Driving through to S Carolina. The place doesn't look clean at all. Flies coming out service window. Ordered pulled pork sandwich which you would think being in NC where there are tons of hog farms it would be good. It was the worst PP I ever experienced and husband concurred. Collards were mush. Chopped and gross. How can you not make decent collards in the south? Hush puppies were decent. They did somehow have a lot of business. Do yourself a favor and keep driving. After moving to the area my wife and I looked for places to eat and this place was recommended by many people. however after deciding to drive into town and try it I arrived to find it moderately busy, maybe 5 customers and the drive thru running. After waiting at the window I placed my order only to be told it would be a 45 min wait because they were filling a catering order with what I ordered. The employees I encountered were friendly but whatever manager or owner chose to fill a catering order without ensuring it didn't interfere with their customers that came to purchase should rethink their career path. Will definitely not waste the time to drive there again with the risk of having a 45 min wait on what should be an 8 min order at any restaurant. Excellent service and great atmosphere. Able to sit at picnic tables and enjoy a delicious lunch. My husband and I got combination plates with barbecue and fried chicken. Sides were macaroni and cheese., fries for me and potato salad and macaroni and cheese for him. Hushpuppies were on point! It's definitely worth a drive to check out! read more

My first time visiting this restaurant and I must admit we were highly disappointed. I ordered 2 seafood plates which included shrimp,oyster, and deviled crab. The shrimp were very salted on both plates so we was unable to eat it. I also ordered the 8 piece buffalo wings which were far from buffalo wings,more like regular fried wings. I came here on a Tuesday afternoon for takeout lunch with a group of 3 people. We went to the drive thru. We ordered 3 plates: small fried catfish with coleslaw/okra, small fried chicken with potato salad/green beans, and small fried chicken with okra/collard greens. For the fried chicken, you can request dark or white meat. All the plates came with hush puppies as well. It's a lot of food for a small plate for about $5 so it was super cheap. The food was fresh and delicious. The staff were very nice and helpful. The place was pretty popular so definitely recommend coming early before the lunch rush. So.... this place is absolutely incredible. This is the definition of a 'hidden gem' and I hope it stays that way forever. We are driving from NY down to Florida and needed to get our craving for southern food satisfied, and oh boy did Paulines Place do just that. To start, this place had locals waiting in line at the walk up counter and drive through (make sure you know what you want before ordering at the drive through). We did went the walk up route. We ordered a small platter of each: hot chicken wings (phenomenal), bbq (pulled pork) unreal and very tangy as they used a vinegar based sauce and then catfish (best I have had, and I've had a lot). A couple things to note. 1) you get 2 sides with all platters. 2) bbq is just pulled pork but some of the best I have had. 3) they take cash and credit 4) make sure you stop here. I'm back on the road to do shows in South Carolina Florida and Georgia and will share some of my curious epicurean adventures with thee Yelphive. Pauline's Place is a diamond in the rough. No Michelin stars here, but heart, soul and a friendly Southern comfort food experience. Take the off-ramp to St. James. A scrappy mill-town with Main Street intact and hanging in there. There was a brisk walk up and drive through business ( yes there was even a drive-through window). A friendly conversation with an old timer in-line confirmed I had found the right spot. I craved catfish and found perfection. Light, fluffy and flavorful fillets, with enough crisp to please my dear Jewish mom. I also craved NC bbq so The nice lady behind the grubby screen window suggested a sandwich add on minus the bun. The NC style of barbecue is different from one of us Yanks are used to. Vinegar-based and tangy the meat is minced into almost a pulp. My craving was satisfied here. A closer perusal of the menu made me want to come back for more: different types of fish,fried oysters, pork chops, not to mention several types of fried chicken and wings, etc. They have all the Fixin's you would expect so I chose collard greens and baked beans. The collard greens were fine. Not as wide leafed as I'd like nor were there chunks of bacon anywhere,but that's OK. The beans were slightly lackluster, out of a can, but I was charmed by the location and the friendly staff- sometimes the dining experience outweighs the quality of the food. Here I got a little of all. This place is no frills with no indoor dining area. Just the porch with tables and window with a screen. The appearance might scare off many but behind that frayed screen was the staff ready to help make a few adventurous feel welcome and sated. Good local NC style BBQ finely chopped and lean. Best fine chopped slaw anywhere, not overdone with mayo. Fish plates are good too. Only fried options. read more

It was as sweet as it could be but still let you taste the tea. CONS 1. fried okra was soggy. FYI it had a batter, not corn meal crust 2. Mac n cheese was too soft and bland 3. fried chicken was cooked well but hella salty and the coating was very light. it was crispy but barely any there and it was greasier than it needed to be I wouldn't go again or recommend it but I certainly wouldn't discourage anyone from trying it. We have ordered dinners from Pauline's on numerous occasions. the food was good but plentiful. i would recommend Pauline's Place.

Service was quick. Fried chicken and chicken nuggets were delicious. My son got the whiting fish and it was very fishy tasting. Not good at all. I hope he doesn't get sick. I had the mac hand cheese, which was also good. read more

I found this place by accident-needed to make a u-turn and there it was. Everything about this trailer-like place is old school, no frills, down home, finger-lickin, Southern soul food. We got a nice variety of stuff- fried chicken breasts and legs as they didn't have thighs. Also they didn't have gizzards. I'd be a regular if I lived nearby. I wanted to love this place based on the reviews but for me it was just ok. Ordered the pulled pork sandwich and it was too dry for my taste. The fried chicken sandwich on the other hand was incredible. Perfectly fried and juicy. The yams tasted like they came out of a can. They were watery and flavorless. The hush puppies were alright but the Mac and cheese was excellent. It was very cheesy and creamy. I guess it depended on what I ordered. Overall, not great but not bad either! read more

Best food you will ever get!! Make sure to try the shrimp plate and the hush puppies are great too!! The tea is amazing and the fish is awesome! The coleslaw taste like mamas and the fries are to die for!! I used to work there. Regret it very much. While getting ice from ice house noticed the tub used to fill ice with to serve customersbwas dirty. Tried to wash it and they took it from me and filled it with ice anyways. Dropped a piece of chicken on the nasty dirty floor, so I went to throw it away and they told me that I better not to throw it away that I better cook it. After touching raw fish do not wash hands before touching raw chicken. Ladies at both drive-thru window and front window handling dirty money do not wash or even put on gloves before making pork chop sandwhiches. It's Pauline & her husband run the restaurant and their son fries the food. I NEVER ATE OR DRANK ANYTHING FROM THERE CAUSE I WAS SO DISGUSTED! Also she talked junk to me saying that I attended my pastor's sister's funeral saying that I had no business being there. And this is Brother Larry Lowery from Pembroke Assembly of God. (Red Barn) This place has a drive thru or walk up window with seating outside! This place is great!!! The food from fried chicken, bbq, to the catfish sandwich is great! All the side items ive tried are great as well. If you are in the St Pauls area or even traveling down I95 make the mile trek off the interstate and check this place out!
