Love, love, LOVE the ATL Beltline. I visit my son several times a year and we always make a plan…read moreto walk as much of the beltline as possible as often as possible. He has lived near Piedmont Park, Highlands, Decatur, and Ponce de Lyon and I adore and exalt ATL for their beautiful park system and linking things together in such a user friendly fashion. I abhor ATL traffic, but I praise their pedestrian-friendly options. We walk and talk, and then make a stop for a coffee, food, or to admire public artwork or plant specimens, and then we walk and talk some more. Several hours can pass in the blink of an eye. Being outdoors, walking/exercising, and sharing time with special people is fantastic for my mind, body, and spirit. I wish every city could replicate what ATL has initiated with their beltline trail project.

A parking lot led under some power lines to a nice-looking suspension bridge and a trail loop which ran by a stream. Nothing earth-shattering there, but a nice short workout in an urban area.

Hidden in plain sight? I never knew Morningside Nature Preserve existed until recently but I'm glad…read moreI was able to explore this woodsy space earlier this month. Morningside Nature Preserve has about 2 miles of trails, and the South Fork Peachtree Creek runs through its 33.1 acres. The Preserve used to be known as Wildwood Urban Forest. There's a parking lot on the smaller side off of Lenox Road, and you can also access the preserve from Wellbourne Drive; I spotted some cars parked on the street. Didn't look like any public restrooms were available. Some sandy beachy areas are located alongside the creek, and there's even a wooden suspension bridge. There's basically no trail signage with a plethora of spur trails branching off the main one. Luckily Morningside Nature Preserve isn't so large that getting lost would be an issue but there were several times that I thought I was wandering onto private property. And there were parts of the boardwalk that needed repair. In addition to humans, there were a bunch of doggos here also enjoying the urban outdoors. But you need to look where you step to prevent unpleasant poop encounters. Bad dog owners, bad!

This park is deceptively huge. It spans 135 acres and dates back to 1954. There is a decent amount…read moreof parking available for visitors. The park is actually two sections, separated by a lake. The park is a nature park has has many picnic tables and shelters, with picnic tables under them scattered on both sides of the park. Some of the picnic tables and shelters are located along the river and provide some panoramic views. The park also features a nice nature trail that is in the wood and pretty well shaded. On one side of the park you will find a small, but newer playground area with percussion instruments, saucer swings, and a couple of slides. It is pretty basic. The other side has a much larger playground. It has a huge play structure that looks like a fort and has a rock climbing wall, slides, and bridges. There is also a pyramid net climber, saucer swings, and toddler swings. The equipment is pretty spread out and in pretty good shape. There is a smaller play structure for little ones which has tunnels, slides, and bridges. You will find rocking animals in that area as well. This side of the park also has a restroom facility. This park is certified as a wildlife habitat and you will see water fowl, geese, beavers and squirrels up close and personal to name just a few animals. Someone was fishing while I was there, but I do not know how good the fishing is, or even if it is allowed. I do not know if it is part of the park, but across the street you will find a huge and amazing baseball complex that looks like it is home to a junior college. It is nice and very well maintained. All in all, this park is decent. It is well maintained and the lake and views are awesome . I will admit that There is not much to offer outside of the trails, shelter, lake, and picnic tables. I like the park, but I was not wow'ed or overwhelmed. The playgrounds are somewhat basic and probably would not holds a kids attention too long. This park would be great for those looking for a nature park.

When dealing with the emotionally-charged stress that accompanies the end of life for a loved one,…read moremany of us are fortunate enough to encounter sensitive, caring, compassionate and competent professionals to help us through the maze of decisions. Unfortunately, the people running Crest Lawn Memorial Park are the exact OPPOSITE of that. After my mother passed, they made our lives more difficult by, as far as I can figure, simple incompetence and laziness. Simply getting an email or phone call returned required incredible persistence, and sometimes even that was inadequate. My brother had to make multiple visits to the property to move along the process of getting my mother's headstone ordered and placed. All in all, it took us about a month short of TWO YEARS from the date she passed to get the marker in the ground. Unlike businesses that are easy to "fire" when they do a terrible job, once your loved ones are buried at Crest Lawn you're not going anywhere, and they obviously know that. Alas, we were stuck with them since my father and grandparents are also buried there. No matter how low I had set my expectations for their service, they continually found a way to limbo underneath that. If you have the choice, DO NOT even CONSIDER buying a plot here, and if you have an unused one, sell it and buy one elsewhere.

