When my kids were young, they played in the little Playhouse. My granddaughter found her own spot.

A neighborhood treasure. I don't have much of a book budget these days, but I try to support this very special store as much as I can.

I used to live near here and this Bookstore has been here a long time!! It seems like you never get to spend as much time in a bookstore like this as you want to, you want to make sure you don't miss anything. Besides books, they also sell greeting cards, games, puzzles, and records. This place has been here so long, the old wooden floors 'creak' when you walk on them. Lots of old books to choose from here, which is the appeal to me. Located on Grand Avenue in Oakland, a very popular bookstore!!

I stumbled upon Walden Pond after snagging coffee nearby. It's a curious and unsuspecting store from afar with a TON of great reads. They have everything from volumes of comics, to coffee table reads, and likely genres you've never heard of. I had probably 10 books in my hand and had to settle for two. The staff is really helpful and the place is very organized and well kept. It's a super chill vibe just walking around. I'll likely visit regularly because there's just so much to parse through and explore. I'd recommend if you're bored and need some low cost fun to spend the weekend afternoon Loved it

Incredible selection and such a beautiful bookstore. You can spend hours at Walden's searching. I always end up getting so many more books than I intended. I love that they also have used books so you can spend less than other bookstores.

Stopped in here while in town to help my daughter move for college, and I had a few hours to kill. I was happy they open at 10AM, since most other record shops in thr area didn't open until noon. I really didn't expect much from their vinyl selection given the smaller size of the shop and since they appeared to focus more on books than records. But I was super impressed by their great selection, from classic rock, to indie, to electronic, to blues, and jazz. They had new, sealed vinyl as well as some preowned options. I came away buying WAY more than I had expected, as I found a few hard to find titles from my wishlist, several of which were marked down, so the pricing on many were less than I've seen at other shops. I liked that their staff provided some of their recommendations on the shrinkwrap, many of which showed good taste in my opinion. Although it's a lot smaller than the bigger Bay Area record shops, they've got some great options! Plus, they had a ton of book options throughout the store. The staff was also very pleasant. If you're shopping during the week, make sure to pay for parking at the kiosks to avoid the ridiculous parking fines they give out! (I got one for $72 a block away!)

When I entered the space, I was excited to try something new- but it started when I went to order tea- I know now that the guy at the bar was the owner- I asked what kind of teas they had and he seemed annoyed at my question- like I was wasting his time. I had to ask again but then asked my partner who is white to deal with the rest of the ordering. We are a queer couple and both felt the vibes were hella off. Lots of white men in the space at that time. I also remember they didn't used to have any books by people of color. They had a "world" section of books though (lol) and throughout the rest of the place, a bunch of stuff written by white men. I feel like the stuff they have up now is a performative attempt to not appear what they actually are. I have not gone back since and don't recommend it

But many of these books are very reasonably priced, like $7.50-$25! Almost all of the stock is older, even obscure books. But it's a book lover's treasure hunt. I picked up a really interesting book about San Francisco's history from 1948 for only $10! Definitely recommend this place and it's a very quick walk from the Broadway BART station. The only thing I'd "change" is recommending that the owner put more of their stock on ThriftBooks.com to enhance their profits. But that would be at the peril of Bay Area bookworms! :)

(Luckily they hadn't run the charge through on my credit card yet). Every couple of months or so I'd follow-up--sometimes they'd respond, sometimes they wouldn't. Still couldn't find the book, and kept asking me to be patient. I was patient for a long time. Now it's July 2025, about 3 weeks shy of ONE YEAR since I ordered the book. Wrote to them again, no response. But they still have it listed for sale on their website, so I took a shot and ordered it again. Then they wrote me a snotty note and told me to quit ordering it, they haven't found it yet. I wrote back and asked how they can possibly still be looking for a book after one year? Then they wrote back and said they were canceling my order! Very crappy customer service. Zero stars.
