I often went to the Fox Theatre but somehow always missed the bookstore across the street! So often older books (those published 20+ years ago) are often super pricey. But many of these books are very reasonably priced, like $7.50-$25! Almost all of the stock is older, even obscure books. But it's a book lover's treasure hunt. I picked up a really interesting book about San Francisco's history from 1948 for only $10! Definitely recommend this place and it's a very quick walk from the Broadway BART station. The only thing I'd "change" is recommending that the owner put more of their stock on ThriftBooks.com to enhance their profits. But that would be at the peril of Bay Area bookworms! :) read more

Bibliomania - Niche genres at Bibliomania! - Bookstores Near Me - Oakland, California

I ordered a book from them in Aug 2024. It never arrived, and after multiple attempts at contacting them, they finally said they had moved and couldn't find the book at the moment. (Luckily they hadn't run the charge through on my credit card yet). Every couple of months or so I'd follow-up--sometimes they'd respond, sometimes they wouldn't. Still couldn't find the book, and kept asking me to be patient. I was patient for a long time. Now it's July 2025, about 3 weeks shy of ONE YEAR since I ordered the book. Wrote to them again, no response. But they still have it listed for sale on their website, so I took a shot and ordered it again. Then they wrote me a snotty note and told me to quit ordering it, they haven't found it yet. I wrote back and asked how they can possibly still be looking for a book after one year? Then they wrote back and said they were canceling my order! Very crappy customer service. Zero stars. read more

Review #1000 and figured I'd save it for one that would be unique, and unique is the best way you can describe Bibliomania, for better or worse. For starters, I had been living in Oakland for well over a year before I even realized Bibliomania existed. And I'm on Telegraph all the time. Its across from the Fox, not far from Itani Ramen and Diving Dog when that was a thing. I love book stores, and knew about Wolfman's and Octopus Literary Saloon (sadly both of which are closed) so a bookstore nearby, you'd think I would be all over it. And as for classic bookstores, this is it. That musty old book smell. Uneven aisles covered with well organized books. It's a place where if you walk in, you will absolutely find a book you want. I've picked up gifts for friends here - one is a huge WWII/Cold War buff, and the selection here is great. For myself, I found this fantastic book on the Weird Tales magazine, as well as one about medieval swords and knives. So for selection and organization, and classic bookstore vibe, 5 stars. But as you'll read in all the reviews here and elsewhere, the owners are just nasty people. And look, I can get that there is the trope of the gruff bookstore owner, and that this is Uptown Oakland; they have absolutely had some terrible individuals come into their store, that is a given. But they treat EVERYONE like they would prefer not to have your business. On the lighter sides I've been asked to leave my heavy backpack at the front desk; on darker sides the attitude has absolutely been "Why are you even here?" On my last trip, in Covid, wearing a mask and trying to be polite, the owner just wanted me to grab books and leave, not even talk to them. Their vibe is 1 star. Will I continue to support an Uptown establishment that is a bookstore with some great finds? Absolutely. Will I enjoy it more once I have left the establishment with my find and have forgotten the miserable service? Also absolutely. read more

Don't have a bookstore on the corner of a busy downtown urban avenue if you can't handle people touching books. There are a ton of rare and first edition books, and I get the archivist frets, but then put this bookstore in an alley and make it by appointment only. Book prices are high but probably fair, due to the first edition, book collector nature of the store. I love musty bookshops, where gruff and eccentric owners grunt rather than making sunny small talk. The owner of this one has an aggressive helicopter style that is off putting. Let's just say after writing this, I am going to research "how to remove books from shelves " because I've obviously been doing it wrong for 40+ years. With this said, with the awareness of the unpleasant interactions, it would be a fun challenge to visit the store and try to not get snipped at or to have a competition of who will get scolded first. read more

I ordered a book online and subsequently had my order cancelled by Bibliomania, with the reason given that the US Postal Service did not at that time accept shipments to Australia. I was told to try again should the situation change. I left it a number of weeks and then enquired again, providing a link to the USPS website which showed not only that they did ship to Australia, but that they had also done so at the time my order was placed. I received no reply to my query, or to another made subsequently. I would have appreciated an honest response concerning the reason for not selling me the book. There is a copius amount of material. It's all EXTREMELY well organized. I assume the older gentleman who works there is the owner stared at me any time he could see me from his desk. I looked at some art handout/pamphlets that were close to the front and he stared at me with some sort of evil look like he despised me. As soon as I put the pamphlet down, he stormed over "You kids don't know how to put anything back the way you found it!" he screamed. I told him " you are very rude and I'm never coming back in here." They were scattered amongst a taller table with no organization, surprisingly. read more

