Come here if you're short of time [or if you just efficiency] and you need to buy lots of things in one place - shampoo, face wipes, nail polish, hair accessories for the kids, the latest cleaning products, hair dye, christmas trees, pet toys, socks, birthday cards, candles, and cushions [and lots, lots more]. I always come here at Christmas to buy a nicknack or two as their prices are really affordable and I can always find something different. I also come here for bedding as it is much more affordable than department stores [it's not the best quality, but it's nice to buy a whole new bedding set on a whim without having to save for a few months]. There is adequate parking in the are and it is easily accessible by bus [the bus stops right outside the shopping centre]. There's a Costa just outside the doors for anyone who has been on a shopping frenzy [or for the partners who want to wait outside!]. Although I don't use it more than a few times a year these days, it's comforting to know it's there in case I need an emergency birthday present, cushion, or notebook.

The Martlets shopping centre caused a bit of a storm when it was being built. People in Burgess…read moreHill tend o get excited about when the town gets something new (see my review of Burgess Hill McDonald's!). Sadly, it kind of fell flat on it's face. As a shopping centre, it ticks all the right boxes. 2 floors, an airy polished granite floor, lots of plate glass and units for shops. This is the first problem. For a number of years many of the units were not filled. It gave the whole place a negative feeling like anything still trading could shut up anytime soon. It's not quite so bad these days and the addition of Wilkinson's, Waitrose and a Costa coffee lend some authenticity to the centre. There is also a food court where you will find butcher's, cheese men and grocers selling their wares. I think that this was a good idea for the centre and encouraged business into it without expensive unit rental overheads. The local radio station Bright.fm also broadcast from the centre and they play their show within. This is actually better than being assaulted by dreary elevator music that you usually get in this type of place. I still wouldn't get too excited about the Martlet's, but it has come on a bit and offers a fairly respectable range of shopping options.

It is located fairly close to Apple, up to a steep gradient in the mall floor. The store isn't as modern as one would expect from an anchor store of a mall, but still pretty much does the job when it is open with a satisfactory selection. The store like most branches of Debenhams is pricier than the overall feel of the store implies on the first impression. Average, generic Debenhams store with poor opening times (unstructured, closing early on most days but this is the same as the entire mall) - A useful brand for the city but not really a great store within that brand. 2*

Debenhams is like a time capsule…read more Every time I offer to take my mum shopping and we've done every other store in the city from M&S to Wallis, she swears she just wants to 'Pop in Debenhams for 5 minutes.' And of course, we always emerge weighed down by bags one or two hours later. This particular branch is tiny compared to the Manchester and London stores but they still manage to squeeze a lot of stock in. The ground floor is mainly occupied by accessories, shoes, perfume and make-up counters from Clarins to Benefit whilst the first floor has a strong selection of bed, bath, kitchen and dining room goodies. There's also a small childrens-wear department. The reason my mum loves this store however, is for the womens wear in the basement. There's air conditioning, three changing room areas and small subsidiaries of Wallis, Red Herring, Jane Norman, Warehouse, Top Shop, Oasis, Coast and Red Herring amongst others. Theres hardly anything interesting in there to see, seeing as the larger department stores like Debenhams and BHS is in close reach. Beales has really outdated itself making itsself a failure. There product range is poor, the items are pricey, the customer service is very poor and all seem to be stuck up attitude. The interior design is extremely poor and lighting is bad. If this store doesn't improve, it will definitely go down hill.

Having experienced some near horrendous customer service from other home stores over the last year (cough Ikea cough shameonyou). I have to say how pleasantly surprised I was by John Lewis' fantastic response to my broken television catastrophe (I was right in the middle of a modern family box set marathon, catastrophe is an understatement). I did not have the receipt and had lost all faith in the decency of human beings when I took my tv to the Tunbridge Wells store I had purchased it from less than two months before. I explained that the tv had already been taken away to be 'fixed' and returned to me still broken by Sony's repair team (cough Sony shameonyou). They said they would try to find the item number for me on their system even though I didn't have the receipt and gave me a voucher for a free tea and cake to use whilst I waited in their in store cafe. Note my pleasant surprise that since my last review they also now provide soya milk. After I enjoyed my tea I went back over to the customer service desk where they informed me that from the item number they could see that the tv was only received by them in store two months ago and so it could not be more than two months since I purchased it and that they would send it away to be fixed, in the interim providing me with a free replacement tv. A week later I returned to collect my now fixed tv and was a very happy bunny. An important lesson many other big chain stores would do well to remember, never underestimate the power of good customer service.

Alas that became a victim of the redevelopment of that part of Brighton so if you're looking for a department store in Sussex then you can't do much better than head to Tunbridge Wells and visit Hoopers. It has everything you would expect in a department store including a well stocked Kitchen and glass department and a fine soft-furnishings department. The hooper's cafe is a good place to go for tea, coffee and a range of cakes or for lunch with sandwiches, jacket potatoes as well as a range of hot meals, all at reasonable prices. It is also fully licensed. It also has a great men's department, although this is outside the main building to the left in a little arcade, and the prices there seem a little higher than in the main store.

Sells clothing by makes such as FCUK, Elle, etc. It also has a…read morelarge range of Homeware like plates, cutlery and that sort of thing, a large range of fragrances and perfumes, bed linen, toys, and lingerie. It is a very spacious store with the main walkways being very wide and large enough for trolleys passing as one entrance to the store is straight from the Sainsburys next door. There is a restaurant upstairs which has a good selection of snacks at a fair price, and also a small beauty parlour next to it.

Although the prices are a little on the high side they only sell quality so its probably worth it. At Christmas its always worth a visit as its is always beautifully decorated. A classy shop for classy shoppers!
