The best care possible/ such a wonderful diagnostician! Going to her for years! Knows soo much; excellent knowledge and referrals.

Dr Chen does have a doctorate degree and studied techniques in acupuncture treatments to heal or speed up injury recovery time. I have sports injuries quite often, either from golfing, skiing, or swimming, or gardening... (Boys! You name it.) Her office is where I call first to get treatments most of the times. Not that I can get in fast enough as her schedule is usually booked up and I can't get in 2-3 weeks later from the time I want... So more than 70% of the times I go elsewhere to seek treatments. BUT if I do get in, she usually gives me the best diagnose and treatments that my achy and sore body needs (Nobody does it better!) Sometimes she tells me PT is what I need and refers me to a physical therapist of my choice (closer to my home than her office is). Note that her office offers massage and physical therapy besides the acupuncture treatment. So why 3 stars? Minus one for long wait and weird appt system setup. Don't expect anyone pick up your call when you phone in. You MUST leave a message and they call you back. It's exhausting if they call and you're not avail. The whole vicious cycle starts again... leave message... they call back... Minus another star for the doc attitude. Other reviewers are right on the spot about her cold, unfriendly and lack of communication style. I think it comes from her personality and family/cultural background. It makes patients feel unwelcome and less caring. Sometimes I even wonder if she needs patients now that she has ppl lining up to see her. read more

I can't speak highly enough about this office and how Dr. Chen and her staff (Eiichi and Scott) have helped me with a myriad of needs with my shoulders, neck, hip and knee. I am a woman in my late 50's and have been active my entire life. I seek and appreciate professional help from providers who's goal it is to keep me physically healthy and active. I've seen several sports medicine practitioners over the years, and have a referent for comparison of rehabilitation services. I came to Dr. Chen at the suggestion of a friend because I had been having horrible knee pain upon completing a vigorous 4 month boot camp which involved daily running and a couple previous bad falls that had caught up with me years later. After a pretty thorough conversation about my reason for coming in, the Dr. checked out my range of motion. My limited mobility caused her concern so she did order I get an MRI. To my surprise (shock), I discovered that my femur was completely out of the hip socket. I was experiencing the beginning of what later developed into horribly advanced osteoarthritis. What resonated upon the discovery of the bad hip was her telling me that no matter what rehab or sport I did, the hip would not get any better. .. She did tell me to listen to my body & not to go beyond pain....so unfortunately- I , who had been a 6 day a week dancer & gym rat- now fell into a bit of a depressed state. Living in Santa Cruz- I really cannot imagine why in the world she didn't suggest water aerobics or swimming! More over, being an Acupuncturist - no treatments were actually offered. I ended up seeking out an Ortho for surgery - Oh boy ! Stay tuned for THAT. review! Note to Doc: Water therapy cures ALL! Not to mention anti- inflammatory foods, accupyncture & massage. I had a disappointing experience with Dr. Chen. When I arrived, she never introduced herself or shook my hand. Her examination felt rushed and impersonal. Ultimately, my biggest problem with this experience was that she seemed to have no interest in my personal history/story/desires -- one specific concern that I had was brushed off. When the session was over, she left me standing in the hallway with no "good bye" or "see you next time" or even "thank you". I saw her sit down to a computer in a separate room and asked, "is that it?" to which she replied, "yes." I understand that she's busy, but there is no excuse for letting preoccupations get in the way of making a client feel heard and taken care of, especially in the medical field where people tend to find themselves in vulnerable situations. Maybe this was just an off day -- I know that Scott Taylor is an excellent massage therapist. read more

I had an almost identical experience to Alexis H. I have a relative who only goes to Dr. Chen because the massage therapist is good and her insurance covers it because it is done in a medical office. I was thinking of going back for the same reason. I was recently injured and need some physical therapy and massage. After reading this I am hesitant. read more

