My daughter and I with conure at the store. This is in the upstairs room where we fell in love with her and decided purchase!
Chelsea C.

Carly helped first visit purchasing lovebird. At checkout, I commented on the rise in bird cost for small-talk. She said "well, birds are an expensive pet!You have to be willing to spend the money for them." My lovebird died after 6 days. She'd fall hard to the floor, cage walls unable to perch land. Her wings were clipped, shed plummet to the floor during training. I bought 2 flat corner perches used towels to prevent falling. I splurged on water bath for extra hydration. https://www.peta.org/issues/animal-companion-issues/cruel-practices/feather-clipping/ I called the store they said they'd need to examine her. I don't want her overnight or in my car with an upset young daughter. They suggest putting her in the freezer. I hung up. They called back-the owner'd accept emailed pictures. Sent 10 pictures from all angles/sides. The owner replied "understand your hesitation on keeping the bird overnight, but it really is best for us to physically examine the bird." But the permission was granted via phone call. The conditions of sale does not state examination of the dead. Next day: the owner wants all info about her and my past conures death (months ago). Hard to talk about but understandable. What wasn't was that he said his other lovebirds from the same clutch haven't had any issues. He talked about gas cooking pan poisoning as if i were clueless. Wanted info on cage placement/house description. He wasn't taking ownership of the loss. Instead of saying "Id be happy to lower the price on the conure you're interested in so we can resolve" he said, "another customer was interested in the conure and would've paid the 800." He said Bird Jungle (Scarsdale, NY) isn't the same, breeders differ, no price match. He lowered to 700 (he had also lowered to 700 last week when I purchased the lovebird) which IS a match to Bird Jungle for color mutations. Ellen showed the conure. She was SO kind, understanding of my frustrations. Brought us upstairs for quiet bonding time with the conure. Very nice! My daughter and I fell in love and I went for it. The associates were familiar w/ this conure since she'd been there for awhile. She was finger trained and comfortable being handled. Then the owner brought Carly over (rude girl from last week): he said, "she has experience with conures and has one at home." She was blank faced, quizzed me on bringing the lovebird outside. I said they need sunlight. Did you leave her outside unattended? No, I sat next to her, talking/training. She warned of poisoning and potential predators. This could have been a chance for friendly customer relationship but it was only more accusing. She put a $20 bag of seed on the counter. I said I already have pellets, a bag of lovebird seed mix from last week. She insisted,"this bag is for conures, it helps with acclimation" I said no, its too expensive and pellet food is healthier. She stormed off! Ellen and I figured the solution should be a smaller bag. The total price still wasn't fair as the owner, Phil, didn't take off the tax from the lovebird so I paid tax twice. I had also had to correct him on price or I'd have paid extra an extra $20.They were busy on Sat., all associates crowded the counter, overwhelmed with customers. I had to make it a point to thank Phil and Ellen as I left. By the time I was driving I realized I had a bird toy in the bag instead of the seed I was strong-armed to pay for. Over-all: disingenuous. Asking for dead bird examination is insincere. They push purchasing seed "for the bird's adjustment." Just add it to the price of the birds cost if thats how it has to be. If they were TRULY concerned about "food adjustment" include a small bag of their seed as a thank you gift. It'd be a way of building loyalty and proving its not a guilt-trip, add-on sale. Typically, you should give your conure three tbs of pellet food each day, all else is small portion supplement. BUT Patersonbird makes their own, unlabeled, seed bags-give them credit for their $ creativity. We all love birds, thats why we come in! Don't pretend we know less than we really do to feel better-than so we pay up and you avoid death responsibility. I would have been a loyal customer as I work close. You'd have made your money back plus some. Communication was constantly accusatory. Thank you for your time and for, at least, the business transaction. To see conures progress: TikTok @Chelseataylor116 UPDATE: owner is harassing me through 2 emails to take Google review down. Accusing me of killing bird via forsythia branch and mentioning concern for my new conures safety because of said branch. He mentions my faith and my daughter. Crossing lines again.

This is a cute shop that I frequent to look at any new inventory and also to take a peek at the new birds! They have a cute selection of toys and variety of seeds specific to different species. The place is kept clean.

Got my budgie here in June. The staff was very helpful and the budgie has been doing great since. I will definitely come back for another bird and for any toys or cage accessories.

My wife and I come here to get her cockateils' nails trimmed, and to buy it bird food. This place has everything you need, and the staff is friendly.

I needed to get a companion for our parakeet Paco. I've been here before for bird seed but somehow had no idea they actually sold birds (I though all those birds in the next room were being boarded or fostered or something and have since found that that they do actually board birds :). So we went there the other day and picked out a gorgeous pale yellow little lady that we've named Lemmy (short for Lemon Drop, ok ok, maybe it's a bit in homage to a certain bass player too :P) The store staff is friendly & knowledgeable and they gave me a handout with all imaginable information about parakeets on it. They trimmed Lemmy's wings and nails and took down my personal info (I assume to keep track of where the birds are going and to possibly follow up - I like this - every pet store selling any kind of pet should do the same). Shop is full of all kinds of seeds (loose and otherwise) as well as pellets and other feed. Lots of toys and accessories to choose from. Highly recommend to all the bird lovers out there.

