I bought a male red factor canary 6 months ago. I brought it home and made sure it was relaxed and had plenty of food and water. As the weeks went by, I noticed the canary was chirping, but not singing. I was patient, as I've heard some males may take a few weeks or much longer to sing. One day my nephew made a comment that maybe the canary was a female, and females don't sing. WHOA!! I thought about whether to bring it back to Paterson Bird store for confirmation, as I don't know much about identifying sex of canary's, or take it to a 3rd party. They can tell me anything! I took it to a 3rd party, who confirmed it was a female! When I called Paterson Bird store, they sounded indifferent about having sold me a wrong bird. They insisted they have a 30-day return/exchange policy, and I'm out of luck. Out of luck?? It's their mistake, and I'm out of luck?? The canary cost me $200. That's some 'out of luck' when it's their fault. I found Pete's Bird Garden in West New York, who has a store full of red factors, and other birds. Pete told me to 'come on down, I can help!' Pete sells canary's for $90, and made me a deal I couldn't refuse. He'll exchange the bird for $60 and discount $30, if he can keep the bird! You got it! Why couldn't Paterson Bird store do the same offer? Better yet, it was their mistake in the first place, and the exchange should've been FREE! No way will I ever go back to Paterson Bird store! Carly helped first visit purchasing lovebird. At checkout, I commented on the rise in bird cost for small-talk. She said "well, birds are an expensive pet!You have to be willing to spend the money for them." My lovebird died after 6 days. She'd fall hard to the floor, cage walls unable to perch land. Her wings were clipped, shed plummet to the floor during training. I bought 2 flat corner perches used towels to prevent falling. I splurged on water bath for extra hydration. https://www.peta.org/issues/animal-companion-issues/cruel-practices/feather-clipping/ I called the store they said they'd need to examine her. I don't want her overnight or in my car with an upset young daughter. They suggest putting her in the freezer. I hung up. They called back-the owner'd accept emailed pictures. Sent 10 pictures from all angles/sides. The owner replied "understand your hesitation on keeping the bird overnight, but it really is best for us to physically examine the bird." But the permission was granted via phone call. The conditions of sale does not state examination of the dead. Next day: the owner wants all info about her and my past conures death (months ago). Hard to talk about but understandable. What wasn't was that he said his other lovebirds from the same clutch haven't had any issues. He talked about gas cooking pan poisoning as if i were clueless. Wanted info on cage placement/house description. He wasn't taking ownership of the loss. Instead of saying "Id be happy to lower the price on the conure you're interested in so we can resolve" he said, "another customer was interested in the conure and would've paid the 800." He said Bird Jungle (Scarsdale, NY) isn't the same, breeders differ, no price match. He lowered to 700 (he had also lowered to 700 last week when I purchased the lovebird) which IS a match to Bird Jungle for color mutations. Ellen showed the conure. She was SO kind, understanding of my frustrations. Brought us upstairs for quiet bonding time with the conure. Very nice! My daughter and I fell in love and I went for it. The associates were familiar w/ this conure since she'd been there for awhile. She was finger trained and comfortable being handled. Then the owner brought Carly over (rude girl from last week): he said, "she has experience with conures and has one at home." She was blank faced, quizzed me on bringing the lovebird outside. I said they need sunlight. Did you leave her outside unattended? No, I sat next to her, talking/training. She warned of poisoning and potential predators. This could have been a chance for friendly customer relationship but it was only more accusing. She put a $20 bag of seed on the counter. I said I already have pellets, a bag of lovebird seed mix from last week. She insisted,"this bag is for conures, it helps with acclimation" I said no, its too expensive and pellet food is healthier. She stormed off! Ellen and I figured the solution should be a smaller bag. The total price still wasn't fair as the owner, Phil, didn't take off the tax from the lovebird so I paid tax twice. I had also had to correct him on price or I'd have paid extra an extra $20.They were busy on Sat., all associates crowded the counter, overwhelmed with customers. I had to make it a point to thank Phil and Ellen as I left. By the time I was driving I realized I had a bird toy in the bag instead of the seed I was strong-armed to pay for. Over-all: disingenuous. Asking for dead bird examination is insincere. They push purchasing seed "for the bird's adjustment." Just add it to the price of the birds cost if thats how it has to be. If they were TRULY concerned about "food adjustment" include a small bag of their seed as a thank you gift. It'd be a way of building loyalty and proving its not a guilt-trip, add-on sale. Typically, you should give your conure three tbs of pellet food each day, all else is small portion supplement. BUT Patersonbird makes their own, unlabeled, seed bags-give them credit for their $ creativity. We all love birds, thats why we come in! Don't pretend we know less than we really do to feel better-than so we pay up and you avoid death responsibility. I would have been a loyal customer as I work close. You'd have made your money back plus some. Communication was constantly accusatory. Thank you for your time and for, at least, the business transaction. Eight years ago, I found a sun conure flying around and after an extensive search for her owners, decided to keep her. I knew nothing about bird care but quickly immersed myself in the literature and was fortunate enough to find the PBS for her clippings (wings, beak, and nails). Over the years, I have brought Bonzo in and each and every time, the PBS was clean and the care she received was outstanding. I was interested in finding a friend for Bonzo and without hesitation, went to the PBS website to check out the birds in their nursery. I was not disappointed and found a blue crowned conure that was hatched in May 2024. Since purchasing a bird is an emotional and financial commitment, my husband and I went to see this conure in person. Prior to entering the nursery, I was most impressed that the staff asked us to sanitize our hands for the safety of all of the birds. The staff were amazing! They offered us quiet time upstairs so that we could initially get to know her and see if she would be a fit for our household. The girls came upstairs to check on us (X3) periodically and offered us treats for her. The staff were genuinely concerned about our interactions and only wanted the best for their bird. The girls did not pressure us or make us feel we had to purchase a bird. After our visit, we left the PBS to "talk it over" but in reality, the only thing we had to talk about was buying a cage and how we were going to introduce the blue crowned conure to our sun conure. We knew from the moment we held Penelope that she was coming home with us (soon!). Later that same afternoon, my husband picked Penelope up and she has been the apple of our eyes ever since. The staff at the PBS were most knowledgeable in teaching us about Penelope's needs. The bags of food and treats were wonderful and helped her get acclimated to her new home. The staff provided instructions in her care with avian veterinarian recommendations. The staff were very much vested in Penelope and worked to ensure that she went to a good home. The PBS was very clean and the cages in the nursery were also clean and the birds were well cared for. We are thrilled with Penelope and she is adjusting well to her new home and is very healthy (emotionally and physically). We can't thank the PBS for the loving care they provided Penelope and all of the birds in their store. The PBS staff are truly amazing and only want what is best for the birds in their care. I highly recommend PBS and am most grateful to them for making our home complete with Penelope! read more