They did not answer my email and they will not answer their phone. The books I ordered are still listed for sale on their website. This bookstore reminds me of our basement back in New Jersey. You see, my mom has always had a deep and passionate love of books. Always. So much so - that we literally had a huge basement lined with shelves of books. All kinds of books as well. Most of them were older/second hand books - so smelled musty and familiar. LIke Bibliomania. We had spiritual books. We had old British kids books. We had War history books.We had travel books. We had Theology books. We had the classics. We had it all. Back when I used to live about that book filled basement, I'd throw on my fuzzy slippers late at night and tip-toe into the basement and would explore all of the random titles. I'd sit on the ice-cold concrete floor and just read. Bibliomania has every sort of obscure second-hand book you could imagine. The prices are pretty reasonable as well, considering the age of much of the literature there. Unfortunately if you're looking for recent travel books etc (as I was when I first entered) - you won't find much. They primarily focus on older used books - but with such an eclectic and diverse supply of literature - I quickly forgot what I had originally popped in here for. I ended up buying some strange "Connect with Your Body Again" book, which delves into ways you can become closer with your spiritual and physical self and some amazing random book about San Francisco Madams back in the day (this will def be a interesting read). If you're on your way to Somar for an early drink or are in the area to watch a show at Fox Theater...or are just hanging around - take some quality time to browse in here. You'll be glad you did. read more

Pro: This is a huge pro. This is probably the most versatile, unique, fun collection of books that I have ever had the privilege of viewing. They have rare books, out of print books, books for specific interests and collectors, beautiful editions of classics, and the list goes on and on. It's like hunting for treasure every time you go in. I just moved and I am going to miss it. I found a beautiful edition of The Satyricon for my personal collection, and a pristine, perfectly aged 1930s area book for a cigar enthusiast friend that even had an embossed pipe on the cover. Just a beautiful selection and something for everyone can be found here. It's across the street from the fabulous Fox Theatre as well, which makes a great view from the windows, and makes the store easy to find. Bonus: I didn't pay an arm and leg for the books mentioned, but I should have. Reasonable prices, even on the first editions. Con: The owners are not the most pleasant people. I came in here a lot and it was always like they couldn't be bothered to give me the time of day. They'll have you leave your things by the door (which is standard I guess), and they'll poke about and monitor your viewing of books. They're abrupt and unfriendly during transactions, which sucks because I love their treasures. I suppose if I had so much good stuff in one place, I would also guard it skeptically. *shrug* read more

Bibliomania is a wonderful bookstore & the friendly couple who run it will help you find what section of books you want to browse based on your interest. Bibliomania specializes in out of print & rare books including signed editions as well as first print copies. The selection here is quite impressive. I personally loved the books in the Eastern Religion section & was able to find a rare first print book printed in South Africa in the mid 1990s by a small letter press. With a little patience, some browsing, & luck along with the helpful guidance of the owners you will likely find a gem here as well to take home. Happy searching! read more

I've been here twice -- and left within moments of arriving both times. The first time I walked in with a sealed bottle of water. The woman working told me to leave it on the counter. I told her I had no intention of opening it, and she raised her voice to say "YOU CAN LEAVE IT ON THE COUNTER!" My mother doesn't even talk to me like that, so I left. The second time, I walked in and asked the employee on shift (a man this time) where the children's section was. He mumbled something from behind his computer screen. I asked if he could repeat himself, to which he said, "THIRD AISLE FROM THE LEFT ...ONE - TWO - THREE!" I told him I didn't appreciate his tone. He said, " I can't figure out for the life of me why people don't know what third from the left means." I said the issue was that I didn't hear him, not that I'm an idiot. I took a few steps toward the children's section, but decided there was no way I was giving him my money, so I left. Real shame. I was excited to buy my son some books and support a local business. I have patronized this small, independent bookstore for years, and have spent literally hundreds of dollars there. So it came as a bit of a surprise when I went in with my partner a few weeks ago, and the woman owner addressed us as if we were brand new clients... but whatever. We were the only customers in the place on a busy Saturday afternoon in Downtown Oakland. Unfortunately, my partner accidentally dropped a book when removing it from the shelf, due to a poorly attached dust jacket. He checked the volume, saw no damage, then replaced it on the shelf after looking through it. As he was perusing a second volume, the woman came up and informed him that he should lay that (spiral-bound) book flat, so as to not damage the spine. Then, she added aggresively, "dropping books doesn't help either." I nervously laughed, sensing her irritation, and she mocked me by giggling back absurdly, followed by a harsh glare. Although I had chosen three books to purchase, totaling around $70, her behavior seemed uncalled for and I decided to pass on purchasing anything from them. Upon retrieving our checked bags, the woman told my partner that she "only hoped the book he had dropped TWICE" (he only dropped it once!) was not damaged. He apologized again and politely told her he had examined it and thought it had survived, but he would be happy for her to evaluate it also. She seemed uninterested in actually inspecting the book, but instead she seized the opportunity to chastise him yet again for dropping it, which seemed to give her a good deal of pleasure. I regret ever having patronized such a pathetic establishment. read more

