Great illusion building to experience with watching people in your group participating. Zip line with the 5 year old loved doing with his Dad. Putt putt coarse that we enjoyed together. So this is my second "mystery spot" and it's pretty close to the same thing as my first. The difference is the price. The mystery spot in Mammoth Cave, Kentucky was $1 for the guided tour. This place set us back over $50 for the four of us. Yikes! As for the experience, they do a good job with it. Out tour was given by a high school kid who did a good job telling the story and letting everyone try the gravity defying tricks. My kids liked it. Is it fun for adults? Well, I enjoyed it but that's mostly because my kids were enjoying it. My favorite part if when feeble minded adults on the tour seem to be questioning gravity and space & time. So maybe if you know that you're not the sharpest knife you should go and prepare to have your mind blown. We did the zipline too because the kids begged us. Not a bad deal but if you're some sort of regular zipliner, it might not be all that thrilling for you. read more

This is more about history and nostalgia, and a fun way to get some special effects photos to show your friends. Decades ago, each photo you took cost money to develop, today, you can take a hundred photos here and it won't cost you anything, and you can see how they turn out right away, you don't have to wait a week or more for them to be developed. This is really not for kids, it was no big deal when I was a kid, because even as a kid I could tell the buildings were all crooked and nothing strange was really happening. And I didn't have a camera as a kid, so pointless. But as an adult, you can appreciate this so much more, you have a digital camera, even can take VIDEOS on your phones now, so you can video some interesting effects IF you hold the camera angle PROPERLY. Too many people are holding the cameras wrong, and you see all their photos of them standing straight and the buildings are sideways and I find it funny how these "adults" taking the photos like to say how they know it is just an optical illusion and they are not fooled, only kids are fooled by this, yet not true since they don't understand how to take the photos properly! You need to hold the camera at an ANGLE so that the buildings are Lined up and look straight through your screen, and then it makes it look like the person is standing crooked. Sad that this has to be explained to adults. Adults who claim this is boring and not a mystery to them. Yet they don't know how to hold the camera to make the illusion WORK on their photos. Not many things are still around that you remember growing up, the fact that this place still is, makes it a historic landmark worth seeing, as it is one of the few things that was around growing up. The schools I went to, the house I grew up in, all that is long gone, but this place is still here. But for how much longer? All the more reason to go now and take as many photos as you can, WHILE you still can. read more

Fun, inviting, quirky - all things that describe the Mystery Spot. We were greeted by multiple employees who talked to us while the other tour made its way through the spot. Everyone was kind and welcoming, asking about our trip and giving tips for our next stop. The tour itself is really neat, though it's a bit short. Multiple rooms and ways to experience the "spot". If the weather was cooperating we would've done the other stuff like zip lines. Gift shop had UP and Mystery Spot stuff available with reasonable prices. Cheesy but fun and my kids love it! We always do the package deal for the kids - ziplining, mini golf and the tour. It's a decent deal and the staff is great. My kids are always amazed by the tour! We are local (Petoskey) but try to stop by at least once a summer. read more

Great for kids but also a blast from the past for adults (any of you went to Irish Hills as a kid)? On this trip, I went with a mix of age ranges and everyone had a big smile as well as a laugh or two. The whole tour lasts about 20 minutes so its on the pricey side for such a short amount of time ($6 for kids 12 and under, $8 for adults). If you are easily nauseated, use a cane or walker, the Mystery Spot could be a bit of a challenge. This is because the house is tilted so trying all the 'tricks' like standing on a wall, getting yourself out of a chair, etc. become more of a full body exertion rather than a common task. If you decide to do zip lining afterwards, make sure you tell them you've been through the tilted house and you'll get $5 off. The gift shop is full of funny trinkets and items that feature the Yooper dialect. All in all, we had fun but once was enough for me! read more

