We were in State College for a cheer clinic, and Penn Steaks was just around the corner from our hotel. We met Lance, who both struck up conversations with us and made us feel right at home and even offered us water while we waited. The cheesesteaks were outstanding. Huge portions with perfectly seasoned steak. The next evening we came back for dinner just after they had closed. A woman saw us outside trying to come up with a backup plan and kindly invited us in to see if they could still help. Her husband Brad invited us in as Lance remembered us from the day before and they happily made us sandwiches. They were also cleaning out the ice cream machine from the day and gave us and passerby's free shakes instead of letting them go to waste. I love cheesesteaks when they're made correctly, and Penn Steaks got it right! Truly excellent; I wish I visited this place sooner. Super fresh rolls with the right texture that have some give, some squish, but still held up well to being stuffed with the steak, cheese, and add-ins/sauce. Also good quality ribeye steak that's well chopped. I prefer mine with provolone and sweet peppers, along with marinara on top. But honestly, these cheesesteaks are good enough with just steak and cheese. The fries here are shoestring, which is perfect if you don't want soggy fries when you let them sit. Penn Steaks uses beef tallow which gives it a bit more savory taste. I'm not really into beef tallow for frying, yet I still enjoyed then. I'd still prefer Five Guys fries over these. But don't let that stop you from trying them! And the service was fantastic. The person taking my order was polite and helpful. I even met one of the co-owners who was very friendly! A great guy to chit-chat if you like that sort of thing. I learned quite a bit from him during my visit. They sell their cheesesteaks in 6", 9", and 18". The 9" is generous and should satisfy most people. I might be able to finish an 18" if was really hungry and didn't add too much to it, but I'd be in pain afterwards! The 18" is better for sharing. I'll stop by more often for a good cheesesteak. Next time I'll get extra cheese on it. I know I'll probably be addicted to their cheesesteaks sooner or later. $16 for a 9 inch cheesesteak is absolutely outrageous. They also have pretty pricey fries, they're thin, crispy, and honestly very mediocre. The worst part about this cheesesteak is that when I got it with cheese whiz I was assuming considering the price they would have some sort of house-made sauce, but no, the moment I bit into my cheesesteak, I could tell it was that bought in bulk cheap cheese wiz pizzeria's put on there fries. Mixed feelings about my experience here. Expensive! $18 with tip. I definitely didn't get an $18 chicken cheesesteak when I walked out the door. I didn't clarify, but no onions, peppers, or mushrooms. Just chicken and provolone. Bread was good but the chicken seemed like those frozen chicken cheesesteak patties you throw on the grill and chop up. Not sure this is the case, however. Wasn't especially a large sub, about a foot or so. Overall, the sub was good but not great, and definitely not $18 with tip (see the receipt). The prices are on the board, but I guess I thought the sub would be different and reflect the price. The actual store is very nice. Asked for grilled onions but I guess they have fried onions which are essentially sautéed vs border line caramelize.
