I was looking for a place to walk my dog, and we hit the jackpot coming here! It's a great little oasis, within the city bounds that allows you to take your dog off leash and let them roam! It is only a short 15 minute drive from our downtown home, so it's a great and short escape from the city. Parking, which is not always easy to find for Provincial Parks, was incredibly easy to locate, and enough spots were available for us. The park itself is clean (no dog poop on the trail). My only complaint, is that it did not feel too far removed from the city. When we escaped the dense woods, we were still able to see tall buildings in the distance. As well, the density of people was quite high. If you're anything like me, I like the 'escape' of hiking - the feeling of being alone in the woods. I would still recommend visiting here and we will definitely be back here again.

I finally got to check out Long Lake with my dog this past weekend, the weather is finally starting to warm up. There are lots of trails, though a lot of them are very rocky, and not very well taken care of. Other than that, the park is a beautiful spot! My dog loved it, and there is lots of space on the lakeside for swimming. There is also lots of parking - I was surprised this existed so close to the peninsula, great place to take your dog, I will be back!

A dog owners dream. We have two adorable dogs and we love them dearly, but sometimes their energy is a test of patience. Thank goodness for Long Lake. Off leash running and loads of swimming will leave your dogs tired and your sanity intact. Typically, we visit Long Lake a few times a week and during the weekend. The summer months tend to be a little crowded with swimmers, but once the Fall and Winter hits, this place is pure perfection. There are lots of little footpaths to travel and space for your dogs to roam. With two main trails on either side of the lake, it's hard to get bored. Parking can be a little iffy during the day. There is a little parking lot and it fills up quickly. However, if you're an early riser-then you're in for a treat. Aside from a few bird watchers, you'll feel like you have the place to your self. Don't have a dog? Fear not! If you have a GPS there are a tonne of geocaching treats waiting to be found. So fill up your travel mug, grab a granola bar, and get to trekking.

With over 2000 hectares, it's hard to put a dent in exploring this park which apparently extends all the way to Sambro, NS. There is a small parking lot on the left off St. Margaret's Bay Road if you are coming from downtown Halifax (before you hit Prospect Rd.). It's about 10-15 minutes from downtown. From the parking lot there are two main trails you can take which hug the lake. There are some rocky beaches which you can take the dogs on to go swimming if the lake is not frozen. It's a beautiful place to hike and I highly recommend this park as dog and human heaven close to downtown. Keep in mind that the province does not mark the trails so it can be a little difficult to tell where the trail is at times.

Roughly halfway between the first two sets of lights, look for a section of old pipe fence as trailhead marker; 5min to swimming

Biking into the common a couple of days ago, and up the relatively steep hillside brought me back to memories of Italy, traversing lofty hill sides in the Riviera. The plant life is so lush and perfumy, with birds chirping and bees buzzing, that I couldn't believe such a treasure exists that I'd scarcely been to in this city that I know so well. The park was quiet, with the odd pedestrian walking through, so Andrew and I sat on a bench and marveled at the magnificent view of the harbour and downtown Halifax. The sky was rich azure, the wind balmy and the company perfect. We sat for about an hour and chatted, while we enjoyed the gorgeous scenery, accompanied by a sweet little gazebo. I implore you to go and picnic in this wonderful Dartmouth park! It's about 300 acres of hillside, open to the public since the 1700s. Go enjoy Dartmouth's flourishing downtown scene, and walk through this lush garden park while you're at it.
