The best there is, plain and simple. I live in Washington, D.C. now but have also lived in NYC and San Francisco and I truly have yet to find another salon where I can walk in, show them a picture and walk out with my expectations exceeded. I trust the stylists at Peles Salon completely. Every single time I go to Peles Salon, I am reminded of the unparalleled talent and knowledge about hair, the attention and care given to customers and the sexy/chic vibes. My boyfriend also refuses to get his hair cut ANYWHERE else... which I find funny because in my mind, how difficult is it to cut mens hair, right? Until I forced him to get it cut in DC so we don't have to drive to the J (Johnstown)... and then he walks into our place with an absolutely awful haircut and I can understand why he will only go to Peles Salon. There honestly are no words to describe how much I love this place -- I recently wanted to get my hair colored and was exhausted from work so I decided to get my hair done at a top salon IN DC and I lived to regret it. My hair was ORANGE... orange. They completely destroyed my hair. Panicked, I immediately called Peles Salon for the first available appointment and stressed the urgency -- they were so accommodating and let me know everything was going to be OK! Reading this you are probably thinking that there is no way it was as bad as I am making it seem -- rest assured... it was way worse (pictures attached.) When I got to Jesse, he was a dream worker. He was calm and collected and undeniably made me feel comfortable, even though my hair was a total and complete disaster! He took a step back, assessed my hair and came to me with three options to fix my hair. I ultimately told him to use his best judgment because my hair was fried and orange, how could someone fix it? Guys, I kid you not, this man (Jesse) is a miracle worker!! He made my hair look absolutely incredible, as if NOTHING was ever wrong with it (before and after pics attached!) Jesse is the absolute best that there is. I will never go elsewhere because every time I do, I regret it!! I will happily drive 3.5 hours just to go to Peles Salon. Jesse is definitely skilled. He did a beautiful job on my hair. However, he was very aloft and condescending. He made me feel very insignificant. I'm very easy going and rarely complain. I expect to spend a minimum of 2 hours at a Salon. I don't expect to spend 4 hours and over $300 for a color and cut because his attention was focused on his staff and other Clients. I wish I could find a hair stylist with his talent but better social skills!!! read more

My first few (12 or so) visits to Peles was pretty good, Samantha did a great job in changing my initial hair cut style and keeping my gray roots hidden. When entering the salon, greetings vary greatly depending on whom is at the counter. I've spent $200+ several times at the salon for cut, color, highlights. Usually spent $100. for just a cut and root touch ups + a nice tip. Prices always seemed to vary, however, I generally left happy with Samantha doing my hair. My last 2 visits weren't so great, my cut (done by a different stylist other than Samantha) was not correct. I had to ask her to fix it, lost another 2 inches, she straightened it, fighting to get it to lay down. I specifically said don't use the thinning shears, and yet she did, I already wasn't happy. I left it grow out, gray roots and all for almost 3 months before it was long enough again to get it back to the wash and wear style I requested. Not to mention all of the stray hairs sticking out due to the thinning. It had also gotten so dry from fighting it every day with a flat iron to simply make it lay correctly that I knew I'd need a special treatment to help with the dryness. Went back to same stylist (my mistake, but i had a family funeral and couldn't get in with Samantha in time) again left with a cut I wasn't happy with - not what I asked for! Upon washing my hair the next day, i then realized how uneven the cut was. Literally 1in longer in the front on my right side, and chopped up in the middle back. Which explains all the flat ironing she did to me. Still wasn't the cut I asked for. Frustrated! Funeral to attend later in the day and thought I'd call to see if I could get it fixed. So the next day I phoned and the older woman at the front desk answered (for whatever reason she was NEVER, NEVER friendly towards me, besides asking if I had an appointment, she was always cold and unwelcoming upon my arrival. Maybe because I would show up in jeans and I don't wear make up due to a skin disease, I do not know why, but she made me feel unworthy of being in her presence at the salon. Our conversation: Me: "I had my hair cut yesterday and it's a little crooked, when would I be able to stop and have it corrected?" Receptionist: She SIGHED very loudly, then asked: "What exactly is the problem?". Me: "it's crooked, quite a bit longer on the one side and very noticeable now that I washed it and took out the curls." Receptionist: "WELL, who is this & who was your stylist?" Me:..*****..... Receptionist: Hold on, I'll check, SIGHHHH. Comes back and stated my stylist was there and could see me in an hour. ME: Perfect, thanks so much, I'll see you in an hour. I walked in and she didn't even ask my name, she looked at me and said "Oh, you the one who needs her hair fixed"! Did not state my stylist would be right with me, or have a seat, or anything. Went right back to whatever she was doing with the paperwork in front of her. Now mind you I spent, $140 +$15.tip on the cut, root touch up color & treatment to repair dry damage (due to the previous bad cut) the day prior. I hung up my jacket and could see my stylist was finishing up her current client. So I sat down and waited. Needless to say the cut to correct the problems were no better, and I won't return there again. If it wasn't for the arrogance-rudeness I experienced upon entering, I was going to call and ask if Jesse could have seen me to fix me correctly. If I would ever return I'd see Samantha again, but I just can't get past the ignorance and being made to feel I simply wasn't worthy to be there. read more

