It feels odd writing a review for a cemetery, but I have been here a bunch of times, either as the…read moremain part of walking tours or as part of other walks, such as to Prospect Park, or otherwise at various times of the year. Side note, I am pretty sure it's free for solo people, but if you go with a large enough group, they have a $5 fee per person, which is reasonable. In general, I would recommend coming here in the fall, not just because the weather will be nicer, but also because the trees are beautiful, and winter is nice as well, due to the frozen lake, among other things. The spring is nice as well, but there are better places to see leaves in bloom, as there are more wintery shrubs here. The area is massive, and you could honestly spend many hours going to various corners. There are highlights such as a well-known view of the Statue of Liberty, many sculptures, and graves for people ranging from Samuel Morse to Boss Tweed to Leonard Bernstein to Louis Comfort Tiffany to Henry Chadwick, among others, along with many people from various wars, of course, such as the civil war with one particularly interesting grave having a confederate and union soldier next to each other for reasons. The place is particularly well-maintained compared to other cemeteries I have been to, with the entrance being striking among other things.

I walked in slowly not knowing what to expect because who visits a cemetery unless you're visiting the deceased. Well unbeknownst to me this cemetery was also a beautiful garden. I was shocked how well maintained it was kept and how quiet and peaceful the area was as you walked around. I was also surpised to see people just sitting with their dogs or just relaxing on benches. The headstones of some unknown people to me were scattered throughout the cemetery. They did have a pamphlet for you to check it out about the facility. Definitely a cool place to check out when its open.

People are welcome to bring their (leashed) dogs, to feel the all-too-rare grass under their feet. The cemetery was started before germ theory took hold in this country, so all the burial vaults are lined with marble--hence the name. Because most headstones are flush with the ground, there is a peaceful, pastoral feeling. I was last there on an open day, and I saw a few people bring in their dogs; some dogs in the city have never felt grass beneath their feet! Truly great to see the reaction!

It is my first time actually having a Chinatown funeral and going to a cemetery in New York. This cemetery did seem quite peaceful and the burial plot was overlooking the city across the way. I thought it was nice and also that even in the burials there was already a community of people with all their English names with their Chinese names as well. This cemetery is big so there were a lot of plots and many gravestones. We spent quite a while here but time actually felt like it went by so quickly. It is a great resting place.

To my family, what was important was the kindness of the Director and her staff's willingness to guide us through the whole plot purchasing process along with options provided. My mom passed away a few years back (f*ck cancer!) and we were not in the right headspace. We were first timers and really needed guidance and patience. Landscape, Upkeeps, Grounds are all clean. The staff are very nice. It can be quite hectic at times during traditional Chinese cultural visits like during Cheng Ming, which coincides with Easter. The staff keeps it going and are usually helpful. If you have the money, this location is best for any family living in the 5 borough. Otherwise, it's Jersey or Upstate NY. The only 2 issues I have with Cypress Hill is 1) we paid for perpetual care but often we see lots of weeds & trash around my moms' grave. So we end up cleaning it ourselves. 2) WHY is there ONLY 1 bathroom?!? It's horrible and that bathroom is quite gross... so you might want to hold your bladder... Good luck friends.

I normally bring a large jug of water because the water spigot is a bit of a walk from where my grandmother is buried. I'd also imagine that the spigot is shut off during winter to prevent water from freezing and damaging the pipes. Normally I go to Glendale Florist about a few blocks away from the cemetery for a bouquets of flowers and cemetery cones but there are many other similar businesses in the area too. For those who might be wondering why there are large evergreen bushes planted next to graves in the Asian section, it's a symbolic cultural ritual that a number of people cherish. I respect other people's beliefs but my family and I don't participate in this particular activity. I had to ask about the beliefs behind this practice since I was not knowledgeable and also wondering. It was explained to me that these evergreen bushes are connected to the thought of eternalness which is probably why these bushes aren't shaped or pruned either. The sections are well marked. I don't know how much a plot costs because a family member made these arrangements so contact CHC for answers to your questions.

