My wife has her private pilots license but after we moved to Michigan she didn't fly for quite a…read morewhile and was no longer current. After a while she decided to work with an instructor at the Oakland County Airport to bring herself current again. They were always looking for places to go to for flight practice and one day they decide Mackinac Island would be a fun experience to have, and I went along as ballast. This was a really cool idea that hadn't really occurred to me before. Driving to Mackinaw City (NOTE to non-locals...Mackinaw is pronounced as it appears like "mac in awe;" Mackinac is pronounced like "mac in awe"...don't ask me why and don't mess this up or you will really appear uninformed!) is about a four hour drive but in a Cessna 172 it was more like two hours. We planned to fly to Mackinac Island, grab a quick lunch, and then fly back home. The flight each way was uneventful and it was fun looking down at the traffic. Upon arrival in Mackinaw airspace she started the landing approach and lined up with the 3,500 ft runway. That's when I thought it looked a lot like I imagine a Navy pilot sees when landing on an aircraft carrier. The runway ended a little short of a drop off and then there was the water! But the landing went perfectly and she taxied over to the parking area and shut down. It helps that this smaller airport is well maintained. We walked over to a nearby restaurant at the Grand Hotel's golf course, had our lunch, and then walked back to the plane. Take off was a little different than landing because after landing we knew there wasn't a lot of room for error because at the end of the runway there was...water! But it went well and we were up and on our way home. Again the aircraft carrier analogy was in my head as we sped down the runway. But, of course, Mackinac Island doesn't pitch and roll with the waves. A total of about five hours and we went directly to the island without the need for a ferry boat. I guess this is how jet-setters (or propeller-setters) live!

This is the only airport on the island and you can catch a glimpse of it from Crack in the Island…read morespot. It cost $12.50 to land an airplane here and $12.50 per night to park an airplane here.

BOTTOM LINE: This place redefines ghetto-chic. Oh, and power outlets FTW!…read more This place is pretty ghetto. And small. While these traits would ordinarily be a turn-off in a romantic partner, they only serve to enhance the charm of this dinky little airport. Wanna rent a car? Just squint at the 8 x 11 paper signs for AVIS or BUDGET. Hungry? Hope you like gumballs. Can't find your gate? Don't worry, there's only two - even the blind have a coin flip's chance of boarding the right plane, but don't worry, there'll never ever be two planes on the tarmac at once. I'm not sure if they have free wi-fi because I didn't get a chance to try it - I was in the airport, through security and on my plane in less than 5 minutes! But best of all though, is that the waiting lounge is littered with power outlets every couple of feet - I wouldn't be surprised if they had more than all of Pearson combined (okay, maybe slight exaggeration ;)).

Omg, this is the smallest airport I have ever been to in my life. There are only 2 gates!!…read more So before clearing security there are vending machines and a café, and washrooms. There are also some rental car kiosks, a machine to pay your parking, check-in counters and the luggage carousel. It used to be that there were no washrooms after you clear security, yeah, for real! (I never saw the airport then, it's what my husband told me). Thankfully, they have done renovations and now there are washrooms after security. They also didn't have any food options after security, but now they have vending machines and are opening a snack bar (it was not yet operational as of August 2016). Kudos to the "airport improvement team." You can walk the entire length of the airport in less than 60 seconds. Staff are nice and the airport is clean. Thank goodness there is free Wi-Fi because otherwise you would be so bored waiting here!

I love this airport!…read more Convenient: APN is closer to me than MBS and way closer than FNT. Cost-effective: Driving to MBS, FNT, or worse yet DTW, takes hours and adds mileage to your vehicle. I justify the additional cost of APN by considering travel time, mileage, and cost to park at MPN or FNT. Using the IRS car mileage reimbursement rate (62.5 cents per mile as of June 9, 2022, but this rate can change several times a year), I multiply this rate and the distance to either MPN or FNT. For MPN, which is 100 miles away from me, the cost of wear and tear on my vehicle is $62.50. Long-term parking at MBS is currently $8 per day. APN currently does not charge for short- and long-term parking. On a perfect day, this trip will take me 2.25 hours to drive. I value my time to be worth more than minimum wage, even today's inflated minimum wage. Together, these costs justify me spending an extra $150 to fly into DTW to catch a connecting flight. Comfortable: The new terminal is bigger and more comfortable than the old Quonset hut they used to use.

However it has one big glaring problem: no rental car counters…read more The airport even has a designated "rental car return" area in the parking lot, but it doesn't have any companies to use it. Definitely an issue for visitors to the area that needs to be resolved.
