To get there, just take the 102 N to exit 3B - take a right on Smith Rd and drive to the end and there is a parking area.

Biking into the common a couple of days ago, and up the relatively steep hillside brought me back to memories of Italy, traversing lofty hill sides in the Riviera. The plant life is so lush and perfumy, with birds chirping and bees buzzing, that I couldn't believe such a treasure exists that I'd scarcely been to in this city that I know so well. The park was quiet, with the odd pedestrian walking through, so Andrew and I sat on a bench and marveled at the magnificent view of the harbour and downtown Halifax. The sky was rich azure, the wind balmy and the company perfect. We sat for about an hour and chatted, while we enjoyed the gorgeous scenery, accompanied by a sweet little gazebo. I implore you to go and picnic in this wonderful Dartmouth park! It's about 300 acres of hillside, open to the public since the 1700s. Go enjoy Dartmouth's flourishing downtown scene, and walk through this lush garden park while you're at it.

In the summer the canopy of leaves creates beautiful shade throughout the park, and the frequent benches are perfect for dog watching. It's a very popular one for dog walkers! And events - there have been pop up farmers markets, petting zoos, children's festivals...it's a great little community hub! And right across from (my favourite park ever) the Public Gardens, and right in the middle of the peninsula. Why not take a break and mosey on through? You deserve to relax and enjoy some sunshine.

This is an amazing park on the Bay of Fundy, which records the highest tides in the world. At low…read moretide you can walk out in the bay floor (watch out for algae and slippery mud - it can be *very* slick! Sturdy shoes and a bit of agility are a must even getting down the short staircase cut into stone at the primary entrance to get to the newly exposed bay floor. The rock formations are incredibly striking, and the tide levels shift so quickly even at this more expansive area of the bay, you need only wait for about 10 minutes to see the level change. (For a more dramatic change or to see the tidal bore, you need to go to South Maitland or Truro). The park is quite isolated and at least 20 mins off the more major roads, so you have to be committed to a visit. But it's an amazing place that has to be seen in person to really appreciate.

No owner in sight. More than once I had to run, for what I imagined was my life, as a big, vicious looking dog ran straight to me full speed. I read two 13 year old girls, living off of the park, and the dad were viciously mauled and disfigured, by a dog. Look it up in the old Point Pleasant chat logs and in I Think The Guardian. Last week, we flew from California to Rhode Island and borrowed a car and made the long drive up to…read moreFundy National Park in New Brunswick. I was jet-lagged, tired, and it was rainy. I knew only that the nearby town Alma is known for its extreme tides. As mosquitos descended upon us, I fully expected to have a crappy time. This was not the case! Fundy is AWESOME. Between the incredible staff, the non-stop educational programs for all ages (we indulged in a fun sing-a-long campfire where hot chocolate was served, a moonlit guided kayak tour, numerous hikes and beach walks, etc) and the well-maintained trails, this is one of the most incredible parks I've ever visited. It has outshined every park I've been to in the US. It's tucked away in true wilderness, the kind of which I've never seen before, not even in Alaska. Miles and miles of open space. It was very green, and the air smelled sweet. And every sign was bilingual, which is exciting for a francophile like me! But it got even more exciting for me: In the national park gift shop, they had two books I illustrated!! I could not believe having traveled all that way and then seeing my own work in the gift shop, that was the coolest!! I have nothing but wonderful things to say about Fundy's lush waterfalls, excitable bats, cartoonish bullfrogs, abundant wildflowers, fresh air, approachable and friendly interpreters, educational programs, wonderful trails, views and serenity. I'm glad we made the trip! Thank you to all the interpreters of Fundy, especially Pat, for making our trip extraordinary!

Smack on the Bedford Basin, this is great park for all seasons and ages. For families with kids,…read morethe highlight would be the large playground. It has a rubbery artifical surface which means it doesn't get muddy, and softens trips and falls. The worn-out previous wooden ship playstructure was replaced in Fall 2015. There is a bathroom which is clean, heated and open all year round. As a bonus for those in the diaper way it also has change tables- in both bathrooms. There are lots of benches around the playground so it is easy to sit and keep an eye on the kids. In the Summer, the park is close to cool breezes from the Basin. It is fun to spread out a blanket and watch the ships sailing in and out of Bedford yacht squadron. There is a brick walkway that goes along the waterfront that is great for casual strolls and running. On a clear day you can see all the way to the Narrows. It is kept clear in the Winter so you often see people pushing strollers and older people getting some fresh air.

There is basically nothing blocking your view in the park. Which I'm guessing is a plus when you bring kids to the park to play, a pano view of the surroundings. It's basically a big patch of grass between the ocean and the parking lot. Lots of benches, lots of fantastic views of the basin. It was winter when I stopped in to check this park out, but I think there is a paved path/boardwalk that goes pretty far. It's a great place to walk your dog (on leash) or go for a stroll if you're in Bedford and in the market for that kinda thing.