The Backyard Birding Store

Pompton Plains, NJ - we have just set up a birdhouse and put out some feed in our backyard hoping…read moreto attract some nesting birds in spring, and to our delight, all sorts of beautiful birdies started visiting! Now excited to up the ante, we visited the (newly opened!) Backyard Birding Store to get another bird feeder and buy more feed. I had many questions and the owners are super helpful and knowledgeable. I hit up Yelp to find a store specializing in birds because you're simply not going to get this level of expertise, inventory variety, service and attention at a general pet shop or a hardware store. I was looking for a squirrel-deterring bird feeder and was shown several kinds and how they functioned. I also asked for advice about types of feed, set-ups, etc. and store owner Andrew was very patient and helpful in explaining everything. They carry a large, fantastic, and high quality selection of bird feeders and food (for squirrel friends too!). I was surprised to see that the prices of feed and suet cakes are comparable to or even cheaper than big box stores & hardware stores. And the variety and quality are way better. There's basically no reason for me to go to those places with this local resource, and I would much rather support small businesses rooted in the community such as this. There are also gifts, books, things for kids like bug catchers, and other products and accessories. This shop is perfect for the bird and nature lover in your life, if you're looking to start a new hobby (or with your child), or if you just want to attract some lovely birds to your backyard!

It was wonderful to see so many bird enthusiasts come together to celebrate this new haven for bird lovers, and the excitement and joy shared among fellow nature enthusiasts made the event truly special. The Backyard Birding Store has quickly established itself as a go-to resource for anyone passionate about backyard birding. With an impressive selection of high-quality birdseed, feeders, and decorative birdhouses, the store is truly a treasure trove for those looking to attract and care for local birds. The experience of watching and listening to the delightful songs of backyard birds can bring immense joy and connection to nature, and this store is dedicated to helping customers create that sanctuary in their own gardens. Birds play critical roles in our ecosystems, contributing to pest control, pollination, and seed dispersal. By offering birdhouses and feeders, we not only foster a welcoming environment for these vital creatures but also cultivate a vibrant backyard filled with life and energy. The Backyard Birding Store is committed to guiding customers on their journey to enhance their outdoor spaces and embrace the beauty of nature. As John James Audubon once said, "The bird is the most perfect of all animals; it is the one that flies, that sings, that is free." This sentiment perfectly captures the essence of what birding can bring to our lives--a sense of freedom, inspiration, and joy. A special highlight of the opening was the showcase of fine-art avian photography by my friend Cheryl Colgan of Cheryl's Birds. Her stunning images of songbirds and warblers captivated attendees, and it was a joy to see her work celebrated in such a meaningful way. With around 50 matted 5x7 prints and unique framed 8x10 photographs available, Cheryl's art adds a touch of beauty and inspiration to the store. The owners, Andrew and Joanne, have created not only a retail space but a community hub where bird lovers can connect, share their experiences, and deepen their appreciation for nature. Their journey from passionate hobbyists to dedicated business owners reflects a commitment to fostering a love for backyard birding in others. If you haven't had the chance to visit The Backyard Birding Store yet, I encourage you to stop by and explore their offerings. Supporting local businesses like this not only enriches our community but also helps us all embrace the joy of birding. I let one employee know, who called another girl over. she told me the fish "like to lay down". I told her i have a betta fish and theyre not supposed to be swimming in algae. She said "they would be cleaned tomorrow" (good to know theyre not cleaned daily). She took one dead one and one gasping for air "to the back". Guess that one wasn't saved. Got death stares from her for the next 15 mins i was in the store even though i did not blame her. So i bought another sick one and saved him (hes doing so well now just because i gave him clean water and space). But his fins are all ripped and tattered because he was corroding in his own waste. Shame on you, Petsmart. For real... do better.

I really just wanted him to get a haircut and deshed, but that wasn't an option. Upon arrival, they told me it would take 2 to 3 hours. This made no sense to me. When I asked why, they admitted that they overbook every appointment and always have too many animals and not enough people to perform the pet grooming services. I received a call 2 1/2 hours later telling me that they were not able to give him a haircut because he was too "anxious," but they gave him a bath and deshed. I was very annoyed. It is their job to perform grooming services, yet here they are calling me saying they cannot perform grooming services. I basically had to pay $100 for a bath I could've done at home and for them to deshed him. When they brought him from the back, they handed him to me and said he's still wet because he was too "anxious" to finish drying him. They couldn't even blow dry the cat! To top it off the added a "Special care fee" to the bill. They couldn't even do the job that I paid for, yet they were charging me an extra fee.
