior, notify the owner promptly, they will take care of the people responsible so that you can enjoy your stay.

So when a family member approached me and asked me if I wanted to stay at this inn, I was surprised; but, after learning more, I excitedly said yes. This was the right decision and led to a fantastic and relaxing weekend away from the city. This nature inn sits in Bald Eagle State Park and has 16 guest rooms, a handful of meeting room/library spaces, and is absolutely beautiful. The rooms on one side of the inn overlook a lake, with the other side facing a cluster of trees. My relative and I ended up facing the trees, but we were totally fine with that - especially since the fall foliage was starting to set in. We were on the 2nd floor, so we were able to enjoy the view from a private balcony throughout the weekend; it looked like the 1st floor rooms had little patios instead, so no matter what, guest rooms have some sort of outdoor seating. Normally, guests would all be able to enjoy a communal patio and fire pit here. Granted, some other guests (as it appeared that a large group came here together) did go ahead and enjoy this space. My relative and I did not because avoiding people is a must these days, but still, what we saw of these spaces looked great. Definitely something to remember for the future. Speaking of avoiding people - it's 2020, so naturally, my relative and I were focused on what the inn is doing to protect guests. The answer is, plenty! Cleaning and sanitizing the inn is a big thing, naturally. The small size of the inn definitely helps, as it's not particularly big and doesn't lend itself to the gathering of huge crowds. Masks are a must and for the most part, this rule was adhered to; I passed by a couple of guests that I think just forgot theirs momentarily, but staff definitely took the rule seriously. Their dining room is currently closed - all meals are prepped and offered as take-out or delivery. Fortunately, the rooms include a fridge, so it was super easy for my relative and me to bring snacks and store our leftovers so that we were stocked and well-fed all weekend. Also, while you can request items that you need for your room, daily turn-down service is not happening right now - that way, only guests are in their rooms during their stay. The result was that I felt extremely relaxed while I was in the inn, knowing that my space and health was being respected and taken seriously. A couple of notes - the mattresses here were admittedly very hard and uncomfortable, and while they didn't ruin our stay, it's still nice to have my comfy soft bed back. I don't really hold this against the inn though since, frankly, I think all hotel beds are uncomfortable by default. Speaking of things I don't hold against them - this is a nature inn, so you better expect some of the local wildlife to try to get into your room. When I first opened my balcony door some stinkbugs fell onto me because they had gathered around the door frame - whoops! The good news is that the door itself was very well sealed, so the little jerks couldn't get in when the door was closed. Again, I don't hold that against the inn at all, seeing as it's set right in a state park. Still, I think it's fair to remind other guests and readers that when you visit a nature park, you better be ready to experience everything nature throws at you. So much so that when we found that campground booked for the summer we took the advice of a co worker and stayed at Fantasy Island nearby. If you're looking for a simple, affordable, fun for the kids camping retreat this is your spot. Located right on the Susquehanna the (seasonal) riverfront spots had their own boat slips. The rest of the campground wasn't wooded in the least which I appreciated, but the sites were pretty tight. Each site had a concrete patio and full hook up including cable and wifi - although I was unable to connect to the wifi (hubby did though). At only $42/night in the prime season the price couldn't be beat! The campground was small and simple with one bathhouse. It wasn't horrible but there were some critters. It was equipped with a table/chairs in front of a mirror for a makeshift vanity area to do your makeup separate from the sink. That was a smart touch. They also rented out one cabin. I didn't see any areas for tents. There were about 100 camp sites. They also had a playground and volleyball net. I was told that usually a food truck parks inside the premises. The store was small but did sell the essentials at a very good price. Imagine my surprise when I ran out of suntan lotion and picked up a full size tube of a kid formula spf 50 for only $2!!!! The dollar store costs more than that! They also had ice cream novelties ranging in price from .35 cents to a max of $2, flip flops and floaties were only a buck. They did close early at 7pm, but the attached rec room/gathering place/arcade combo was open at all hours. I noticed in the rec room they had bikes/scooters you could rent (we didn't inquire) as well as books. There was a big screen tv with dvd as well as a huge, comfortable leather sectional sofa. You could watch your movies there but they didn't supply dvds. A pool was present complete with a limited number of loungers and covered tables ranging in depth from 3-5'. It was so relaxing on the hottest weekend of the season and usually full of campers. The weekend of our stay was Christmas in July and they went all out. If you signed up your kids at the store Santa called their name and they got a baggie of goodies. The rec area was all decked out for the holidays complete with the tv set on a fireplace mood, complete with crackle noise effects. Several of the campers did elaborate Christmas displays. When I say this campground is simple, it isn't an insult. It's just enough stuff to unwind and have kids get back to being kids; playing on the equipment, swimming in the pool, and playing with other kids. While I do wish they had more activities scheduled, it was nice to just take it easy and let the kids play without a lot of shuffling around to make sure we do and see everything. They did have a potluck dinner the one night which we really enjoyed. The manager was super friendly and involved as were our neighbors who were all seasonal. Guests are free ($3 for pool use - get wrist band at store) and can stay till 10 pm, wish I knew that in advance as we would have had some friends come up for the day. From talking with the seasonals a spot is $1900 per season which runs April 15-Oct 15. At that time you must remove and dismantle your campsite (sheds, rocks, garden, outdoor décor, etc) as township doesn't allow campers to be kept there all year. You can get your same site back if you prefer. They do not rent golf carts. No dogs allowed in any of the buildings, pool area, and playground. As a non dog person I really appreciated that! Overall a very nice, clean, vintage feeling campground, one will we most likely return to when we want some downtime.