I was walking past this place with my five year old son when he stopped and gasped. "This bookstore is AMAZING! It's JUST like a dream I had! It's magic!" So of course we had to go inside. Let me preface this by saying that my kid is incredibly well-behaved. He can also read. I'm a writer. We spend a lot of time around books. So I have no problem taking him in bookstores, ever. Except today. We walked in, through stacks of books on display - he touched nothing. Not one thing. He was a bit intimidated, so I had to encourage him to walk in further. But then his excitement overwhelmed him and he darted ahead and around the end of the aisle. Not a bit deal, he knows to stay near me. I had just located the science fiction section when I was suddenly accosted by the elderly woman who appears to own this place. She got in between my son and myself and said, "Oh, NO. NO. He MUST stay with you. He MUST stay with you." I said, "Okay. Stay with me buddy, okay?" My son nodded. He was no more than ten feet away from me, and I could see him. He then committed what is apparently an unpardonable sin. He reached down and touched a book-end. It was a granite book end with a sphere. He put his hand on the sphere. He did not pick it up. He did not move it. He simply touched it. I should note that at this point neither of us had touched a single book. This woman just lost it. She got in my face and said, "NO. NO. HE MUST NOT TOUCH ANYTHING. HE MUST NOT TOUCH THE BOOKS." I immediately reached around her, grabbed my son's hand, and announced loudly, "Sorry, buddy, we have to go. They don't want us in here." My son, stricken, said, "Mommy, why not?" I said, "They don't like kids." And then on the way home, I had to have a long conversation with my son about discrimination. The older lady working there yelled at my friend who was taking a photo of his gf while in the store. "You REALLY should ask first. You REALLY SHOULD." Even after apologizing she repeated the above a few more times. Looking around the store, gotta say they ain't got anything to be worried about. Nobody's going to be stealing any store layout ideas from you, jerk. Totally uncalled for, so I felt moved to write this review while in the store. I'm told she was giving me the stink eye for being on my phone, but after looking around at their inventory, I know I've seen better used book collections at the swap meet. And I love books. Maybe she was paranoid because they were having a sale on books about narcotic and psychedelic plants, and she had just partaken. Seems like they had almost no books by writers of color, very strange for a downtown Oakland business. This isn't Walnut Creek. Overall, I'm surprised they're still in business. My first time to Oakland. I was visiting the Fox Theater. I was eyeing this place across the way for a while, and I saw the older gentleman flip the open sign later on that day. A few hours later and after my disappointing ramen visit; I came in. Mainly wanting to find books on flavor (herbs, seasonings, etc). I asked for the cookbook section. An older woman helped me find it, and gave me the rundown: American cooking, international and wines with foods. Extremely helpful! I looked around for about an hour and found 3 wonderful books for great prices. She informed me they have a website and even more books online! It's a beautiful bookstore, and all of the books I checked out were in top condition. I wish I lived closer because I adore book shopping. I will definitely check out the online selection. She was so nice and lit up once she started talking about books. It's hard to find passion in people now it seems, but she definitely has it! read more

