We had someone in our party of 19 with a nut allergy, luckily he spotted the chef using the same knife and did not have any meat, he didn't want to be a nuisance and complain. The parsnips looked lovely and golden ..... but tasted of nothing much, the mushrooms were the same. The food although looking mouthwatering was quite bland. I personally would not return there as you can get much better food and cheaper prices at other eating establishments. But for those of you thinking of going to the Rancliffe Arms who have a 'Nut Allergy', please think twice before going.

This comes as a surprise because I think the place has plenty going for it. Easy parking behind the pub for starters saves you looking for a spot on the busy road and then the interior is well maintained and quite quaint with its fairy lights and beams in the ceiling. The lady who tended to serve us was always very welcoming and friendly so certainly no problems there. The prices are also very reasonable and I do recall being good one lunch time and so only ordering a pint of squash and a glass of water for someone, the round came to 20p!!! I felt guilty to be honest paying so little. They also serve food in there and although it is very bar snackish it definitely does the job and is again very well priced. There used to be a 'Buy One Get One Free' deal, where if two adults bought a meal you would only pay for the most expensive one; however this seems to have ended now but the meals are still very reasonable (£5.99 for a full roast dinner, for example). There is an everlasting '2 for £10' deal on certain meals, so it's worth having a good look at the menu when you're there. The pub itself is nicely decorated throughout in traditional wood, with open fireplaces (although i've yet to see anyone light a fire in them). The furniture could perhaps do with updating here and there, particularly the food section, but for the most part it's all comfortable and sturdy. The toilets are well cared for and clean. The food itself is delicious, and very reasonably priced for what you get. Each meal fills the plate, and I will warn you - don't order 'The Ultimate Sundae' unless you hav hollow legs or LOTS of space after your main meal. It's HUGE! We do often have to wait around 20 - 30 minutes for a Sunday meal as the restaurant can get quite busy, but we never feel the wait with a drink in our hands. The staff are polite and efficient, and they know their products well. I've not had any beer from the bar here as I'm a whiskey drinker but from all accounts it's quite nice. Elsewhere there is ample parking, outdoor seating overlooking the marina and a whole building dedicated to a children's adventure play area, connected to the main building through a covered corridor. This pub does do events (Christmas and New Year dinners, Halloween events, parties etc), which you can enquire about inside. All in all a great pub :)

We ended up here after failing to find a pub down by the canal that wasn't playing rubbish music…read more And I am so glad we did. The music was so much better here. As was the beer, the food and the staff. An old building from 1240 no less, Ye Olde indeed. Proper historic stuff in fairness. Inside there is the main bar area, but then off to the right there are a few smaller areas that are more intimate. I ended up getting a bottle of Bulmers with ice (crushed ice that made for a lovely cider slushy), but they also had a few real ales on tap that would have done lovely also. One that stuck in my mind was the Nottingham Brewery EPA, which I had tried the day before from a bottle and liked. Good to see it on tap. For food I went with the Lasagne with salad and chips, which was really good. Proper lovely pub grub. The staff all appeared to be rockers, which was fortunate for them because some great rock tunes were coming out of the speakers through out the pub ;) When back in Notts, I will go out of my way to get back to Ye Olde Salutation Inn.