Rivals any salon I've been in while living in Southern California! You can tell the owner puts his whole heart into the salon and the stylists are on top of their game. DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU'RE A BLONDE! I wanted an icy white balayage, starting as a level 9 blonde. As someone who now does my own blonde hair toning due to this terrible experience & waste of $200 I know they put black dye/or way too dark toner all through my blonde hair that was already damaged. Therefore I had to do a bleach bath when I got home and it got to a caramel blonde(4th pic) /: Years of bleaching it myself with minimal damage GONE! The final result of wasting my money here is unfortunately the 3rd picture where my hair is literally dark dark grey, practically black. Still haven't got a refund from them and it's been MONTHS. I now have bleached it back to the level blonde it was before going to Pele's Salon & had to buy extensions due to the damage that happened from this salon. If you're a blonde do you trust them with your hair they will unapologetically ruin your hair. read more

I have been a Peles regular for a long time. I love the feel of the salon, the Aveda products...but most of all...the way my hair looks and feels. I usually have Jesse cut my hair, but I would feel perfectly fine with any of the others that are there. They explain the products and show how to apply them. If you are ok spending $200 on your hair come here. If you aren't ok with no transparency in pricing and a complete shock as you step up to pay, don't waste your time! I called to make and appointment and they scheduled a consultation before hand. Well, I sat down and told the girl what I was thinking and she immediately went to work mixing product and going to town. Long story short, I paid $40 for a trim (that she didn't even style) $120 for ONE color (my hair is medium-long) and $30 for TONER (which took out most of my lightness). I left bawling! I called later and went in to have it fixed and they played the blame game between the stylist and the front desk and somehow I am the one who left with it being my fault and she wouldn't fix it! I was beyond pissed and will NEVER go back again. And they will never get a good recommendation from me, that's for sure. read more

My review is very late and I apologize it's taken me so long to write my review. I made an appointment the beginning of December for my Mother's funeral. The older lady that answered the phone said they had a cancellation for the morning of the 6th of December on the day of my Mom's funeral. Great! I will take it, never have been there before but I have a great friend who goes there all the time that told me they're the best in town. I have natural curly hair and when my hair dries if it's not pulled back turns into an Afro once the humidity hits it in any warm climate (indoors). The young girl that styled my hair kept telling me that my hair needed trimmed for the dead ends. I told her that I didn't want much taken off that I'm trying to grow it out, I've been growing my hair out for 5 years now since I've finished my last dose of chemo and my hair breaks very easily. She assured me she was just going to cut off the dead ends so when I wore it back in a ponytail it wouldn't look frayed all over my head. Fine no problem as long as it's just a small trim. I was sitting with my back towards the mirror and she began cutting and styling my hair dry, didn't ask me for a shampoo and set. When I looked at my hair when she was done she had it as a comb over bob that made me look like I was a 90 year old woman. I told her I didn't like it if she could restyle it. She told me that would entail washing my hair and starting over and with it being cold outside she wouldn't recommend me having wet hair leaving the salon, which I didn't understand when they have hair dryers?!? Whatever I asked her how much did I owe, $70?! For a style I didn't like so I went home washed my hair and went to pull it in a ponytail for the funeral and she chopped my hair off, it wasn't even long enough to make a ponytail and my hair kept slipping out and wouldn't stay in place. I am so disappointed because she didn't listen to me from the start and if it wasn't for my friend saying they were great stylists and a nice place to go I would if just went to walmart and seen an old friend like I always did. I won't be coming back, I think because I walked in to have my hair done in old clothes because I knew I would have hair on me they treated me as a thug, not the medical doctor that I am. I went to Peles on the recommendation of a friend, who has adorable hair. I had a really great experience at Peles, and left with a great cut. Peles is an Aveda concept salon and uses only Aveda products. That wasn't the draw for me, but after visiting I might be an Aveda convert. The salon is a standalone building in Richland (not a strip mall) and serenely decorated. They offer all types of spa treatments and services. I went for a cut and style. I asked for Jesse Peles, the salon owner. I told him my hair woes and told him that I needed a cut that would lay nicely even when I couldn't style it because I have a newborn. During our consult, he noticed that I kept pushing my hair behind my ears. He talked me out of a shorter cut because he thought I would want the security of longer hair, and I could wear it pulled back. He was right. I love the cut - the layers are great. I get lots of compliments. He showed me how to quickly style it with a paddle and a round brush that I already had at home. I liked Peles for the atmosphere and because the stylist really listened and gave me the cut I needed. I will keep going there and will probably get more treatments - the pedi station looked great. Last night was my first experience with Peles Salon. I can honestly say that I was completely blown away. First off, I called in late and they got me right in. I explained my situation and also how my previous stylist just didn't seem to have a passion for her art. I went in and was seated with Samantha, this young cute trendy little thing took 40 min to understand what I wanted, my overall goals, and she TOOK HER TIME making sure I was happy!!! I am a very harsh critic on the flip side I'm equally complementary!!! I never write reviews