Pellston is a small but mighty airport and such a treasure here in northern Michigan. I'd lost something crucial that I needed for trip and arrived after the cutoff for Delta checked luggage. My heart sank as I was mid trip and really needed it. The clerk said he'd ask his supervisor. Then Rob appeared. He is an angel here on earth! Zero promises and I'd likely have to pick up my bags in Pittsburgh (since it was my fault.) With a grateful heart I boarded the plane. This tiny little airport is a pleasure to fly in and out of... it's small, has one restaurant, one baggage claim, one TSA checkpoint, one bathroom for each gender (only outside of the security area - not at the gate), a few car rental companies onsite, a very comfortable sitting area, and not much else. The employees that work here are super friendly but TSA is one of the slowest I've seen. Regardless, if you're needing to be anywhere in Northern Michigan near Petoskey, Charlevoix, Harbor Springs, Cheboygan, Bay Harbor, Boyne, etc... this is your airport! Northern Michigan in the summer is one of my "happy places" and since my family recently had a fabulous visit in the area with no major travel drama (thanks Delta), I hope to be back in the future for years to come. Friendly staff, lovely little airport. Business center with 4 private desks + outlets, a lounge with a fireplace, TV and ample seating, and a restaurant upstairs. As someone else said, security takes a while so don't cut corners with time just because it's a regional airport. I had a wonderful experience here and I would travel out of this airport again. read more

We had to cancel a Monday flight to Detroit so Wednesday flight was quite packed. Going through TSA went quicker than I expected. Also the restaurant up stairs was good for lunch before Detroit and not having a long wait time for the next leg of our journey. Will definitely fly out of this airport again. Can't beat free parking at any airport that has commercial flights. read more

UGH. Love ya, Pellston, but the airport is obscene. I get that you want to be 'safe'. We all do. However, there is no need to rip apart every single suitcase and then haphazardly throw belongings back in. I had securely packed artwork, which security then unpacked and didn't re-pack appropriately. Also, be prepared to pull every single belonging out of your carry on - especially your fudge bc they are OBSESSED with fudge. All this would be bearable if they were kind. Herein lies the bigger issue. There is only one nice person there (sometimes). That's it. Everyone else treats you're going through a prison in-take unit. They have 4 flights that leave a day and they are determined to make it as uncomfortable, intrusive and offensive as possible. I suppose this is one way to keep tourists out of this little gem called Northern Michigan. read more

Beautiful log airport! It has one luggage carousel, 2 gates, easy access surface parking. The airport also has Avis and Hertz car rental on-site as well as a cute littler restaurant with a great menu and full bar upstairs! read more

This is by far one of the smallest airports I've even been in. From the outside and inside it looks more like a lodge with lots of wood and wild animals stuffed as part of the decor. As small as it was, they still had a wheelchair waiting for me. Basically, I used it to rest in while I watched my suitcase come around the only baggage carousel there. There is a sweet restaurant upstairs where we had lunch on the way back and shuttle service to get us directly to the ferry which took us to/from Mackinac Island. Since I had recently broken my foot, they didn't have me put my one shoe in those bins which goes through the x-ray machine. Instead, she gave me a wooden cane while they x-rayed the one I had, then after I sat down, the security person actually helped me take my tennis shoe off and walked it to get it x-ray'd. What wonderful service - I truly never expected that, but was greatly impressed! They are a little gem! read more

You should know that there is no way to get water, or go to the bathroom behind security. The TSA waits until the last minute to open up. . it was awkward frantically reconfiguring after the unusually intrusive screening process because boarding was already in-progress since TSA would rather remain on break for a longer period of time while the large line forms. They opened both of our checked bags and did not carefully repack them . . we had some delicate items in there we had carefully packed in the center of the bag and they just threw it all back together. They also OPENED my melatonin bottle and spilled them all through the bag. It almost seemed intentional. There was no legitimate reason to open our bags and nose through them. Packed in the exact same way, our origin larger airport didn't open either bag. TSA also made us remove snacks from our carry ons even though we were precheck. Absurd! TSA is the reason for a poor experience. Otherwise the location itself is appealing and clean! read more

