It seems to be maintained by volunteers only, so some of the paths are a little overgrown (watch out for thorn bushes), but we still had so much fun and it's honestly just very cool to walk through this old zoo from the 1920s - 1930s! While you're on your way out here, make sure to read the history of why the zoo closed down (mystery!) and take a picture of the map at the entrance to help you on your mission to find the various animal medallions. I hope you have better luck than we did, but maybe we'll be able to come back and find more! There are bathrooms, a playground, and a decent amount of parking. You can also get a nice view of the dam and the lake while you're here, just make sure not to cross the boundary into private property, according to some tips I read online they're kind of sensitive about it but we didn't experience any issues on our visit!

The only drawback is I had to rent a campsite for the day in order to get a fire blazing. Kind of sucked since I wasn't planning on spending the night. Oh well! It was all still worth it as I supported nature and TPWD. The hiking trails were challenging and invigorating. Thankfully they were also very clearly marked. They were a challenge with all the natural rock and rock cliffs. Penitentiary Hollow was the main attraction of the hike. Wow, Lake Mineral Wells rocks with awesomeness! Please camp here!

The scenery was beautiful the attractions were great I loved everything. My dog was happy. I only wished I had used my off I had brought but forgot in the car. I went on the butterfly trail and the connection trail and part of the Jim Bowie trail. The bird blind and windmill were awesome. FYI if needed there is a restroom in the butterfly garden. The garden had so many flowers when I was there and the Bowie trail had lots of prairie view scenes as well as flowers and cedar bushes. I recommend highly. There are a lot of covered picnic tables. Entry is free but they have a spot for donations at the start of the trail by the " human sundial " attraction.

This would also be a cool charity event. There is lots of bottles and various other trash at the waters edge that could be picked up in an afternoon with a few dedicated folks. It is a multi-use sidewalk, so you do have to watch for bikes, and hope they are watching for you. It's not very long "hike", but does make for a nice walk. Especially if you just had a big meal on the square. This walking and bike trail is no different because you can easily take a stroll and see the lake or turn this into a very serious exercise trail to burn up the miles both on foot or bike. They have in-window AC and heating units (which came in handy for the cold snap we received this weekend), a bathroom that included showers, toilets, mirror, and sinks for you to get ready in the morning, and bunk beds with mattresses that actually were quite comfortable. Overall, the cabin facilities were good. We also used a couple of the classrooms that were a bit more run-down that I would have preferred and the in-window heating seemed to be a hit or a miss. The tables could use a refresher and the windows could use an update. The restroom facilities that we used while outside of the cabin were less than stellar. It was neat that there was a washer/dryer on site in the restroom, but the bathroom doors were falling off the hinges and the toilets flushed when they felt like it. The bathroom could use a refresher alongside the classrooms. The grounds were lovely. There were several picnic table areas for us to hang out under trees and enjoy the great outdoors. Overall, I really enjoyed my time here and the facilities were quite well done... They could use a refresher in some of the common areas.

River Ranch County Park in Liberty Hill is an absolute hidden gem. The park runs along the San Gabriel River, adding to its natural beauty with some stunning views. There's a great playground for kids, well-maintained trails, and plenty of open space to explore. One really helpful feature: restrooms are located along some of the hiking trails, which makes longer visits much more convenient. It feels quiet and tucked away, but still easy to access--perfect for a quick escape into nature without leaving town.
