The studio is clean, modern, and has that motivating energy the moment you walk in. Instructors pay close attention to form, which makes the workout feel both challenging and safe. Another bonus is the community and events that get put on for members. These events have been so fun and a great place to make friends! Thank you core collective! Corrections are gentle and rarely framed like you're doing that wrong unless you're about to hurt yourself. All ages and body types are represented here in a welcoming supportive environment. I truly appreciate the variety offered as every class is very different from the last. There are 5 reformers in the small room and one is extra tall and wide. Springwall units in the big room offer a lower entry price than reformer. There's a combo tower-reformer out in the big room used for privates too. Starting with some private sessions will help instructors learn how to tailor to your unique needs as you enter the group classes. They also check for injuries and ask for requests at the start of class. Anytime I join a studio where they don't check on injuries first, I'm unlikely to return, tbh. Begin instructors also have excellent habits of checking for consent on any touches. When a class is a bit smaller, it feels like they are tailored to focus on strengthening each students' particular weaknesses. Exactly what I'm looking for in my core workouts! I haven't worked with every instructor there yet, but each has a unique style. As I continue my practice there, I'm also happily becoming part of a friendly community, my secondary goal!

Before I had signed up, I spoke with Jessica directly about enrolling in only mat classes, and that I have a need for physical therapy recovery due to an accident. I explained more than once before signing up that I wanted to do only mat classes and not reformer classes because I want to practice at home where I don't have a reformer. At first Jessica tried selling me on private sessions saying "she didn't get anything out of Pilates until she had done private sessions", and also recommended a couple of her coaches for group mat classes. I paid $100 for five group classes to try out the school since there's no other intro options. Later I discovered the limited availability of her mat classes, literally just three classes scheduled per week during work hours and all back to back (so no mat classes for 4-days straight). One week her instructor was not available, so over 3-weeks I was only able to attend 2 mat classes. Jessica tried again and again to upsell me on her reformer classes "only $10 more than the mat class" even though I was explicitly repeating myself that I was only interested in mat classes. I asked for a refund on the unused funds for three classes that I haven't taken because I haven't been benefiting from the classes, said I'd be willing to work with refund minus processing fees etc. Jessica stopped responding altogether, I'm not expecting she's going to refund me either. If you're considering classes here I'd say consider the head instructor Jessica puts money before students benefiting from her classes.

Fast forward 2 years. I have no balance, I have height issues, I am scared silly of falling again. I entered Urban Pilates scared to death and certain I would not be a good fit. But I KNEW I needed to get my balance back. I have been doing personal sessions and after only 4 classes, I can feel my confidence (and my balance!) coming back. I am very thankful that I discovered Urban Pilates and I cannot recommend them enough, especially if you have any health issues that you think might hamper your ability to do this form of exercise. I got the grand luck to get Renata as my instructor and she is WONDERFUL (so encouraging) but I hear the other instructors and they seem very positive too. This was just what I needed!

YoY is a community of Yogis, not a business, per se. So, they offer the most genuine practices,…read moreoften blending the physical with the spiritual and mental. Whether it is just an energizing afternoon of Vinyasa Power Flow, or an evening of stretching and meditation with Recovery Yoga, or even a mind-opening experience in Cannabis Yoga... every class is taught with such intent, with caring for the individual and their bodies' needs and limitations, and so much love. Let me tell you a story... Years ago, I was struggling with my transition and many experiences had me sinking under the weight of feeling hated, disdained, or looked down upon by others. This had fed into the feelings of self-hatred that plague so many of us trans folk and I was so suicidal that I had a plan and a place all picked out. One night, I was so distressed, so panicked by the weight of pain that I was walking toward that place, ready at least to test my plan... or more..., when I noticed Yoga on Yamhill on my right. So many friends had suggested the place and how wonderful it was. I felt a sudden and strong urge to check it out. It was coming up on 9pm and... there was a Restorative Yin/Nidra class just about to begin. So, I turned in and ended up doing my very first yoga class ever. When it was all done, I felt as if the weight of the world was lifted off me, I could breathe again... I felt wonderful! Since then, I've attended so many classes here, mainly Yin and other stretching and gravity-focussed classes. I tried Hatha, and that was a great workout for me. I tried Vinyasa and OH MY GAWD that completely kicked my butt. I have gotten to know all the yogis here. Most of them are women and classes are mainly made up of women, making this a very welcoming and kind space, a wonderful place for those of us who do not "conform." There are guys teaching, mainly David Miller right now, who does Yin, Restorative, Cannabis Yoga, and events that blend Reiki, Massage, other healing arts, and yoga. This is a place to heal and grow, not just an exercise studio by another name. Please, if you need more than just a workout, come on in. The studio lost a lot of classes during CoViD, but it's recovering, new teachers are arriving and the schedule is filling out again. Take a look, at yogaonyamhill.com.

She also has a knack for delivering instruction that seems to apply to everyone in the class but is really directed straight at you and your weakness du jour--laziness, fear, distraction, whatever.
