I love bookstores and can spend endless hours if I could. I read on a recent article that they are known for their huge calendar sale in January, so when I happen to be in the neighborhood and saw this place, I had to grab one. Such a wide selection of calendars that it was so hard for me to decide which one to get. What's a girl to do with multiple calendars?! The calendars were $3.99 each or 3 for $10. The book selection is good..but oh my god. Whenever I go there and ask for help, employees seem to be annoyed or not interested. Now I prefer going to Pegasus books in Berkeley (downtown) or Rockridge instead. They are so much friendlier there, the atmosphere so much nicer! Wonder why? read more

I wish they had an even bigger selection of new graphic novels/comics/fanzines like the downtown Berkeley location, but they're doing alright. Pegasus Books in North Berkeley, Downtown Berkeley and Rockridge is/are the best book store around. I can always find what I am looking for and if they do not have it, they will call their other stores or order it for me. I have never ordered a book from Amazon; I did order Fiesta dinnerware, though. I think that local neighborhood bookstores are so important to the culture of a community. What I might save on-line or at one of the big box stores is miniscule in light of all of the good that local bookstores return to the community. I love being able to find used copies of books in the same store where I buy the latest published--hot off the press--books. The staff is very knowledgeable and very helpful. I like this bookstore and I like the staff--having gotten to know them well enough over the years. Great store in many regards, running a trade that is incredibly challenged by the obvious things like internet, etc., but still--a good place to go. I don't buy as many books there as I once did, not for any reason of selection or quality or staffing, but for the simple reasons that follow: 1) these days, given that the economy pushed me out of my corporate job, I'm earning retail pay and I'm poor as a mouse in a church 2) I tend to buy electronic books from Amazon or iBooks for convenience sake--MY convenience. I realize that I could actually buy electronic editions THROUGH Pegasus, but it's not apparent to me HOW that works, nor is there any PROMOTION that I can see that would allow this, and as the stepping stone to doing this regularly isn't plain to me and I'm a lazy !@#$, the dubious payout of sponsoring whatever commission they might make on sales of electronic books won't happen yet-- 3)I work at another bookstore, so I can get whatever comics, books etc. that I choose whenever I choose...borrow books to read, etc. I can't say that going to another bookstore is like a busman's holiday, but it sorta is. Still, I like the vibe of the place and the browsing occasionally finds a book that I'm willing to purchase. It works like this--I browse the bookstore, spot a title, and see if it's available digitally online. If it is, I'll probably buy it online. Nowadays, with smart phones and tablets, I can do that IN THE STORE which sorta freaks me out...and have the book waiting on my iPad by the time I reach a wifi zone. Sometimes I will spot a book I want to read, something that is older...say a classic sci-fi novel from the 60s...these go for around $6-7 usually online, but I can get a used copy often in Pegasus for half-cover price. This is a strength of the local bookstore. They also have a delightful selection of graphic novels which I enjoy--but then, working in a comic bookstore, for now...this is a lost selling point. Great store--and if someone can 'splain to me loothy' how I can purchase an e-book through them so they make a bit of credit on it, let me know! read more

This quirky neighborhood bookstore almost makes me want to ditch my kindle. Also they welcome doggies with biscuits and ear scratches.

I liked seeing the cat napping on the couches over in their magazine section. I also enjoyed looking at the comic books, I am always looking for a particular one I saw at a library awhile ago. This is a great local neighborhood bookstore! They have a lot of hard to find books. Now with Borders closed, and Barnes & Nobles too commercial, there are not that many bookstores which you can enjoy being there and spending time there. Also I love their annual calendar deals! read more

I have been going to Pegasus books for more than 30 years now and have always enjoyed it. You never know what treasures you will find on the shelves. There are not to many independant book stores around these days so its nice to know we have one of the best locally. read more

Amazing, friendly staff. Always helpful when looking for a book! Tons of used and new books AND they can order books for you if they don't have it in stock. They get them in pretty fast to boot! Way more rewarding than going with Amazon and they can actually give you honest referrals and reviews if you tell them what you are looking for. read more

The group was here for a reading out loud story telling night, which is only suitable for adults due to the content of the material being read. Champange was available that evening, I chose not to have any since I don't drink alcohol. They have a wide variety, and selection of books and calendars to purchase. This is my favorite book store. I work at the elementary school down the block. I walk over on my lunch breaks and I always find so many good books. On top of that every book I buy is under $4. I usually find awesome vintage editions of amazing literature for $2.25... One time the guy at the register marked my book down from $4 to $2 for no reason at all! The employees are down to earth and the atmosphere is really relaxed. Their foreign language section is minimal, but it's no doubt better than Borders or Barnes and Nobles. read more

One of the best independent book stores in the east bay. Wait, are there any other kinds of book stores anymore anyway? There are two Pegasus book stores, but the one on Solano has a better feel, but no book store cat, and some amazing art. The staff picks are pretty great, I probably wouldn't have picked up the Mickey Mouse comic compilation without their divine guidance. read more

Great lil independent bookstore. I would go to the one on Shattuck before and I'd have these great experiences with their sale tables. The same goes for this branch on Solano. I was sooo tempted to buy a giant hardback of Lord of the Rings in Spanish (El Senor de los Anillos) the last time I was there. Not to mention a calendar that was 1.99 called Regal Dogs...trust me...you want this calendar. I might even go back and get it even though I already have a ridiculous calendar. Anyhow, point being, If I ever find myself in a Borders or Barnes & Noble, more and more I like to hold off on my purchase and support a local bookstore. Pegasus & Pendragon is a great one of those independent bookstores and I'd be incredibly sad if it had to start shutting down branches (like the Telegraph Cody's, seeing that as a Halloween Superstore was so depressing). read more