The park spans 145 acres containing weeping evergreen trees that look like they belong in the Northwest along with other vegetation that sits bare in the winter but surely will burst with blossoms in the spring. Historic Civil War markers dot the undulating landscape, along with mausoleums, sculptures and headstones--some still paired with foot-high Christmas trees and holiday garlands. If I made out in cars, I'd park on one of the utmost hills and neck. But I guess I'm a grown-up, so I can eat a meal up there or meditate instead.

Totally cliché, but I'm going to daringly say that Henderson Park has something for everyone. When…read moreI was there, I observed a kids soccer game, picnickers, hikers, dogs being walked by their owners, Girl Scouts having a meeting, fisherpeople, photoshoots, children playing, birthday parties, and people just chilling by the lake. Seriously, that's nearly everyone who wants to be outside! Regarding hiking, the trails are not marked very clearly. The map doesn't show all the turnoffs, and it gets confusing. Maybe it's this way to give you a sense of adventure? At least it's tough to get really lost since you're often within sight of houses or the road. Beautiful woods! As for restrooms, there was a porta potty in the parking lot adjacent to the playground by Lake Erin, and the map indicates that there are other restrooms in Henderson Park too. Speaking of maps, I might recommend a quick peek at one before you go since the park can be accessed from different roads (Henderson and Livsey). Didn't get to explore the other side of the park with the native plant and wildlife walk this trip but next time!

This is a great neighborhood park. If I lived nearby, I'd take a walk here every chance I could. In addition to the trails, there are athletic fields, a kids play area and a great wide deck where people can look out at the lake or eat a nice lunch. There is a lot of parking and the park itself is well-maintained. I was able to find a map of the park trails online, and it was helpful but trail maps aren't perfect. I tried to walk as many of the trails as I could, but I was turned around a lot. We'd also had a lot of rain prior to my visit so a lower trail path by the lake was flooded. There is a small waterfall in the park, and I think I saw it but I'm not sure. There were a lot of rock formations in the creeks/streams, and none were labeled. I went to Henderson Park with a friend who needed to use the bathroom. The main bathrooms are located on the west end of the park by the soccer fields. On the east end of the park, there are port-a-potties. There are no bathrooms near the kids park which was a surprise and why I mention where the bathrooms are located. Overall, I'm glad that I gave Henderson Park a visit. The people who live nearby are lucky to have it.

I know this park was renovated in 2023-2024 but my goodness it is an amazing space to bring your dogs. The dog park area is completely fenced in and spans over roughly 5 acres. There is a central pavilion at the entrance of the park in addition to two gates at the entrance for safety. There are two unisex bathrooms under the pavilion, benches everywhere, dog poop stations, a small splash pad, and couple hoses where you can wash off your pups. This park has all terrains such as concrete, grass, and wooded areas where a creek runs through. When I go, I frequently walk laps in the park and the scenery is just amazing! The city of Brookhaven does a great job maintaining the park with daily maintenance. Highly recommend checking out this park!

Great hiking area! The trail is more level the closer you are to the Chattahoochee River. The…read moretrails farther from the river are more challenging, as some of the trail segments are steep, few of the trail segments are wide and most of the trails have ruts and tree roots that can easily trip you up if you're not watching where you're walking. Parking at the Whitewater Creek parking lot may be challenging. When the weather is nice during the weekends, people tend to come early, and the parking lot down at the bottom near the Chattahoochee River will get full. I haven't even attempted to come here if I think parking may be tight. Oh, and many people think that parking is free, but it's not. There is currently a $5 fee for parking here, and you can pay online using the instructions at the shelter that has park info where the parking lot stops and the trail starts. Bring at least one bottle of water, and know that there aren't any restrooms. Most of the trail segments are marked on maps posted at trail intersections telling visitors where they are, and which trail segment they're on. Before you visit, check the weather forecast for the area. You don't want to be on the trail when it is raining because it gets slippery. You also don't want to be out on the trail when it's dark; the unevenness of the trails are dangerous in the dark. Go at your own pace, and enjoy your hike and the views along the way!
