I spent my entire childhood watching my grandmother, mother, father, and uncle sew. They sewed everything from clothes, to curtains/drapes, and even kites (yes, my father and uncle made custom kites for years). I tried my hand at their machines several times, but was quickly overwhelmed and frustrated...mostly by the darn bobbin process! LOL Instead, I learned how to hand-sew. It's been a useful skill, but I was finally ready to make the leap. Thanks for my husband for buying me a machine for Christmas and then Jen @ Thimble Bee's starting up a beginner class in early January, I am well on my way and have my first series of classes under my belt...and an adorable pillow for my granddaughter as a result. Jen is incredibly knowledgeable and SO SO SO patient! The studio is awesome, roomy, well-equipped, and welcoming. I felt at home there from the first night. I can't wait for Beginner 2 classes to begin next month. Jen also offered classes for kids and teens. The teen class was on the same night as the adult beginner classes and they were finishing as we were coming in. The energy in the room was great and you could tell they were loving it. Their projects are so cute (pillows, bags, etc) as samples are on display in the studio. I can't wait for my granddaughter to be old enough to take classes. Oh - and as an added bonus....it turned out that the machine my husband gifted me for Christmas is the exact model Jen uses in the studio. It has made for a great transition from class to home.

The event was help at Hoppin which is also a cool spot; the setup was beautiful, all different variety of flowers, I believe like 7 or 8 different variations plus some greenery. We started off with a Bingo type ice breaker so us ladies could get to know each other. We vibed out to good music and you could purchase a drink if you like(which of course I did!!!) By the time our bouquets were done, we were like old friends. Everyone's floral arrangement was unique and so pretty. Keyona & Simone are great hosts; they were fun and very knowledgeable. They navigated the room of about 20 ladies perfectly. Gleam is a perfect girls night out or just come solo because believe me you will meet a new face and connect over your love of flowers. I did!!! Dan Starks is certified to teach the North Carolina concealed carry class and I attended his class…read morelast summer, which was held in the back room of the Hyatt Guns shop off Wilkinson Blvd. Mr. Starks has been teaching self defense for over 20 years and it shows in his knowledge of the techniques of self-defense. Our class did cover the required curriculum but it was also educational in the reasons why NOT to shoot and how to carry defensively. A lot of technical information was covered during our eight hours, including the required practical shooting at the range (Mecklenburg Wildlife Club, not terribly far away). Dan's class is well organized and had plenty of interaction from the other students. Lots of "what if?" questions were answered in detail. For the class I took at Hyatt, there is a brief break for lunch. Try the Burger King across the street. You'll get a coupon for a discount on purchases at Hyatt. There is also a discount on the danstarks.com website for the class.

We left Cadence three weeks ago after our daughter attended full-time for 13 months and our son…read morepart-time for one month. I want to be clear that we had many wonderful teachers during our time there. Unfortunately, the issues with administration, staffing, communication, and consistency ultimately made us uncomfortable continuing to send our children there. Over the course of the year, there were four directors and multiple assistant changes. Our daughter had six different teachers and assistants. Children were also frequently moved between classrooms due to staffing issues, making consistency nearly impossible. Communication from administration was consistently poor. We were not informed when both of our children's teachers left on the same day, and we frequently received little or no advance notice about staffing-related classroom closures. Families were repeatedly asked to keep their children home because of staffing shortages, sometimes with notice as late as 9:30 p.m. One evening, we were not informed that our daughter's classroom would be closed until after 6:00 p.m. We are still waiting for our refund for this day despite multiple phone calls. On one occasion, administration sent a message stating that drop-off was being closed because there were not enough parent volunteers. Rather than taking responsibility for the staffing shortage that led to the closure, the communication placed the blame on families for not volunteering. Regardless of the circumstances, we found that approach concerning and reflective of the larger lack of accountability we experienced. Communication regarding illness was another major concern. We became aware that staff had been informed of both a case of croup and a case of strep in our daughter's classroom, but those exposures were never communicated to us. Classes were also routinely combined at the end of the day because of staffing shortages, including after illness exposures, resulting in children from different classrooms being grouped together exposing more children. Our experience with our son also raised serious concerns about basic attention to detail. Within his eight days attending cadence, his bathing suit was sent home with another child and took approximately three weeks and repeated follow-ups to get back. His labeled bottle was sent home with the wrong child, and a different bottle was left in his cubby. Most concerning, his feeding plan was lost. For approximately two weeks, he was not being fed according to his plan because there was no consistent person in his classroom after his teacher left. For a childcare facility, I consider losing a child's feeding instructions and not following them for two weeks to be an extremely serious issue. I understand that staffing challenges happen, and I do not expect perfection. I do expect transparency, consistency, and confidence that the people caring for my children know their individual needs. Unfortunately, we did not have that confidence at Cadence. I would not recommend Cadence to families looking for a safe, consistent, attentive, and well-managed childcare environment. We ultimately decided that the lack of stability, communication, and accountability was not worth continuing.
