Cool station with lots of stores around: Starbucks, Jollibee, etc. The Path is located downstairs and has lots of turnstyles to go into Path. The station can sometimes have homeless people, sketchy people, skaters, and other. Not so much cops or patrolling happening in here, wouldn't hurt if it has more. Path train has always been a station I associate with the World Trade Center. I always enjoyed taking the Path train to the Journal Square Station in Jersey City with my daughter. We would go for the day shopping and eating. The cost was $5.50 so it was worth the trip to go to the Mall near Journal Square and have lunch at Cheesecake Factory. This station has one of my favorite tile displays in a subway tunnel. I can't say how I would feel about taking the Path train daily to work but for our visits we didn't experience any issues. For me it's the only way to get to Jersey City! read more

Clean and easy to navigate. Multiple Metro Card machines, which you have to purchase before entering. $5.50 will get you a round trip PATH ticket (add $1.00 if you need a new Metro Card). Unlike the platforms at the other PATH stations, the platforms at JSQ are outdoors. So be prepared if you are making a transfer at this station (bundle up during winter and peel off some layers during summer). This is especially important if you are transferring during the weekend and have to wait a long time - and, more often than not, you will wait a long time with the alternate weekend train route. Track 1 and Track 2 share one platform, while Track 3 and 4 share the other. At each platform, there are two sets of escalators/stairs and one elevator. The escalators/stairs will get you to the level where the ticket machines and turnstiles are, the concourse level, and then the plaza level (street level) where the banks and Chickpea are located. Taking the elevator may be confusing at first. From the platform, the elevator will take you to the concourse level and there are turnstiles here. Once you pass through the turnstiles, you'll walk through a short hallway that will lead you to the area where the escalators/stairs are. Now, to get to the elevator that will get you to the plaza level, you need to head towards Deli Plus, pass through the glass doors, and then you'll see the elevators. These elevators can get you to plaza level as well as the parking deck levels. The station gets a bum rap. Yes, it's not as polished and nice looking as the other stations, but hey it gets the job done. If you think you are safer at one of the other stations, I'd argue that PATH crazy can happen at ANY of the stations. PATH crazy is indiscriminate. Both my creepiest PATH experience and most gangster/scariest PATH experience happened at the Newport station. No matter which station, just make sure to watch your back, hold onto your stuff, and keep your eyes open. You'll be fine. read more

This station was really clean! I took the Path train to Journal square on a Monday morning and boy was it busy! Which of course I expected. I had my luggage with me so I struggled a bit to get around. I was confused on a couple of things and couldn't find an employee working there to assist me. Having more employees to assist would be great, especially during the busiest times of the day. read more

Journal Square is a lounge for homeless people it feels like. Many times I've walked through and had to hold my nose because it smelled so bad in the hall ways. You would think with a police office in the building in the same hall way they would kindly ask the homeless people to go to a shelter to get cleaned up or something. I personally take the jitneys (mini-buses) to the journal square area to visit various doctors occasionally. All buses seem to come into and out of this station, there is also the PATH that will take you to Hoboken, Newark and the city. Though I have never had any troubles, there have been times where I have felt uncomfortable with some of the people that are hanging out there looking for hand outs. I am just glad I am here during the day and don't have to deal with more unsavory characters that probably come out during the late night hours. Convenient for me is when I leave by the Summit Avenue Exit there is a Dunkin Donuts right there for me to get my caffeine fix. read more

This place is a complete goofup in terms of architecture. It is very poorly designed with a lack of foresight. There are always shady characters around the square and I haven't observed many cops/ security staff around the square. There are few places to eat around which I haven't tried so can't comment on those. read more

As far as transportation stations go, the JSQ PATH is pretty convenient. It serves both of the main PATH lines (the WTC and the 33rd street lines), so it's easy to transfer from one to the other. This makes it easy to get to NYC (you can be downtown in 10 mins), or also to get to Newark Airport (via Newark Penn station). It also houses a main bus station, although the number of bus lanes has been diminished in recent years. Although not as large as the bus depot at Newark Penn, you can still get to a number of locations in the area. Directly outside the station, you can also hail a cab at the taxi stand, which is useful since you can't flag a cab down on the streets in NJ like you can in Manhattan. There's a deli inside the station, useful if you need to grab something quick on the run. Outside the station there's a McDonalds, 7-11, Popeyes, and a few other places within walking distance. The downsides to the station include the weather - the tracks themselves are covered, so you won't get wet if it's raining/snowing. However, the tracks are exposed to the elements, meaning it's freezing in the winter. The surrounding area has been improved over the years, but it can feel isolated at times, although I've never had any problems (if you're coming home late night from the city on a weekend, there will be lots of people getting off the train with you). Overall: 3.5 stars. There's a lot to be improved, but it's definitely one of the better transportation hubs in the area (not a maze like Port Authority). read more

This is a hub in Jersey,city used to be my transit point between 2 bus routes from office to home and vice-versa. This is the hub for all buses,trains/paths -I used to take the path to NYC, Hoboken and so many diff places. A lot of homeless people hang around this place just like any other major trains/bus station hub in a big city. It could get scary during late nights so be careful and vigilant and look forward for your journey ahead..it's great to ride the buses/trains from here and go to almost aNy place in NY/NJ! read more

I was reading "A Wrinkle in Time" by L'Engle recently, and it reminded me of Journal Square. JSQ is like a bizarre interdimensional space that doesn't make a lot of sense and leaps around at times without explaining why. Despite the fact the place is a hub of commerce and housing and transit, it always seems abandoned. Even when people are lined up in swarms waiting for buses or cabs because the PATH is shut down, it still feels like everything around you is closed, the people don't live there, and at any time, someone could come along and move the scenery when you're not looking. So yeah, I avoid going above ground in the JSQ area most of the time, but it is mostly functional, so it gets 2 stars. read more

