Anytime I have extra time to kill in Sewickley I stop at Penguin Bookshop. It is a small locally owned bookstore with a great selection of books for both young and old. They do offer a rewards program if you are a frequent shopper. The carry a wide assortment of books some of which you would find either online or at big box stores and other books by local writers. Some books also include signed copies. They carry classics as well. Although they are pushing many children's books for Christmas I was trying to find a Hanukkah book that would make a good gift for next year. The saleslady was very friendly and helpful. She told me that most of their Hanukkah books were gone but they still had one called "Hanukkah hamster." It took a great deal of effort but she was able to find the last copy for me. They offer free gift wrap but since I was in a hurry I thanked her, paid for it and left. This is a wonderful shop to visit when you are in the Sewickley area and it is worthwhile just to browse around the shop. Located on Beaver St which is the main shopping district of the town, metered street parking is available. read more

I love independent bookstores, and the Penguin does not disappoint. It's a LEED Certified Green Building that is comfortable and inviting. They offer a great selection of children's books and books by local writers. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful. Lots of great events and book signings. Definitely worth the visit. read more

This is a great independent book shop in the heart of Sewickley Village that regularly has author signings and readings, and carries a great selection of new and classic titles for its small size. They will also gift wrap if you ask! I love Shopping Small here. read more

First, realize that this Penguin Bookstore is not the same Penguin Bookstore that anyone who reviewed this shop before 2014 ever saw. This is a new and much smaller version on the other side of Beaver Street. And it's not as engaging. Woeful shortage of available books. A shadow of the original bookstore. This iteration is run by a woman who boasts that she was in "New York publishing" but that doesn't mean she can run a book store. I'm all for local business but I doubt this one will survive. The owner doesn't seem to understand marketing. read more

This is a wonderful little store, with an examplary children's / YA section that takes up the whole second floor. I was impressed with their selection, and they frequently hold author events / signings. (They hosted my debut book launch, in fact.) The assistant manager, Kate, is especially knowledgeable if you're into kid-lit. Obviously, it's cheaper to shop at Amazon or Barnes & Noble, but the experience here, and the helpfulness of the staff, sets this shop at the top of my book-shopping list. read more

Let me preface this review by saying I'm an incorrigible book store snob. I work across the street from what is probably the best book store of its type in the United States, so it takes a lot to impress me. What I enjoyed most about Penguin was how clean and airy the store felt, along with a sizable collection of local interest books. Otherwise, quantity and selection of books were okay, but they carried the books I expected them to carry, but nothing truly interesting or unusual as far as the sections I looked at most carefully (cooking and science.) Came out with a purchase, but probably wouldn't go out of my way to return here. read more

What a charming and quaint bookstore. I absolutely adore independent bookstores and always trying to find one nearby if I'm visiting a new town. Penguin Bookstore is definitely one of my favorites. There is nothing new here. Unlike bookstores that distinguish themselves from the chain stores by offering authors with unique and edgy perspectives, this little shop seems to be just another suburban matron's ticket to retirement. There is no palpable vibe of excitement for life's messy but delicious splendor. For that reason, this shop has only high-prices to offer and is worse than the chains. read more