I'm upfront about far preferring a messy bookstore to a well-organized one. Airy open spaces and clean displays turn me off. And if you sell new books, fuggedaboudit. That puts me in a certain class of bookstore purveyor, so if you like your bookstores with a magazine rack, summer reading picks and a Starbucks in a corner, then you can go ahead and skip this review. However, if you're like me, Bibliomania is amazing. This is exactly the bookstore I always want to wander into. It's a labyrinthine mess of oddly-categorized tomes, just filled floor to ceiling. There's a good collection of antiquarian and first-editions--and for once, most aren't kept behind glass. I tend to judge a good used bookstore by its poetry collection, and while Bibliomania doesn't have the best, it's still more substantial than you'll find in most places--which, even if you're not a poetry reader, is usually indicative of a certain kind of bookstore curator. I always like having a pop-in bookstore near a usual walking route (despite protests from my bank account), so I'm quite glad to have wandered across this new addition to my repertoire. (EDIT: Reading over some of the other reviews, it sounds like there's a woman proprietor who's rather unpleasant--when I was in, a man was working behind the counter: he wasn't a bother when I was browsing, and we had a pleasant conversation about the old poetry journal I was buying, even knocking a bit off the price because it had suffered some shelf wear. If you are IN LOVE with books and really care where they go after their previous owners let them go, then you should go to Bibliomania. Bibliomania is a little used bookstore that sells not just any second-hand books but OLD, hard-to-find out of print books. The store itself is old and cozy but very organized. The shiny pine bookshelves that go all the way up the ceilings are neatly packed with hard-bound , cloth-covered books. Like an old romantic, I love the feel and smell of old books; and imagine the era when they were printed and the lives of the people who read them. I was so delighted to find books here that I used to read as a child: "Enid Blyton" and "Bobsey Twins." They sell books on medicine, politics, illustrated literatures, etc. I was only inside the store for 16 minutes since I only stopped there on a whim while I was running errands. Those 16 minutes transformed me back into the innocent times when I was 9 years old cozily cooped up in my room during one of those vicious storms where schools in Manila were suspended -- taking Bobsey Twins detective adventures to heart--stuffing my face with Oreos, Pringles and ChipsAhoy. Some books were pretty expensive but I left the store with 3 hardbound Cooking Light (1988, 1990 and 91) recipe books. My total? $3.29! The woman was kind and helpful. Told me to take my time and enjoy the store. I will definitely be back and stay longer this time. ****************** WHY 5 STARS? Because independently owned bookstores like this are hard to come by and becoming more rare. Borders and Barnes & Noble are cool but they lack the romanticism that you can only find at a little old bookstore like Bibliomania. read more

I went with my son and sister to find a book for my son. The owner told me she sells children's books but that my son was not allowed to touch any books. So I held my son in one arm. My sister handed me a paperback child's book, I held it in my other hand and started reading it. The woman ran over to me yelling "It takes two hands to read a book! You are bending the pages!" Needless to say I left the store, I have read many books...often with one hand. I do have a child, but I am an adult and I know how to handle a book. Treated me like a criminal. I stopped in after a work function--I'm a book lover and was excited to see this shop on my way to the train station. Was happily browsing for 15 minutes or so when the lady working there said "Honey, we need to put your stuff up here," asking me to give my backpack to them. "Honey," the $1700 laptop in this bag is worth more than anything in your store. You just lost a local customer. Maybe don't assume everyone under 30 is trying to rob you, just an idea. read more

I absolutely love it here. The owners are a bit crotchety, but only in the requisite "we're old and we own a used bookstore" kind of way. I've never had an experience where they've been rude or unfair to anyone who's come in. (I sometimes get the feeling that Bay Area people expect to be rewarded with rainbows and sunshine just for existing, but that's a whole 'nother review....) Be advised that this is NOT a run-of-the-mill used shop where you can expect to pick up some James Joyce for $2 and some Michael Chabon for $8. These are mostly scarce or rare titles, a lot of them first editions, and a lot of them mylar protected. This is a shop for people who collect books as well as read them. If you can't understand why anyone would spend $20 on a 50-year-old book then this just isn't your scene. read more

I can completely see the couple that owns it being crotchety if you disturb them, but my experiences they have been nothing but pleasant, and their selection is phenomenal. I have lovely memories of walking from my friend's tiny apartment to this rare bookstore on weekend mornings. I suspect that the reason for the 3.5 stars for this book shop comes from their very odd curation of books, but it's probably one of my top three favorites bookstores in oakland. I've bought books by Kierkegaard, screenplays from Bergman, and great (and cheap) art books from here. I love that they don't allow the use of technology indoors, as bookstores are meant for intense concentration on the written word... I usually spend an hour here, going through the immense collections. read more

Pros: This bookstore is a very charming used book store with every category of books you can think of with lots of interesting titles! The old lady who was working there was really sweet and helpful! There are categories that are so specific like "airplanes" and "sewing" which was pretty fun to just browse around. Most of the books are pretty ancient so this is a treasure cove for those who collect 1st edition books and other classics. Cons: For the millions of books they seem to have, there just weren't that many of the ones I would be interested in seeing. The prices seem fair but not the biggest bargain kind of place either. Also their hours are pretty difficult to visit them if you work on the weekdays. Overall: Definitely worth browsing if you enjoy classics and old books! read more

