Covenant Tile & Stone - Just one example of the lack of attention to detail.

    Covenant Tile & Stone

The short of our dissatisfaction with Coventry tile is lack of accountability for errors made. I…read morehonestly don't expect perfection or mistakes never to occur. I'm a business owner with over 60 employees in multiple locations and though I would like to think all my team members are perfect and never make mistakes, that's simply not realistic. So my teams know, when mistakes happen, we OWN that mistake.... "100/0"... 100% accountability, zero excuses..... and we will make it right for our customers, even when it costs us $. It takes years to build a good reputation but very little time to destroy it. In the late fall '23, I interviewed 4 tiling companies to provide quotes for a large custom bathroom job. This job included all tiling of floors and walls for a large (5.5' x 12') curbless shower and tub area, all the floors and tiled baseboards for the balance of the entire bathroom and closet, installation of a large (4'x3') custom-made wall mosaic and border, and tile on a separate accent wall in the bathroom. All contractors were interviewed on site in the bathroom so they could see what was required to complete the project, inspect and ask any questions needed about the scope of the project. The status of the project was that all plumbing fixtures and control valves (2) were roughed in (3 body sprays, 1 rain shower head, 1 standard wall shower head and one handheld sprayer), the shower/tub-wet area walls had kerdi board installed but were not floated, membraned or tile ready. Primary shower pan (custom formed cement) was in and the wet area adjoining the shower pan extending to the end of area where the tub would sit, had one layer of cement board on the subfloor, so it was not seamed, floated (gradient pitched), sealed or membraned. The balance of the bathroom floor was OSB, with no baseboards. In short, the entire space had A LOT to do before it was tile-ready. Our first major issue was when one of Ben's crew damaged our brand-new double French doors they were using to access the suite. When this was identified, they denied doing the damage challenging us in how did we know it wasn't there before....uh...because they were brand new doors installed only a matter of a few weeks prior for which we had a final inspection and documented the doors to be undamaged... and Ben's crew were the only ones going through it carrying items since the inspection. Though they never admitted fault, Ben's solution going forward was to remove the doors completely for the duration of the project and simply put plastic over it so they would have easy access. Only plastic covering a double door to a house... in January... when the owners don't live there full-time. I expressed I have a problem with that on many levels. I suggested some kind of cover/pocket to put over the doors when they were working to protect them and that solution ultimately worked. There are various disappointments with lack of attention to detail in the quality of the work (see toilet water line pics) for this level of job but due to space limitations, I'll outline the biggest issue which was functional. When Ben and his crew completed the wet area floor where the tubs sits adjacent and open to the shower pan, they did not create a gradient toward the shower pan but left it as it was with a reverse grade which so water that gets on this floor, flows away from the shower pan and toward the far walls where it just sits and pools or worse, will drain through the tiles where the plumbing for the floor mounted tub faucet is installed and then track into the subfloor. Note, the body shower heads do reach this space. In places, the pooling is a good 1/8" above the highest pebble tile. The attached pics show the reverse grade and the hollows. In testing, water from the shower lands here and flows away from the shower pan. When we discovered this and showed Ben by having a meeting with him and demonstrating the problem, he said it wasn't his responsibility to ensure the water would drain from there. Let me repeat slightly differently.... though he acknowledged at the start of the meeting the status of the floor (and entire project) when he was hired and that he was hired to complete all required preparation for everywhere tile was being installed, including the floor in the entire curbless shower/wet area, he stated the reverse gradient wasn't his responsibility or problem to fix. Though we discussed various issues, Ben remained adamant he had done a perfect job with no mistakes...at all. The result of the meeting with Ben was that he refused to fix the problem and quit the job unfinished and unfixed. Its not all bad. Our main floor chevron came out beautifully as hoped...despite Ben criticizing our choice of tile as being poor quality and cheap. Note: we didn't buy any tiles through him or his shop. it was purchased from a specialty tile store and the price was most certainly not cheap.

We have used Covenant Tile and Stone for multiple projects in our home and are very satisfied with…read moretheir work. They did our master shower, three tub surrounds and a large backsplash in our kitchen. Their prices were agreeable and more importantly, they did what they said they would. While it took a little time to get fit into their schedule because they are a small company with lots of projects, when they got to us the work was done quickly and cleanly. Some of the work we had them do is a few years old now and I can say that their work has stood up over time and still looks great. I would recommend them and will use them again for my tile work.