I started seeing Dr. Chen and her staff for chronic neck and back pain issues. She put together a comprehensive treatmen plan including medical evaluation (she's an MD) and adjunct therapies that have kept me feeling as well as possible for several years. She is always open to customize your treatment plan using the many modalities available to address whatever needs I have had. Dr. Chen really understands what it is like to live with chronic pain conditions and is expert at medically managing your treatment with caring and kindness. I've been to lots of other doctors, but I've never received this level of care. Highly recommend her and Scott her medical massage therapist. read more

This is an over due review. Mainly because I don't really agree with yelping about doctors. However I feel I need to set the record straight. I've been going to Dr. Chen for 4 years now. She is the only person that is able to get my migraines under control. She is a well educated Doctor she is a Medical Doctor first than she got acupuncturist degree. Both my husband I would love and wish for her to also be our primary Dr. but she doesn't do primary care. She is the main reason why we stayed with Dignity Health. I used to have crippling migraines that would happen multiple times a week if I didn't go to her for treatment. My last major episode was because I went two months without seeing her. My husband had to drive me to see Dr. Peggy. Immediately after getting my acupuncture and trigger point injections the stabbing unbearable pain in my eyes and head decrease to a dull ache in the back of my head. Dr. Peggy was very kind to squeeze me in that day, because if I couldn't get in Er would of been where I'd had to go next. That's how much pain I was in. Which wasn't my first choice. I don't like being medicated. I'd prefer to fix the problem instead of covering it up. That is what Dr. Peggy does for me and she is a God send! I see her monthly and make my appointments with her 1-2 months in advance. read more

After having no luck with a couple of different doctors, a chiropractor, and a couple of massage therapists, I saw Dr. Chen. She easily diagnosed my problem and began treatments that gave me immediate relief from my chronic shoulder pain. I have since seen other acupuncturists because they were more convenient for me, and she is one of the most effective. I found her to be professional, intelligent, and competent. read more

I think very highly of Dr. Chen and her practice. She asked probing questions about my condition and medical history, and was able to come up with the best treatment option. She remembers the goals I have in rehabilitation, and at each visit she assesses how I'm progressing towards my goals. She has been extremely willing to explain why she is doing something or choosing a certain treatment, more so than most physicians. Since she mixes both Western medicine and acupuncture, I especially appreciate her willingness to explain things in detail. Her explanations are clear and easy to follow. I like that she is open to tailoring treatment for the individual patient's needs. I like that she has both physical therapy and massage therapists at her practice, and she works well with her staff. It is nice to have all of this in one location. (and the physical therapist is great, as is the massage therapist I saw). I find her personable and very easy to talk to. She's helped me a lot, and I recommended her to several of my friends. read more

It's not always easy to get an appointment with her because she is great at healing people and is in high demand. Scott Taylor, massage therapist, is also top-notch. I have seen Peggy Chen now for several years. However, recent events particularly the way she conducts herself and communicates with me has caused me to look elsewhere. But the final straw was a misread of my MRI report. She did not compare with the prior year and guessed. Imagine! Guessing for a doctor. She did not say she was guessing but when I went home and reviewed the documents side by side, I saw that she screwed up. This is inexcusable for a doctor getting full payment or under any payment scenario. I am an astute and well-educated person who discerns carefully and asks questions. I have also heard from several people throughout the town as I have lamented Peggy's condescending attitude that they see her as a good doctor but have walked elsewhere because she her communication skills are so badly lacking, anxiety level is elevated ergo healing potential greatly diminished. She lacks compassion, understanding, and the ability to relate. The two women in the front office are not friendly and do not seem to communicate well between one another making it difficult for the patient. Moreover, Scott, the massage therapist is not a person that brings any amount of real caring to the practice. By the time he is finished with updating his notes on computer (back to you) and running out for God know's what, perhaps one gets a 30 minute massage that feels rushed. So, I am looking elsewhere. Maya, however, has managed to keep a wonderful disposition despite the ills of the practice perhaps because Peggy allows her flexibility. I wish Maya would go elsewhere and I would follow. The new location is sterile and much further for me in a difficult area to park. read more