Despite the name, this gem is actually located in Totowa. I have conducted a great deal of business with this store and have gotten to know the staff well. I have purchased both my African Grey and my Macaw from this store and both are incredibly healthy animals. Have never had a problem with either of them. Visiting and bonding with them at the store was great fun until they were ready to come home. Staff is knowledgeable and will teach you anything you want to know. They also do grooming of nails, wings, and beak here and have a great assortment of foods, toys, and supplies. Recommended. read more

So we went there the other day and picked out a gorgeous pale yellow little lady that we've named Lemmy (short for Lemon Drop, ok ok, maybe it's a bit in homage to a certain bass player too :P) The store staff is friendly & knowledgeable and they gave me a handout with all imaginable information about parakeets on it. They trimmed Lemmy's wings and nails and took down my personal info (I assume to keep track of where the birds are going and to possibly follow up - I like this - every pet store selling any kind of pet should do the same). Shop is full of all kinds of seeds (loose and otherwise) as well as pellets and other feed. Lots of toys and accessories to choose from. Highly recommend to all the bird lovers out there. read more

Staff did not seem friendly or welcoming except for one woman who helped me with food, she was a gem. They have a small selection of birds that all seemed clean and well cared for. There also was a very nice store selection, but I won't be returning. One employee was chastising a customer on the state her bird's toes, which was so inappropriate for someone who's providing a service to a paying patron. I would not want someone talking to me like that, so I'm not going back. Based on the establishment alone I'd rate it a solid 4/5, but I was so put off by the people working there I can't give it a rating any higher than 3/5. read more

I recently got a Yellow Sided Green Cheek Conure (from Arizona), so I was searching for a good bird store. Paterson Bird Store is now my go-to place for bird feed, and the place to get my conure's nails trimmed. You can buy seeds/pellets by the pound, and it's cheaper than buying them from Petco or Petsmart. Plus, since I'm buying the food in smaller portions and not in a huge bag, it's easier to keep the food fresh. The staff is also very helpful and knowledgeable! When Phoenix (my conure) went to get his nails trimmed, they were able to quickly towel him and got his nails trimmed in less than a minute. Phoenix, of course, was not enjoying the nail-trimming process (as short as it was) and was squawking unhappily, so one of the workers gave him a kiss on the head before putting him back in his carrier. This is definitely a place that loves and takes good care of birds! read more

