Re:  RESIDENTIAL ELECTRONICS RECYCLING PROGRAM…read more Wow!  I sure was happy to notice this program in a Google search!  Needing to recycle two old TVs and a fax machine, I was thrilled to find a place where I could recycle for free that was near my home. I found out that besides the City of Chicago permanent facility at 1150 North Branch Street, which is open every Tuesday,  Thursday and the 1st Saturday of the month, there are six other Streets and Sanitation locations that accept certain electronics once a month from April to December.  This location at 52nd Street and Oakley, is open on the  third Wednesday of the month  from 9 am to 1 pm.   Unlike the North Branch facility,  which accepts a larger variety of items, only certain electronics are accepted here:  computers,  computer monitors,  TVs,  scanners, printers, fax machines,  keyboards and mice, VCRs, DVD players/recorders,  video game consoles, portable digital  music players, digital  converter boxes, cable and satellite receivers, and small-scale servers.  Dropping off the old electronics was very easy.  A truck was located on 52nd Street near the entrance to the parking lot.  The guys working on the truck were very nice and helped transfer the items to the truck. It is so nice to get these items out of my house and recycled responsibly for free! It is best to get there as early as possible because once the truck is full, that's it for the month at this location.  Re:  Streets and San service from this location  I have been satisfied with my garbage pick-up.  Any time that I have called this office, I have encountered helpful people.  Sonia Campbell has been especially helpful in the past.  Date of this review is April 19, 2023.  Probably best to double check the information in the future to make sure that the recycling program is still in effect and that dates and time have not changed. Happy Earth Day on April 22nd!

(closer to 43rd St : ) PARKING Some parking can be found in the back of the building. You enter the lot from 43rd Street. There is a walk way between the parking lot and the front of the building. Street parking is in the area--meters on Archer Avenue. Bike rack is in front of the library. THE BUILDING Though not as large as some libraries, Brighton Park Library is a very decent size. I think it has a very nice layout. The front desk for check-in/out is one of the first things you will see upon entering. There is a nice children's section to the left and the adult section is to the right. The Community Room is toward the back of the library - -kind of behind the front desk a bit. There are two gender neutral restrooms. There is a hallway to the left of the Community Room and the restrooms are on the left side of the hallway. You will need a key for the restrooms. The keys are in a basket on the left counter side of the front desk. SERVICE I have stopped in this library a few times in the past year. I have not needed any help nor checked any books in/out, but the staff always seems friendly and willing to assist. The library always looks well - kept and nicely maintained. Extras : You can borrow a Wi-Fi Hotspot at this location As of this review, a CyberNavigator technology tutor is available to assist with computer/tech needs/questions. Call to check for availability and make an appointment. Check the website for various events like Story Time for small children ; crafts for older children; film screenings for adults--and more! Although I feel the parking situation is not the most convenient, I really like the Brighton Park Library. It is a pleasant library that has quite a bit to offer. I'm on a quest to visit every branch of the Chicago Public Library system…read more This is the very first branch of the library I ever visited back when I was...well, I must have been 3 or younger. This branch has some of the most friendly staff people! Ask them a question and they'll help you find the answer, and they're quick so you don't have to wait too long in line. The meeting room in this library is pretty big, and the children's section is spacious. The chairs that have legs shaped like pencils!!! The computers here are usually busy, so book ahead of time if you need to use the internet. It can get a bit noisy, especially during after-school hours.

A great place for military vets and their families to grab drinks and hang out. Beer & liquor. No wine. No food. But you can order for delivery. Darts, poker, watch the Bears and White Sox (no Cubs) on big screen TVs, air-conditioning, and a jute box with great power rock songs. The bartender Billy is always fun. He's good for jokes, can connect you to anyone in the Post, and makes a good environment. Heads-up: It's membership only!!! For membership details: Contact the American Legion at http://www.legion.org/. The American Legion are chartered by the United States Congress for military Veterans that have seen particular service. The American Legion was created by the grandson of President Theodore Roosevelt & General Black Jack Pershing, chartered by Congress in 1919, to bring together veteran groups left after the Civil War. The respective Union and Confederate veteran organizations were brought together as the American Legion as a step towards healing sectional differences and politics that were still held by war veterans and their families.

The Post was named in honor of two Lithuanian-American Pilots, Steponas "Stephen" Darius and Stasys "Stanley" Girenas, whose ill-fated flight in the early days of Transatlantic aviation, garnered considerable attention for its contribution to the history of aviation as well as for its tragic ending. On July 15, 1933, the pair left New York and flew non-stop across the Atlantic Ocean, covering a distance of 3,984 miles (6,411 kilometers) in their single-engine, modified Pacemaker plane Lituanica (Latin for Lithuania). The duration of their flight, a total of 37 hours and 11 minutes (107.1 mph) ranked fourth in the aviation record books of the day; the distance travelled was second to record holders Russel Boardman and John Polando. The flight is regarded as one of the most precise in air navigation history, a remarkable feat considering Lituanica lacked sophisticated navigation equipment and encountered severe weather en route. Lituanica entered the record books for carrying the first Transatlantic airmail delivery, a bag of letters postmarked for Lithuania from the Brooklyn Post Office. The flyers were believed to be shot down by German Nazi artillery, who said the flyers had engine problems and crashed.Despite having enough fuel to complete the journey and the proven skill of the pilots, Lituanica crashed in a forest near the town of Soldin, northeast of Berlin, just 650 km short of Kaunas, Lithuania, its final destination. (The crash site was located in pre-WWII Germany, but the area is considered part of present-day Poland.) An investigation by the Lithuanian government attributed the crash to adverse weather conditions and pilot and/or instrument error. Rumors that the plane had been shot down, on suspicion of being a spy plane or for flying too close to a German concentration camp, were never substantiated. An autopsy completed in Lithuania revealed no evidence that the pilots had sustained bullet wounds. Whether or not the plane had been fired upon could never be ascertained because not all pieces of the aircraft were returned to the Lithuanian government. The Lithuanian-bound mail, nevertheless, was recovered and ultimately delivered. The two heroes are buried in the Aukštieji Stančiai military cemetery in Kaunas, Lithuania. The wreckage of Lituanica is on display at Kaunas's Vytautas the Great War Museum. The post was a Chicago landmark with an actual World War II artillery piece next to the flag pole in the front yard of the Post grounds. The membership was further bolstered by the huge number of returning World War II veterans, replacing the World War I Veterans who had gone to heaven, and the Post was for many years the largest American Legion Posts in the State of Illinois and one of the largest American Legion posts in the USA. This post had a very proud heritage with a stellar Landmark facility on Western Avenue, which was used as a site for a Hollywood movie. The brick and flagstone- front facility had banquet rooms and a huge lower level facility, called the Rathskellar with another banquet room, a kitchen, a huge bar and offices.