After walking me to the section I was looking for, she brought me a foot ladder so I could look at all of the books on the shelf, top to bottom. A funky little used bookstore in downtown on Telegraph. This place is a gem, you never really know what you're going to find in here. It's packed to the rafters with books and you always see the staff sorting new arrivals. Things move kind of slow sometimes in here but come in and look around, you should find something. Note, you get he feeling that most of the books are really old, even for a second-hand store (if you want more current used books, see "Half Priced Books"). What a wonderful selection of books. I found more books than I could carry. There were more that I wanted but I was taking the BART and didn't have my backpack. So, yeah, it's in Downtown Oakland, but the 19th St BART is right around the corner. Plus, you can run across 19th and check the latest course offerings at Oaksterdam U. Literally books from floor to ceiling, divided by subject and then alphabetized. So, if you're looking for books on France during WWII, you'll find it in the Europe section along with every other European country from the beginning of time until now. Not my favorite way to categorize, but considering how many books this place has, the fact that these are organized in any way is a plus. The prices were high, but the selection was outstanding. There's a section for 1st editions and there were more 1st's sprinkled in amongst the other books. This is not your normal selection of used books--there wasn't a shelf or three with every Stephen King, but a selection of rare or just good books. So the owner chased away the local school kids from outside the door while I was there. Totally reminded me of being about 14 and some old bag didn't want me scaring away her customers. However, she was so totally nice to me and helped me find exactly what I was looking for. I love this place and will go back. One other thing, bring your own bag. I was struggling with my books in a rapidly ripping paper sack while riding the BART and then a bus home. Suck. read more

If I could give it a 0 I would. The woman who works there told my daughter she couldn't read a book and of course my daughter was hurt and walked away. She's 5. The woman proceeded to yell at her. I told her not to yell at my daughter. And she kept on saying that my daughter wouldn't listen to her. I've never met a woman so mean to kids and potential customers. It had been a while so I went back. The stock: Absolutely incredible. I am at least in part a history person, and I can say with absolute certainty that if you are interested in one of the areas in which the store specializes, not only will you find something, but you'll pay less for it than you would a lesser copy at another book store. To wit, a couple of years ago I bought a book, Stalin: court of the red tsar, at a nearby used book store. The book in question was in paperback and had a used price of $13. It's now tattered, so I opted for the "replace with sturdier copy" maneuver at Biblomania. The one I purchased is a hardback with the dust jacket intact. Really, it's in great condition. How much did the Van Fleets demand I pay for this treasure? $25? $50? $75? No, no, and no. I paid $10 (plus tax). In fact, I walked out with an armload of books, all in hard back, all high end material, for less than $60. One simply can't do that anywhere else. The Van Fleets: Like I said in my earlier review, "gruff" is about as bad as it gets with them ... unless you do something rude. Keep in mind that this is not a Barnes & Noble; the sort of obnoxious, asinine behavior to which most have been forced to accept in the public sphere and in bookstores that also sell coffee won't be tolerated here, and there's an expectation everyone comport themselves in a way that's appropriate to the setting. My advice: finishing your drink and turn off your phone before you enter the store. Screaming, horseplay, eating, and general monkeyshines are strictly and rightly prohibited. When Mrs Van Fleet greets you and asks if you need help, thank her politely and move along. It's just not that hard, and it's worth the minimal effort. "Use the stool to reach the top shelves": In addition to the usual greeting and offer for help, I was also advised to use one of the stools should I want to look at something on one of the higher shelves. "You shouldn't try to lift something that's higher than your shoulders," was the reason given. Unusual? Yes. Eccentric? Yup. Intrusive? A bit. A little weird? Oui. Still, I thanked her, and went about my business. When I wanted to look at something higher than my shoulders, I looked around before grabbing it stoolessly. It's like the tag line from Alien: In the back of the store, no one can see you reach for the top shelf. 5 stars. read more

When I went into the store to inquire about using it as a location Jane the face of the store greeted me with a "Hello" and "Can I point you towards anything?" She was very welcoming and accommodating. We were able to secure the bookstore as a location and Jane let us film with ease and it was a wonderful experience. I would also recommend this place if you just wanted to find some great books and meet wonderful people who have a love of books. I will definitely be returning here. read more