Outside of the station is ok, with ample convenience locations like Dunkin and 7-11 within easy walking distance, and a Duane Reade just outside the turnstyles. Within the turnstyles, there is no access to a news stand or anything else. Often when I've connected to Newark here I was curious about what was "topside" now I know after a recent visit. Now I also know that I can't just go up and grab a bottle of water, without paying again. Why? The station and platform itself is nothing to write home about, with it's "outdoor, but fully sheltered" feel. The markings for the trains are clear enough. Heading back to Manhattan, the trains on one side are clearly marked as heading toward 33rd st. and on the other side to the WTC. Slightly passed rush hour at 11:30, I found myself waiting a good 15 minutes for a train to the WTC. That's way too long, and the crowd on the platform had built significantly while I was waiting there. On average I wait about 6 mins for any giving train in the MTA subway system, here is was more than double that, and I'm being generous. As a person that relies on public transportation often, I think that can be improved. read more

I don't love JSQ, but I certainly don't hate it either. It has a standard overpriced Duane Reade, newsstand, bathrooms (during the day, at least), Bank of America, and a 24-hour cafe for those drunken times when it isn't as convenient to wander outside the hub. There are also random kiosks where you can buy hats, incense, or watch batteries. I've actually gotten a few watch batteries changed for $5 a pop and the guy was really nice. Another plus about JSQ - at least when the temperatures are agreeable - is the outdoor platform. It's nice to stand outside and get some fresh air while waiting for the train, as we all know sometimes those stations can get really hot and stuffy (9th Street PATH, I'm looking at you). As others have mentioned, the design is a bit awkward. Usually, this doesn't bother me much since I live very close to the Magnolia and Summit side. However, what I do not agree with is the late night blocking of that particular exit. I don't necessarily feel unsafe walking home by myself late at night, but I feel safer when I'm in a wide, well-lit corridor (with a Port Authority police station) than a dimly lit barren street at 3 am. At least there are always cabs at the station and there isn't ever much of a wait. read more

It's no NY Port Authority but considering that its in Jersey City the PATH station is not to shabby. Thanks to PATH its super convenient to get into New York City, Newark Airport and the Red Bull Arena in Harrison. The station is pretty clean except for occasional homeless people. I wish there was a newsstand in there for convenience. There is a Duane Reade right outside on the upper level. The station does need a major update. The escalators and elevators are occasionally not working, very inconvenient for people on wheelchairs or parents with strollers. read more

This post is not about how good or bad the Path Service or Station is, it's about how shivery is truly dead & buried. Take a look at the pic, you may not be able to tell, but there are 6 seats, all occupied by men between the ages of about 25 - 60, the opposite side looks almost the same except 1 out of the 6 seats is occupied by a woman. This is pretty much how it is on a daily bases. It's no difference if you're a women, disabled or elderly person. This morning I gave my seat up to an elderly women with a cane; on the next train a young women gave her seat up to the same elderly woman as the men continued to sit without a blink of an eye, I know women want equality, but it's actually called being a Gentleman! Do they no longer exist? The hell with equal rights, I can still appreciate a man who opens doors, pull out a chairs or in this case offers up his seat. I guess I'll just have to get use to letting the door close in my face when leaving a building, or standing on the train. It would be nice if at least one of the male riders of the Path & NJ Transit who this post applies to, see this and wake up and convert to being a gentleman. Sorry for the long post, but this is a vent that's long overdue. And to the young man who offered me his seat 2 weeks ago and every man like him I say, "You were raised well!" #MyVentIsNowOver! read more

Anything operated by the Port Authority has to be bad, but this isn't terrible. The tracks are outside, but there is a small heated waiting area for those extra cold nights. Sucks because you're suspect to the weather down there but at least you can still get a signal so it's not too bad. read more

Path train in general has been super annoying this past year with having to go to work in NYC. Just switched jobs so now my exposure to the PATH is super limited. They've been doing construction with replacing the signals for so long. Not sure why it takes a whole year but man it's frustrating. Trains aren't on time during the weekends. You have to transfer at different stations and it's pretty confusing if you don't know what you're doing. Tight squeeze in the morning during the week but trains come pretty quick during this time. Cold during the winter since it's outside. read more

Oh it's not bad at all. 100 times better than Newark Penn Station. No panhandlers, clean floors and quick service. There are 3 places that sell coffee (this one guy can make a mean cappuccino) and there are lots of cheap food around. Bathrooms aren't filled with long lines. And directions to bus terminals and train platforms are nice and clear. However, the bus terminals can be a little dirty. read more

If I was able to give this place 0 stars I would. I have so much respect for the police but the port authority police that are stationed at Journal Square are extremely unprofessional, rude, and VERY arrogant. The other day I was walking from the station and I witnessed what appeared to be a serious situation going on. I seen about 12 port authority police surrounding two young guys that were in hand cuffs on the floor. One of the officers was yelling at the guy on the floor trying to intimidate him and the others were standing there just wasting time. They later took one of the guys with them and let the other guy go. I went up to the other guy and asked him if he was okay and what happened. The guy told me that he was detained for absolutely no reason and the other guy was unlawfully searched, detained, and later arrested for having a little bit of marijuana on him. Is this a good use of American tax payer money? Should people still be getting arrested for possession of marijuana? read more

And one time all of the machines were "broken" and only took cash, I only had my card, it was rush hour in the morning I was not about to go back upstairs to find an ATM to withdraw cash because whoever is in charge of the PATH machines doesn't do a good job.
