I moved to Maine in 2018 and have been bringing my pups here for nail trims ever since. I've got two small dogs, one is a French bulldog crybaby and the other is an elderly, traumatized, rescue Cha-weenie. There is a younger groomer with tattoos, I believe her name is Heather, and my pups love her. Even my very terrified Cha-weenie is comfortable and happy to let her cut her nails. Although, they also love to see Tracey too. The shop also has the largest/best selection of raw that I've ever seen. My advice? Give them a try, you won't be disappointed. read more

Please do not go here to get your dog's nails trimmed. I went here yesterday with my 17 year old deaf dog, and they clipped into his nail bed. When I called to speak with the owner, she was inconsiderate, rude and hyper defensive. She handled the situation unprofessionally, and never once asked about my dog's well being. She blamed the dog, and took no accountability as a business owner. The only reason she said she'd refund my money was because I asked for a refund. She was put off and told me to wasn't welcomed back into her store. It was a shocking request considering I was not yelling or being rude to her, I was just bringing it to her attention that one of her groomers made an error. My dog is docile, has arthritis, Lyme disease, old, and walks really slowly. For the owner to say he was kicking, and digging, and jerking around...is just not true. Paws Applause is a smaller pet store conveniently located in the Walgreens pharmacy area in Oak hill. Don't let its size fool you- they have a great selection of brands for dog and cat food/treats and it's quick and easy finding what you need. They also offer grooming services, though I can't speak to that as I haven't used their services. Staff has been friendly. They don't have the largest selection of toys and some items, but for the local quick and easy stop by its well worth it! read more

I have been going there for a year or more for both food, supplies and grooming. They have been wonderful and my groomer is excellent. I have a Poodle so it is a complicated groom to say the least. I have always received exactly what I wanted and I am fussy . The people are wonderful and a pleasure to work with. read more

I asked about the food... and to make sure I got my three dogs the kind I felt was best for them, and the way she spoke to me was horrible. I wanted to like this place, I really did. We're new to Scarborough and we have two big fluffy dogs, so of course needed a groomer ASAP. I called to schedule an appointment and they were booked about a month and a half out - a lot of places are, so that wasn't a problem. I told her what kind of dogs I have and told her they're regularly groomed, so I asked for a ballpark estimate based on those facts. She said "probably $75-$80 per dog", which is about what our previous groomer charged, so that was fine. I knew it was an estimate only - I just wanted to make sure it wasn't going to be $200 per dog - and I was fine paying a little more than $80 per dog if necessary. When I went to pick my dogs up, they had a cat wandering around the store, which I personally found odd (it wasn't there when I dropped them off). Some dogs don't do well with cats - one of mine doesn't - so that just seems to be asking for trouble and like it would be a real liability for that poor cat. My final bill was $260! I was floored!! I ended up bringing one of my dogs back the next day because she had a mat behind her ear that they didn't address, and she still had MASSIVE amounts of fur coming off of her despite being bathed, trimmed, and supposedly brushed out and dried. I'm a nice person - I'm a firm believer in supporting local businesses, and even if I don't get what I was expecting to, I'm always polite and treat others with respect. When I brought my dog back the next day and asked that they address what they didn't the day before, I was given excuses as to why she was done poorly and not even so much as a "sorry for the inconvenience" or "oh so sorry we missed that"....nope. Just attitude about me bringing her back and comments about how busy they are and they have a schedule to maintain. Sorry - but YOUR schedule isn't my problem, your poor job is! The quality of the grooming was pretty poor on both dogs - not worth anywhere near the $260 I paid, and it really bothered me that there was NO accountability, just excuses. Not even two weeks later and they're beginning to look like they did pre-grooming. It's obvious their "manes" really weren't trimmed, and one's nails are already tapping on the ground when she walks. With our previous groomer, they looked amazing for a couple WEEKS. This just wasn't a good experience all around. We will not be back. read more

Today I visited paws applause for the first and last time. When I walked in with my dog, the lady behind the counter looked at my dog, then up at me with a nasty glare. I was so taken aback I almost turned back around and left or asked if I shouldn't have my dog with me. Then I realized - it was because I had a pitbull. My dog never stops wagging her tail and is incredibly well trained - I even brought in a training pouch with treats that I was using to keep her right by my side. She never acknowledged my dog and we were the only ones in the store. I approached the counter and asked if I could have advice on the food they had since I had never been there, the lady laughed at me and made a very passive aggressive comment about that being too broad of a broad question. She was so rude I was in shock, I again almost walked out and I barely knew how to respond. When I told her I had my dogs on a half raw and half kibble diet, she proceeded to tell me this was not okay. Not only have I done significant research on feeding a raw diet, but I also am finishing an animal science degree, I have worked in a veterinary clinic, and I plan on attending veterinary school in the future. There is no literature that supports her claim that raw and kibble should not be fed together. When you eat bread and steak do they digest differently? Yes. Does it cause issues? No. I ended up immediately walking out, she was the rudest employee I have hands down ever come across and absolutely should not be running a pet store with not only her lack of knowledge but her breed bias as well. read more
