My experience have all been with the Minor Injuries unit (broken toes, sprained ankles etc) and they've always dealt with me quickly and easily. I was last here last week with a sore foot I'd got while running. In the space of less than an hour I was seen by a nurse, x-rayed, sent back to the nurse and told what was wrong with me - because it's a way out of Leeds, you always get such quick service and treatment, and the nurses are always very competent and professional I find. It's a much less stress free occasion than the A & E of the hospitals in the centre of Leeds, so I'd always choose it over those. Splendid.

Three paramedics stood…read morebeside me smoking cigarettes and would not acknowledge me until they were flagged down- after which they rolled there eyes and angrily threw their cigarettes away. I was berated by staff for taking codeine (which I had been prescribed). I waited an entire day in extreme abdominal pain. Every couple of hours a nurse would come over, prod me in the stomach and ask if it hurts, which it clearly did and then told me I needed a scan. Eventually I had the scan at two o'clock the next morning. I had arrived at the hospital at 8am. Everytime I enquired about my situation the nurses would roll there eyes and sigh loudly. I get that the NHS is underfunded and that long waits are to be expected but belittling and ignoring patients who are in pain and scared Is disgraceful. If I'm ever in need of a hospital again I will absolutely take the risk of travelling further away and going to the Royal Hallamshire as I would not put my health into the hands of Northern General again.

No bitchiness or name calling was in my ear shot.No one seemed stressed or under pressure and plenty of staff at all times. When I used my buzzer it was answered promptly. Very clean, tidy hospital with everything in order. The nurses checked on me often and I can honestly say there was not one person there who I thought was incompetent or lacked skills in their profession. The physiotherapists worked well as a team and did everything to help me. A big thank you to the orthopaedic team at this hospital. You should be proud.

Harrogate Hospital is clean and well-run. The ER wait is usually very minimal and the staff are very informative and helpful. The nurses who did my blood work were very friendly and nice. The nurses cannot do enough for patients and are very caring. there are a couple of stores inside the hospitals to buy newspapers/magazines etc which is always a life saver being in hospital. theres a cafe too. the hospital itself is huge like most hospitals are and can be quite easy to get lost in it but the staff are sure to point you in the right direction. also, visiting times are set but the nurses seem to be pretty flexible if you are quiet :-)

Firstly, as a retail outlet (I can't believe I'm saying that) St James', and particularly Gledhow wing, is well over priced. On entering I am reminded of an airport departure lounge and, in common with these, the retailers are aware that they are serving a captive audience and quite obviously have no problem in profiting from peoples misfortune. I'm sure that these shiny new retail units are making lots of money for someone and it's good to know that, somewhere, there are happy people. More worrying was the comment of the assistant in one of these retail units when I commented on the excessive profits. I won't repeat his words but his comment on who profits was clearly racist. As a hospital (yes they still have room for that sort of stuff) I was left feeling saddened and extremely worried. I ha ve been visiting St James' daily for the past three weeks and these are my overall impressions: I have the up-most respect for most of the individuals who provide nursing and support care but, as a qualified nurse, I worried that many staff seem under trained for the role they find themselves in and they are obviously very stressed. It is unacceptable to 'forget' a patients medication, neglect hygiene needs or protect patients from harm. Staffing levels are low and patient care suffers because of this. Recently I spent a night on the assessment ward where there were several patients in the corridor due to lack of space some of whom had been waiting 12 hours for a bed (and some of these patients were planned admissions, asked to come in because a bed was ready for them). Don't even get me started on the cost of parking........
