They were friendly. My grandma looked like she had been bathed and hair brushed. When I would talk to my grandma with questions about things they would come over on their own an answer my question. I didn't even have to ask. They adhered to her diet restrictions. I only had one complaint and they addressed it before I was even able to complain and it didn't happen again. They had private showers in their room. The bathroom was kept clean. She had her own room. All the other patients were lovely. ( Except for a grumpy guy but that's not their fault )If we are in this situation again I would definitely choose to send her here vs Waconda care. Hope this helps.

I am a volunteer who has been visiting several residents of Crystal Pines for years. I visit 1-2…read moretimes each week, and over the years, I have noticed how dedicated and caring the staff is of each and every resident. I have noticed the aides and nurses having a good rapport with their patients. I have noticed that all the rooms I visit are clean. I love how the bird feeders outside some of the residents' windows are filled with feed to the delight of the watching residents (as well as the birds!) There are all kinds of activities, parties, and games and outside entertainment planned for the residents--something for everyone. The staff makes sure every resident who wants to participate is included. The Crystal Pines staff, from this volunteer's eyes, is a caring, incredibly dedicated group of people. Their hearts are in their jobs and their love for the residents, who they see as family, is crystal clear.

When a patient…read moreis admitted for the second time in a week with severe pain from a kidney infection (pylonephritis) that isn't responding to antibiotics, and even the ER physicians recognize the severe pain and give adequate pain relief, you don't have attendings who ignore imperical evidence of appropriate treatment for the patient's pain. You don't have attendings who don't understand the difference between a lower urinary tract infection and a kidney infection. You don't treat a patient with severe upper abdominal pain and a history of not just organ-involved lupus, but lupus nephritis, and that pain feels like you're being stabbed with a sword repeatedly with pyridium, especially when that patient was already taking pyridium at home and pyridium is known to only help with pain when urinating, which isn't even the pain I'm concerned with. Dr. Gong is the only doctor who has ever treated me compassionately and saw me as a whole patient and considered all of my health issues (which is quite complicated) when deciding on a course of action. He also considered the fact I have a gene defect where I metabolize pain medicine too rapidly. He has always given me adequate pain control, never treated me as a drug seeking patient, and I've never left his care needing to go home on the stronger meds he provided. He provided what was needed to keep me comfortable and recover. Currently, Dr. Chan is assigned to my case. He's never treated me with dignity or considered my whole picture or the fact that I have a high tolerance to meds due to meds I'm already on. He doesn't ever give it frequently enough (for instance last time he treated me he gave a med that metabolizes out of the body within two hours and only allowed it every six hours). It's like a sick joke. Your body is constantly on a roller coaster of mild pain relief to then pain that gets out of control and goes unchecked for hours and then it's harder to get back under control. I don't feel I'm treated with care or dignity. I am in so much pain it hurts when I breathe. And now I'm not even getting any pain relief. Your nurses and techs are pretty top notch with a few rare exceptions.

I called NIRC on a Sunday morning just before we were driving our family member to the hospital for detox. A kind gentleman named Dominic answered the phone and gave us a plan for the immediate future. This was not the only facility we called but it was the only one that stayed in touch as we negotiated the hospital stay and where to go from there. Three weeks later our family member was released with a firm plan for sobriety and tools to use for attaining that goal as he moves back to Chicago. Those of you who have been through situations like this know it is difficult ... to have him safe and HEARD during his stay gave us all time to recover and plan for the future. Doctor told me he didn't have time for an adjustment but I watched him chase his barefoot toddler around and take his dog for a walk. An assistant told me he was "practically a neurologist" but was clueless as to the actual nerve disorder that I was telling him about which was treated by an ACTUAL neurologist. Save your time and energy and do not go here. Doctor's wife who also practices I believe was the only person who acknowledged my pain and didn't treat me like an idiot trying to pull a veil over my eyes and have me sign up for long term terrible treatment by incompetent fake professionals.