but my experience this week was beyond horrible. I had an appointment with Samantha for color and a cut. I brought in multiple photos of similar hair colors (baylage type coloring). The end result was nothing like the photos I brought in. From the color itself to how it was put on was nothing like I expected. I voiced concerns to her prior to leaving but she was unreceptive to what I was saying. I thought that I would go home, see if it grew on me or looked different in different lighting, and go from there. To say it didn't grow on me would be an understatement. I called the salon the next day and requested to come in to see what could be done. The next day I met with Samantha and explained that the color was brassy versus the ashy color I wanted. I also explained that I wanted dark roots with light bottoms and felt like I just got a full head of highlights that were grown out in some places and completely on my roots in other places. She was defensive and unwilling to listen to my concerns. Her solution was to just tone it. I explained that my concerns we're beyond the color and toning it but also with the placement and streaky appearance, she had no solutions. I asked to speak with a manger. A few minutes later the owner came over. To say she was rude and unprofessional would be an understatement. The owner quickly asked me what my concerns were. I showed the owner the pictures that I had originally shown the stylist. The owner looked at me like I had 10 heads and as if the original pictures I showed her resembled what my end product was. The owner quickly asked me what I wanted her to do. I explained that I just wanted it fixed and to look somewhat like the picture. The owner quickly stated that I had signed a piece of paper saying that the color was not guaranteed to be close to the picture. I explained to the owner that that was not what I signed piece of paper for. I explained to the owner that I had been asked to sign a piece paper due to having breakage around the frame on my face. The stylist was concerned that my hair would experience more damage from the bleach and wanted me to sign a piece of paper to acknowledge that I understood that risk. I explained to the owner that I would gladly wait for her to get the form, read it, and see that it stated nothing about the color but only spoke about the breakage. When the owner read the paper, she had nothing to say. I explained to the owner that I came to an Aveda salon due to Aveda being a trusted brand. The owner interrupted me mid-sentence to correct how I said "Aveda". She then stated "well didn't you have a problem with your last hair stylist". A few months prior I had received a hair cut from a stylist and it was a lot shorter than I had requested. I left it at that. I never voiced my concerns, returned to the salon to complain, or demanded my money back. When I called to make this appointment, they were going to make me an appointment with the same stylist. I simply explained that I wanted to try a new stylist due to not being 100% happy with my last hair cut. When the owner made that statement (and implied that I was difficult) I quickly explained to her that I have never caused an issue in her salon, complained, demanded that they fix anything, or demanded my money back. She then stated that they could put a dark glaze on my hair. I voiced my concerns that I would have paid almost $150 to simply have my original hair color back. Her final resolution was to give me a refund. I ended up taking the refund and going to another salon to have it fixed. Not only was the color nothing like the photos that I originally brought in, but the way that the owner handled the situation was extremely unprofessional. My daughter had a very bad experience at some other salon, I have been going to Peles for a few years, I called on a Friday evening, they got her in on the very next Tuesday, my daughter is 20, she had been crying for days, the other salon made her highlights orange, and quite a mess. It was very damaged. Jesse met her in salon and decided he would do her hair because it was so bad. He spent so much time with her even though he was booked that day. He made her feel at ease, he said she will not leave his salon unhappy! Needless to say her hair turned out perfect!! That was the first she smiled since her disaster. Had visited a few times and been very pleased, until my most recent visit. A patch of hair about 2 inches wide and 4 inches long was shaved off the back of my head. Because it was the back of my head, I didn't notice until a few days later, at which point they refused to somehow correct the embarrassing mistake and would not give me my money back. if you are looking for a more modern salon, this is the place. i am orig from jtown but moved away for 8 yrs. when i came back i was in desparate need of a salon to go to here in own. johnstown is full of salons catered to most of the local population (not young people) this is not one of those. while they have older clienele as well, they def know whats up when it comes to trends and keeping up with big city salon standards!!! i was thrilled to see this salon is an aveda salon meaning they only use aveda products. upon arriving for my appt, they gave me a thorough tour and explanation of all their services. then ashley, who was my assigned stylist, patiently listened to what i wanted and looked at all the pictures i had to show her. she did a spectacular job. i was more than pleased! it was exactly what i wanted. the price may be a lil high for a johnstowner, but if you are looking for a quality service salon, and don't mind paying a few dollars more than say, jcpenny salon, then this is it. i am used to paying no less than $100 for a cut and color. i paid $113 plus tip. i was so happy with the overall experience and result that i would have paid more had they charged more lol. you will not be disappointed. i color my hair a lot. in my 28 years of living i have never been more satisfied. when i washed my hair this morning, it was the 1st time ever, i have not had a bunch of color in the bottom of my shower. aveda products are legit, and when they say they are mostly fade-proof...they mean it!!!! i love peles salon!!!!!!!! read more
