We went to the peninsula hotel for yum cha on a Sunday afternoon and came with the group that I'd describe as a restaurant's worst nightmare - four couples with four prams (luckily the babies were all wonderfully behaved). The service staff were all very accepting and very playful with the babies and gave us a large area to sit where the prams could also park. They get a big plus for this!
The atmosphere was pretty average and the food was average to good, but nothing surprising. What was wheeled out is the exact same food I've had at every yum cha restaurant: steamed shrimp dumplings, chicken buns, broccoli with oyster sauce, etc. It was all cooked well. There was nothing that tasted bad and a few things were worthy of second helpings. They were missing quite a few of our favourites: mushroom/vegetable dumplings or buns and sesame balls with red bean paste.
The value for the food was really great. We ate quite a bit each and only paid $20 per person.
I'd go back, but it's not a place I'd be drooling over. read more