I'm a bit disappointed on the experience I just recently had with Pellston. I come here to visit my grandparents about once a year so I guess you can say I "frequent" this airport. I alternate coming either the winter or summer since it's usually the time I have time off work and school. Unfortunately they caused me an unlimited amount of stress. This is the closest airport my grandparents are willing to pick me up from so that's why I usually land here. At one point they flew nonstop to Minneapolis which cut off about two hours of my flight time which was great. What happened with that flight? They don't have it anymore, it saves time coming from the west coast instead of having to go through Detroit, which I also frequent. My flight was canceled twice on the day I was supposed to leave, both those flights were the only ones out of there and Delta rebooked me for the next day. I couldn't stay another day. The man at the check in counter sounded so condescending saying that "You should've called us we haven't had a flight come in all week." How was I supposed to know? There's no cell phone service in this part of Michigan and typically all goes well when I fly out here. I had to get out of there so I asked for alternatives and he told me to "hope" that the next flight would show up tomorrow. It's pretty annoying how he didn't even try to accommodate me. I had to deal with the situation myself. Instead my sister and I decided it was useless to fly out of Pellston and decided to get a rental and drive 2 hours to Traverse City. Some of the workers at Pellston were saying is because they're runway is too short to support the CRJ. That to me made no sense because that aircraft lands at smaller airports than Pellston. The really reason is because they made no effort to de-ice the runway. Sault Ste. Marie is much colder and they still had schedule flights occuring. Traverse City does a great job trying to keep the airport running. It's annoying, the man at the check in counter was pretty rude about the situation. Hertz helped us out WAY more than the people at the check in counter, they didn't even try to help us rebook at another airport. Also when I flew down to Detroit, the only cancelled flight was to Pellston. So to me, that's telling me that the workers at Pellston don't care about people being left stranded. Don't come to Pellston during the winter, even the workers will make a snarky comment like "well we don't have this problem in the summer." It's a commercial airport, you should try to keep it running as much as you can. Everyone who works there is having it easy not doing anything because there's no flights coming in. Sad but I think I'll start flying into Traverse City or Sault Ste. Marie and get a rental car and drive to the area. It's less stressful than having workers who won't help and don't care if you're stranded. Don't even try to fly to Alpena, the flight from Detroit to Pellston continues on to Alpena after so you'll definitely get stranded if you're out there in Alpena. read more

Completely tore up my luggage with their luggage checks. All my things were thrown back in.Opened my bag to have my facewash with a hole cut into it and my secured tape off. Facewash EVERYWHERE. I had to clean and wash everything. The ladies through security, one chubby one and one skinny one both with brown hair were comletely and udderly rude and disrespectful. skinny one threw my open purse back at me asking very rudely "is that all " while half of my things in my purse flew out. Every man there and the sweet wavy haired desk lady were very helpfull and nice. I will choose to fly else where due to the disrespect and lack of work ethics from the security girls. I would highly suggest going through and cutting these bad workers. read more

Completely mishandled my media equipment almost breaking it. Very poor with process of putting things back. Would recommend for TSA to do better on educating their employees at this airport. read more

This is one of the most beautiful airports I've seen in my travels. The airport staff and airline staff are friendly and gracious. However the TSA staff and processes belong in some 3rd world country. They are uncaring blunt untrained and arrogant. I have traveled all over the world and I will never use this airport again. They search every bag, event bag. They do it behind the airline counter in plain view. It takes twice the time to go through security than in any other airport. It is indeed sad that such a beautiful airport in such a wonderful state have to put up with this face to visitors. I will return to Michigan but never to Pellston. I hope this reaches the airport authorities and the TSA "shops" this airport to experience what the paying public goes through. read more