It's well organized; separated into sections, which makes it fairly easy to locate your loved one. There are areas where your loved one can be placed into a wall as opposed to the ground. Not all cemeteries provide this as an option. I can definitely see myself utilizing this cemetery in the future for deceased loved ones. The location is very easy to get to for people who reside in Brooklyn.

I came to Mt. Hebron when I was just starting to visit historic cemeteries decades ago. Founded in…read more1903, it's considered the Jewish section of Cedar Grove Cemetery, but my memory is that Mt Hebron was much larger, much more impressive visually and with a serene, stately aura about it. I came in the days before Find a Grave. I was motivated by an old copy of Life magazine I had bought, from March 1944. They had a photo inside of the burial of labor racketeer Louis "Lepke" Buchalter, who had been executed at Sing Sing. Mourners are clustered about the gravesite, but in the background, I could see the remnants of the 1939 World's Fair. With a friend, I drove and navigated my way through Queens (not my favorite borough), and, arriving at the cemetery and using the magazine as a guide, eventually found Lepke's final resting place. We took our photos and explored the rest of the cemetery. Lepke was a fascinating figure. From a poor but respectable family, Lepke chose crime as his life's profession and, paraphrasing the words of historian Albert Fried, rebelled against authority at the same time he embraced it. He ran the infamous Murder Inc. with Mafia boss Albert Anastasia and was responsible for much savagery and many murders. (An interesting book is "Pacifist" by Donald Wetzel. During World War II, Wetzel was a conscientious objector and for a time was jailed with Lepke in NYC. Although a gentile, Lepke thought Wetzel was a Jew and began to act almost as a surrogate father to him. Often, Lepke castigated him for his pacifism. Wetzel would later write, "Finally, my patience gone, I interrupted, 'What kind of a Jew am I? No, Louis, you know what kind of Jew I am. What kind of a godd**n Jew are you?' He jerked his head back, his eyes brightened with surprise, and then, remarkably, he smiled. Far from outraging him, something about my angry challenge strangely pleased him. That I'd had the guts for it perhaps." When Wetzel is transferred upstate, "I reached for and found Lepke's outstretched hand, seeing, with absolute disbelief, his face contorted like a child's, Lepke crying, his voice a hoarse whisper, his last word to me, 'Shalom.'") In driving around the cemetery, we saw a mausoleum with the name "Streisand" on it. Barbra's relatives? I assume so. Since Find a Grave, I realize that among the honorable citizens buried here are notable actors, musicians, photojournalists, politicians. Also, other notorious criminals I was chagrined to learn I had overlooked. Martin "Bugsy" Goldstein, a Murder Inc. killer also executed at Sing Sing; Emanuel "Mendy" Weiss, a Murder Inc. killer who was part of the death squad that dispatched Dutch Schultz in Newark in 1935 and also died in Sing Sing's electric chair; Irving Wexler aka Waxey Gordon, a Prohibition kingpin; and Abe Landau, a Dutch Schultz bodyguard who was shot down with his boss. To Mt. Hebron's credit, they don't shy away from that unsavory history. If you visit their cutting-edge website, they offer walking tours such as the Murder Inc. mob tour, the Composer's Encore Tour, the Holocaust Memorial Tour, and the Yiddish Walk of Fame Tour. A beautiful cemetery rich in NYC's history and tradition, it comes highly recommended. I just wish Queens was an easier borough to get to and navigate. It has some of the best, most historic and beautiful cemeteries in NY.

It is a difficult cemetery to drive through. ( see my previous review) ( see pix) . There are restrooms near office. If you need to park , go to the parking area on the left. The one on the right could get you towed. There is a yellow painted strip before the restroom. Where you can temporarily park /wait in car. Flowers not often available laced in this cemetery in leu of rocks. Flower vases are regularly taken out due to water collecting and mosquitoes. Red circles on grave stones are for seasonal care. Gold emblems are for Eternal care. Should delay from scheduled funeral service overlap another crew of workers is there for follow up at other location. Crews wait at site according to scheduled hour. Perhaps this is more than you need to know , as the driving directions and office info are the most important to getting to and around the cemetery.