You can do much worse than to hug the Northern Coast of Lake Michigan on a gloriously sunny August afternoon. Three generations of men fishing lazily along, pristine air blowing in through your open window, and views of dancing sailboats and tall pines as far as the eyes can see. Approach I-75 near the end of the Northern Peninsula and the landscape becomes tainted with tourist billboards gaudily announcing your return to civilization. The most intriguing is a black and gold question mark, a siren call of a "Mystery Spot" lying just ahead. The closer you get, the signs multiply, daring you, taunting you, drawing you ever closer: "World's most mysterious spot ahead", "You know you're curious", "Come on, buddy, what else are you doing today?" The most maddening thing, of course, is no hint of just what might lie ahead. The one that finally pushed me over the edge, something like, "Your life will be a meaningless void until you've plumbed the unending depths of this mystery." Well, hope springs eternal, and I pulled off at the turn-off, last stop before the eternal return to the Eisenhower highway system. Then the last sign I would read on the topic: "Mystery Spot closed for renovations, thank you for your understanding." read more

I give this joke of an attraction 4 stars for ONE REASON (and i do mean it when I say this place is a joke, because it really is awful)... -longevity... it's been around forever and it just won't die. People keep getting suckered in and they keep making money there. I even bought a shirt there. It's ridiculous.... Don't Go! Yet, I doubt you will be able to stop yourself. It's impossible, everyone goes... it's basically a law at this point. Give Mystery Spot the lifetime achievement award for terrible tourist traps. Great for elementary aged kids. My 8 yr old loved the Mystery Spot. Yes it's a little pricey, but it's a tourist trap. If you are expecting anything else then you are vacationing in the wrong place. The kids love the story and love trying to figure out the "mystery". Kids 4 and under are free. We also did the maze and putt putt golf. Both very basic, buy again great for younger children. I have wanted to go to this place for years whenever visiting the u.p.. I must say I wasn't missing anything. I knew going in not to expect too much, but this 'landmark' is ridiculous!! 5/16/16 It's pretty expensive for such a short tour but it was fun. The tour guide was great and he was very entertaining. It's a strain on your knees and I got dizzy but my husband and our little boy had a blast. We only did the tour and skipped the maze, zip line, and mini-golf. read more

The Mystery Spot- a place that keeps calling us back. Okay, okay, I'll admit it- I'm a huge sucker for this type of Americana, and really wish there were more of these quirky tourist traps. It's okay to give in, as long as you've got a healthy sense of humor. Having a kid or two in the right age range and of the proper temperament helps make the experience fun. My family's done all the Mystery Spot has to offer- mini golf (uh, not jaw droppingly awesome, but an okay diversion), the maze (fun, especially since we let the kids take turns picking which way we would go next), the zip lines (kids loved these and the staff was superlative, especially when working with our nervous Nelly), and of course the grand dame of the ball- the Mystery Spot tour. Like another reviewer astutely said, "embrace it for what it is." She's spot on. One final word- my family is pretty familiar with most of the multitude of souvenir shops in this area. The Mystery Spot has a sweet spot of reasonable prices and interesting stuff to offer. This was a greats family stop! Perfect for my 13 yo son who was speechless a few times, and the other kids (8,8,6) loved putt putt, the maze and zip lining. We got there early during the week and had private everything. Highly recommend this off the beaten path activity. read more

I can't say I found the Mystery Spot to be all that mysterious. Granted, I read the reviews which prepared me to not be awed, but I really wanted to try zip lining since I've never done it before. One look at the zip line and my enthusiasm waned. I can't attest to the normal length of the zip line experience, but this one seemed really short. I've got to admit, though, that the new place lacks the character of that old building. Fun for the 12 and under crowd. Don't have too high of expectations and just go with the silliness of the tour or you will be disappointed. Little kids love this place. The tour is short and they're always amazed. The zip lines are short and probably not worth the money, but the guides were really nice. I'm sorry but this place is just a waste of your money. It has nothing to do with surveyors and their equipment not functioning properly that discovered this place. Actually if you have a steep hill at your house and some spare lumber you can make your own mystery spot. That how they have done it across the country since the Great Depression. Little kids love it, but anyone with and education level above a fifth grader will just feel dizzy and leave with sore knees.
