We were in State College for a cheer clinic, and Penn Steaks was just around the corner from our hotel. We met Lance, who both struck up conversations with us and made us feel right at home and even offered us water while we waited. The cheesesteaks were outstanding. Huge portions with perfectly seasoned steak. The next evening we came back for dinner just after they had closed. A woman saw us outside trying to come up with a backup plan and kindly invited us in to see if they could still help. Her husband Brad invited us in as Lance remembered us from the day before and they happily made us sandwiches. They were also cleaning out the ice cream machine from the day and gave us and passerby's free shakes instead of letting them go to waste. The food was amazing, but the kindness and customer service were what really stood out. Penn Steaks is now our State College go to! Check them out!! read more

I love cheesesteaks when they're made correctly, and Penn Steaks got it right! Truly excellent; I wish I visited this place sooner. Super fresh rolls with the right texture that have some give, some squish, but still held up well to being stuffed with the steak, cheese, and add-ins/sauce. Also good quality ribeye steak that's well chopped. I prefer mine with provolone and sweet peppers, along with marinara on top. But honestly, these cheesesteaks are good enough with just steak and cheese. The fries here are shoestring, which is perfect if you don't want soggy fries when you let them sit. Penn Steaks uses beef tallow which gives it a bit more savory taste. I'm not really into beef tallow for frying, yet I still enjoyed then. I'd still prefer Five Guys fries over these. But don't let that stop you from trying them! And the service was fantastic. The person taking my order was polite and helpful. I even met one of the co-owners who was very friendly! A great guy to chit-chat if you like that sort of thing. I learned quite a bit from him during my visit. They sell their cheesesteaks in 6", 9", and 18". The 9" is generous and should satisfy most people. I might be able to finish an 18" if was really hungry and didn't add too much to it, but I'd be in pain afterwards! The 18" is better for sharing. I'll stop by more often for a good cheesesteak. Next time I'll get extra cheese on it. I know I'll probably be addicted to their cheesesteaks sooner or later. Edit: added photo of their cheesesteak read more

$16 for a 9 inch cheesesteak is absolutely outrageous. They also have pretty pricey fries, they're thin, crispy, and honestly very mediocre. The worst part about this cheesesteak is that when I got it with cheese whiz I was assuming considering the price they would have some sort of house-made sauce, but no, the moment I bit into my cheesesteak, I could tell it was that bought in bulk cheap cheese wiz pizzeria's put on there fries. I highly suggest if you're looking for good cheesesteaks in the state College area to go to Ernie's cheesesteaks, you can see in my profile the review I wrote for them. They are a great establishment with great prices, definitely the best cheesesteaks in State College. read more

Food was delicious and exactly how it was described!! The service was quick and Lance was very friendly!!

Great steaks, yummy fries, and friendly service. We enjoyed our lunch! Love all the local decor as well.

They need to determine if they want to be a restaurant or a catering business. We went before the Northwestern game and they were late opening because of doing a catering order and they were behind schedule. The owner gave us some snacks for free but we waited 45 minutes or more for them to open. They pulled this at the Oregon game as well, because they were catering College Game Day! Are you a restaurant or a caterer?? read more

Fantastic! Best cheesesteaks around! Tons of meat and great bread!!!! We make this a must for every State College visit!!!

Mixed feelings about my experience here. Expensive! $18 with tip. I definitely didn't get an $18 chicken cheesesteak when I walked out the door. I didn't clarify, but no onions, peppers, or mushrooms. Just chicken and provolone. Bread was good but the chicken seemed like those frozen chicken cheesesteak patties you throw on the grill and chop up. Not sure this is the case, however. Wasn't especially a large sub, about a foot or so. Overall, the sub was good but not great, and definitely not $18 with tip (see the receipt). The prices are on the board, but I guess I thought the sub would be different and reflect the price. The actual store is very nice. A lot of PSU memorabilia on the walls and self serve kiosks to order your food. read more

First time having a cheesesteak in Philly! Not exactly what I expected but was still good! Meat was more on the moist side than seared. Asked for grilled onions but I guess they have fried onions which are essentially sautéed vs border line caramelize. The onion rings were tasty but getting a little basket of 6 for 6 bucks wasn't a good value. I saw too late they had something called funnel fries. Those looked good but I was full. The place has a sporty vibe and the people working were very nice. read more

LATE NIGHT option in downtown state college. Owner was a character that gave out free waters because the wait was longer than expected. Cool Penn state decor on the walls. Cheese steak came out super hot and greasy. Probably wouldn't go there before midnight. read more

First time here and I ordered a cheesesteak with provolone cheese and onions. Smelled good and looked good. It's about a 10 inch hoagie roll and had enough meat to fill the roll as you can see. Had a very good taste to it. Priced at $12.99 and they charged me $0.50 for the onions. I was a little put off with that. Just roll in the cost of the onions in the total price. Don't nickel, and dime me. I'd be back again when I'm downtown read more

Came in at 7:15 when they close at 8 and said they were done for the night. Dude working just said nah we're done and shook his hand like under his chin. It's cold as and wasted my time walking there. read more

A fantastic and overflowing cheesesteak like it should be! The college vibes given off here exude Penn State, and is the one place you should visit if you're looking for an authentic cheesesteak while in town. It's within walking distance to almost everywhere, and when you get in you can order quickly on a kiosk or at a counter, with plenty of seating and a helpful and smiling wait staff. The fries were perfectly cooked and they had lots of typical side offerings to go with your sandwich. read more

I found my cheesesteak bland. Not much whiz and because it was on the bun, it kind of melted away. Had to add salt and mayo at home. Was surprised they don't offer lettuce or tomatoes etc. Why a tip line?? read more

Visiting from Texas, best cheesesteak I've ever had! I got it with the cooper sharp and a side of sweet peppers. The hoagie was so soft, steak was tender and it had the perfect amount of grease. I also ate the wrapper. The fries were good too! The staff was also a 10/10! Ohio State fans be sure to visit after you lose in a few weeks. Go Hoosiers! read more

Bland. There was no cheese on the cheesesteak. Fries are cold and gross. The staff wasn't helpful.

I placed an online order for pick up. I was a little put off by the order's "convenience fee" and wasn't expecting much. To my great delight the cheesesteak was not only delicious, it was also quite large for the price. Also, the staff were very nice and welcoming. read more

Probably rates as one of most hideously awful steak subs, I have ever attempted to eat in my entire life. I was so salty that it wasn't even edible, I am going to put it out back for a deer lick to see if I can bait a few in with it .......Update! Even animals won't touch it! You would fare better be trying to gnaw your own arm off for food than to attempt one of these iodized missiles! read more

The cheesesteak was ok. The menu is a bit overpriced in general. I can get a cheesesteak for way cheaper and then add the "combo" at $5.99 for some crappy fries and a drink? Sorry but it wasn't worth the price. I'd eat the cheesesteak again but probably not for that price plus nothing on it. read more
