What a perfect venue for a street fair: the bohemian enclave that is Kensington Market, hosts Pedestrian Sundays on the last Sundays of the month from May to October. The streets are blocked off, street performers dot the landscape and there are tons of little eateries and eclectic shops to explore.
I was fortunate to catch THE last one in October. People and their pets came out in costumes and even the entertainers came all dressed up. A perfect excuse to finally visit some of the eateries that I have been dying to try.
TASTING MENU:
Little Pebbles - Kinako (roasted sweet soy flour) latte with a Strawberry Daifuku Mochi.
Moo Frites - Kimchi fries with a side of Joppie (pronounce as yaw-pee), Andalouse and Parmesan Pepper sauces. I dug to the bottom of the Kimchi fries to get some plain fries to dip in the sauces, and yes, I cleansed my palate with water before tasting each sauce.
Pancho's Bakery - churro filled with caramel and another filled with condensed milk.
Ko'ox Hana - Mayan street taco with shredded pork, pickled onions and their HOT sauce.
Otto's Berlin Doner - Halloumi (semi-hard, unripened, brined cheese made from a mixture of goat's and sheep's milk) Sticks which are deep fried and served with their home made garlic aioli.
Wanda's Pie in the Sky - monkey bread, Eggs Wanda (croissant with a filling of mushrooms, spinach, bechamel sauce topped with a poached egg and cheese) and a complimentary mulled apple cider.
Needless to say I was happily stuffed with deliciousness by the end of my food crawl (nod to Jennifer P and Aron G). I capped off my tour by aquiring an impromptu poem created by a corner street prose master, who feverishly pounded out the poetic words onto a slip of paper using her vintage typewriter; and a detailed lesson from the Paleo Potter (Eileen Tucker Shuchat) on how to use all my senses to fully appreciate a warm cup of coffee. read more