I have been on a quest for the Top Used Bookstore in the Bay for a year.... Last weekend I happened upon Pegasus on Solano, after a leisurely brunch at the Sunnyside Cafe. I popped in to see if I could find any of the books I've been dying to read, not expecting much since all of the used shops in SF have been out of them. I was pleasantly surprised to find that had each of the four fictions I was looking for, and they were each $6 or less. Amazing. Even the best shops in SF tend to average upwards of eight or nine dollars... This jem takes five stars from this bookworm. read more

As previously mentioned by other posters, it's a prime location on an evening out with fellow readers or at least friends who will allow you a good twenty minutes to browse around before or after dinner. Zachary's and Cactus are just a few steps away. On how many afternoons have I opened a new purchase from Pegasus while sitting in Zachary's waiting for a slice--fresh from the oven--to cool? A great many. I've been coming to Pegasus since as far back as I can remember, and it was always the stop before Half Price, which used to be two store fronts down before they closed their Telegraph store and moved down to Shattuck. Pegasus always had better stock. Pegasus continues to be a store that doesn't seem to be thoroughly picked through, and I can count on one hand the number of times I've walked out with nothing. They work hard to stock their shelves and tables. But the pricing of used books seems to be a little off recently. I picked up a mass market title less than a month ago for $2, and saw the same edition, slightly more used, tonight for $10. I also spent $15 at the Pegasus on Shattuck a couple months ago on a first edition hardback that this Pegasus has had priced for $40 in similar condition. I'm glad to have gotten the better deal in both cases, but those are big disparities, and I'm thinking that the new buyer--if there is one--needs to corroborate a bit more with whoever else is pricing the books. I love this place, but as a guy who spends a large percentage of his income on books, it's a little alarming. I'm hoping these are a couple of flukes, and I trust they are. But I'm a little more willing to shop around a little if I have the slightest hint of doubt. read more

OK, it doesn't quite stand up to Moe's or Cody's, but this is a fine store and would be considered a great store anywhere outside the Bay area, which is blessed with a bumper crop of simply awesome book retailers. What's there to not like about this place? They've got two floors, a wide variety of new & used books on virtually every subject, and even have a small CD section. It's also a good starting and/or ending point for a long, leisurely stroll of the Solano strip--always a nice alternative when you get the hankering for a different scene than Telegraph row. This place is great. i walked in here and my girlfriend at the time could not pull me away. the selection is pretty immense and the staff here did not leave me feeling alienated or unwelcome so i'm glad with that service. This location in ok. Some what small. But it has a nice selection of books for it's size. Came here looking for a Tin Tin comic books. I found it. It took a little bit of time looking for it. I would definitely come here again. I wish this location had a bathroom like the downtown Berkeley location has. I love a local bookstore and I have always loved Pegasus but after the last three or four visits, I'm done with them. The selection of books is great but the management has lost their way. The music is too loud as others have mentioned and every time I have visited lately, the workers are huddled at the front register/desk clearly enjoying their very loud, very opinionated, very self-engrossing conversations. They speak really loudly to be heard over the music and when you do want to make a purchase, you get the side glance and nod as if to say, "Just a minute. I've got something to add to my fellow employee conversation." When the employee serves me, he or she will politely say, "Thanks for waiting." Seriously? Did I have a friggin' choice? If it happened once, I'd be quietly moaning but I think it has happened the last three or four times consecutively. There are other great bookstores to visit. Time to spread my wings and discover them. read more

You will certainly find what you are looking for or rather what the universe wants you to look for if you visit their many locations. I have been an avid Pegasus explorer since moving here last August, but it was not until I visited their location on Solano that I was led to purchase more than I intended to search for. The space is held together nicely by the employees, especially Scott, who not only provided a genuine presence, but actively maintained relation after being asked for assistance. Scott introduced me to an author that merely brushed my awareness in the past, but after his suggestion will be someone whom I know I will revisit time and time again. read more

Pegasus on Solano has been one of my go to bookstores for years, dating back to my college days. It's not the biggest bookstore nor do they have the larger selection that a big box bookstore does but I like the overall selection of books they have as well as the atmosphere. I like the neighborhood that they are in with restaurants and other shops that I frequent so I stop by regularly. I find that Pegasus is a nice place to browse for books even if I don't have a specific book in mind. I support independent bookstores and hope that Pegasus is around for many more years. read more

The best browse around. The buyer ( I know the buyer - yeah) travels to New York, London, Boston - he gets around - and he finds these really INTERESTING books to bring in. Their specialized sections like spirituality and science are well thought out and well stocked. I always find much more there than I could ever possibly buy. You can find a nice copy of that classic you've been meaning to read for a good price. The used section is well stocked, the staff is helpful. Their yearly calendar sale is great!! The calendars start off cheap and get cheaper the more you get past the new year. They have a calendar for every interest. Are you a vegan typewriter repairwoman who likes to travel in Finland? They've got your calendar. Big magazine section. All the good literary reviews for the highbrows. And ask for a frequent reader card. After you buy a certain amount of stuff you get free stuff. Absolutey horrendous. The selection is horrible and OVERPRICED (why markup, people?) and the internet is basically non-existent, not to mention the grumpy clerks. Echoing other reviewers (see Eyez V. below), no one is even remotely helpful, and moreover were exceedingly rude. One gentlemen seemed upset that I disturbed his computer playing (minecraft?) to ask a question about their selection. absolutely awful. Shattuck Location: I went into this bookstore the other night to buy two books. One, "Fathers and Sons" by Ivan Turgenev, was easy to find. The saleswoman helped me find the other in less than two seconds. I love this store. read more
