I started receiving a weekly share from Lunita Farm last summer and I've never tasted better carrots. Throughout the season, I also got really tasty tomatoes, eggplants, padrone peppers, figs, melons, and beets, to name a few. In the winter, we get every kind of leafy green imaginable, as well as a turnips, winter squash, and storage onions. This spring has so far yielded a beautiful crop of fava beans (a new favorite of mine) and some amazing strawberries. Yum! Each share is packed with a wonderful variety of delicious veggies (some familiar, some new) and a news letter with updates from the farm, a recipe, and instructions on how to prepare some of the less common produce. Everything is grown organically here in Sonoma, although the farm is not certified organic. As I've said, this is some of the best produce I've ever tasted, and it's obvious that the vegetables are tended to with care. Plus, it's a wonderful challenge to cook with whatever is in the share each week, and it's fun to see the contents of the share (and my menus) change with the seasons. The eggs are wonderful, delivery prompt, online store very accessible, and they conveniently partner with other local farms to provide veggies + fruit in addition to their sustainable meats (most CSAs will only provide one or the other). We came across Tara Firma initially via online / yelp searches shortly after moving to the Bay Area in 2016. When my husband and I initially started looking into vegetarianism for animal welfare reasons, I suggested we visit a farm that employs best practices of ethically and sustainably raised meat to help inform our decision. Tara Firma offers free educational tours every weekend and so we drove up one day with our 2 dogs (leashed dogs welcome!) and another family with their 3 (non furry) children for a fun Petaluma outing. The tour was informative and our guide was clearly super passionate about their mission. The farm was very beautiful and the lands idyllic -- we loved the fact that the cows were so free range that we could just barely make them out as a tiny dot in the distant hills. We all enjoyed observing the chicken dynamics around their mobile coop with their rooster guard, and they showed us how unperturbed the hens were when removing the eggs from the nest-- evening letting the children carefully take a couple out. Ultimately, we decided to pursue a vegetarian diet (especially after my husband met the pigs there), but we joined the CSA for their eggs and veggie share + cheeses (sourced from partner farms). We also have purchased meat occasionally for visiting carnivore families and friends, as we wanted to ensure if they were going to eat meat -- they were getting it from a farm like Tara Firma that does it in the right way. The best part of the CSA was their pet share as we realized buying offal from this farm would be a great compromise for our dogs (who were rebelling against our plant-based diet experiment) as we just wanted to provide our dogs protein with leftovers / byproduct without creating additional demand on the meat industry. Our pet share included amazing proteins like heart, tongue, cheeks, as well as more indulgent items like liver and kidney. Even the trotters and bones I would use to make broth in order to flavor / disguise our dogs' vegetarian kibble haha :) We also occasionally received some freezer burn meats, which cannot be sold for human consumption but safe (and very drool-worthy) for our dogs! Unfortunately, the pet share program has been discontinued but there are still plenty of diverse offal options in the farm store! Overall, a great local farm to support and highly recommend a visit!

This was the day we got them! We've waited almost a week for a response after emailing to ask if this was a one off. They were very responsive when I was ordering things. :( They say they pick produce at its ripest but I don't think this means as it is about to turn. The delivery set up is different each week. Sometimes a swap box, sometimes not, sometimes it's awkward to get your stuff, sometimes it's so easy! I won't continue when my subscription is up.

So I paid for a month in advance (you pay by check either by the month or the quarter) and waited for my first pick up. Fortunately there are a few options for picking up your box in Napa (check their website to see if there's one nearby you) including one only a mile away from our home. Yeah! The pickup location, at least in my area, is in someone's carport which is fairly typical of CSAs, thank goodness for volunteers. Just verify your pick up by signing the clipboard by your name, grab your box or unload it into your own bags (if you take the box return it in your next visit) then prepare to be wowed by the amazing produce. Each week is a little but different and changes along with the season. What's always in the box is the most beautiful organic produce I've ever seen. This weeks box had a bunch of gorgeous rainbow chard which was sautéed along with Fatted Calf sweet sausage served on top of Model bread with poached eggs. Best chard ever! I've posted a few pics of the last few boxes, judge for yourself, Riverdog Farm is amazing. It doesn't get any better than this. PS... They also raise organic fed hogs and chickens. Picked up my first pork share (delivered along with my regular box pick up) and the cuts look so tasty. Can not wait to braise the fresh hocks. I was pretty confident that I'd written about Riverdog in the past and was somewhat shocked to see that I praised only their eggs in my short initial review. Yes, the eggs are great, and everyone knows it. But I can make a long, long list of Riverdog products that consider to be top notch: green garlic, raw chickens, pork chops, carrots, daikons, asparagus tips, onions, black radishes, little gems when they're available, .... At the moment, their early girl and heirloom tomatoes are truly excellent. In recent weeks, I've gotten their squash and green beans -- excellent again, of course. Riverdog prices are not outrageous, in view of the high quality. Their wares merit a detour. The farmers (Trini and Tim) and their employees (shout out here for Becky) are all super-nice. So for $15 we got a watermelon, a galia melon, a bunch of basil, 4 bell peppers, several zucchini, 2 huge cucumbers, 2 Japanese eggplants, 4 PINTS of tomatoes in 3 different varieties, 2 sandwich bags full of 2 different varieties of hot peppers, a butternut squash, a huge spaghetti squash, and a pattypan squash. They haven't used any chemicals for four years (so basically organic without the certification) and they use drinking quality well water on all the produce. I'm so happy I stumbled upon this place while searching online for a CSA deal. I highly recommend giving them a try.

I got my first box last week and it was huge, definitely the best value I've seen. Plus they don't use any pesticides or fertilizer, which is higher standard than organic. Organic certification allows the use of some pesticides and other non-sustainable practices. The owner Michael is super friendly and answered all my questions. I'll definitely visit them often at Sunday's farmer's market or get a CSA box from them. Highly recommended!