AWESOME!!! As others have said, this place is great. The staff is very knowledgeable and super friendly. They have so many toys, tents, dishes, seeds, treats, etc. to pick from ad well. Their downstairs holds all supplies as well as a great assortment of birds. Upstairs has cages and a private and LOCKED room for bird boarding. The locked part makes me feel safe leaving my babies there without worry someone will get in there. Also, if you ever have a question (big or small), they always try to help. If your bird isn't feeling great, ask these people for advice. Sometimes it will save you a pricey vet visit. Always bring your bird to the vet if you think it's bad off though. EDIT: This place really is great. I called the other day about a bird and they offered me some amazing advice. Their staff is not out to make a buck. Went to Paterson Bird store for the first time as a friends goes there for seed and toys. I recently got a green cheek conure (from another store) and needed some supplies. When I walked in, I noticed they have a wide variety of toys, seed, cages etc. When you talk to the staff, you can tell that they are VERY knowledgeable and give you tips if you ask certain questions. They have a nice selection of birds and all cages were cleaned and cared for. I will definitely return for my supplies here, and also may purchase my next bird here (if I decide to get another). I do not understand the reviews mentioning dirt - I just spent an hour in the store and everything was quite clean. I was upstairs for quite a while looking at cages - and that area is completely clean as well. The staff is very knowledgeable and can speak about each bird as if it is a member of their family. They were very patient with my daughter and answered a lot of questions. I saw the staff spending a lot of time with other customers and also answering questions from birdowners who weren't there to buy anything. He assured me that they had no idea that the canary they sold me had only one eye and that the employee I spoke with was confused. I understand mistakes happen and am very relieved to see that the owner instantly took responsibility and rectified the situation. They have a wide array of birds (from small Finches all the way to large Parrots). I must commend them on how they treat their birds and their cages. Every time I've been there the bird's cages we're immaculately clean and they handle their birds gently and humanely! Even the layout of their store is top notch! They also sell a wide variety of bird seed that is specialized for each bird they sell. As well as a huge selection of bird cages and toys. If you are interested in purchasing a bird, and you are shopping around for the quality of bird and price, I would highly recommend visiting The Paterson Bird Store! I was here looking for a certain type of food for my electus, and the girl helped me find everything I was looking for, recommended a feed, and answered all of my (pretty stupid) questions. She gave me advice on how to incorporate the new food into my parrot's diet and really was fantastic. There are tons of types of feed that specify which kind of bird they are for, and since its sold by the pound, you can get as much or as little as you want. Great variety of toys and treats as well! Up to a few weeks ago I was a customer of the store for over eight years and have recommended many people to go there. I will no longer be doing that for the following reasons. 1. I understand that birds have a tendency to be dirty, but that does not excuse the lack of cleanliness of the store. 2. The bird seed is stored in open containers where it can get contaminated easily. 3. The implements used to trim nails and wings and file beaks are not properly disinfected. 4. Birds that are boarded there are not required to be tested for Bornavirus which is a fatal disease that is contagious to other birds. 5. New birds that are acquired by the store or not quarantined so if they are positive for any disease or parasite they can easily infect other birds. One of my birds got sick and tested positive for Bornavirus and passed away within two weeks of showing symptoms. Due to this I had my remaining birds tested and now I have another which has tested positive for the disease and we are doing everything we can for him. I went to the store and explained this to an owner and was told there was nothing that could be done for me because I bought the second bird eight years ago, but he did offer to work with me if I wanted to purchase another bird from them. First off I couldn't believe that was even said to me, I will never purchase another bird from them and to add insult to injury he question if I actually bought the first bird that passed away from them, a baby picture of him is on their website for god's sake. To clarify I wasn't looking for anything except for them to be responsible business people and do something about selling potentially sick birds to none expecting people. After this interaction I put a public service announcement on their facebook fan page informing members of the disease and to have their birds tested so they would know in advance and may be able to help them and give them a better quality of life. I also included information about a medical study that is currently going on trying to find a cure for the disease. And yes I also put that the test should be a condition of sale. That post was taken down and I was blocked. read more

While their bird seed prices are good and they claim to get their birds from reputable breeders, I'm done buying birds, or anything at all, from this place. Since 2011, I've purchased three parakeets from Paterson Bird Store. The first one only lived a few months before suddenly collapsing into seizures one day out of nowhere. I rushed him to the vet but he passed away while being examined. It was heartbreaking because he was such as sweet, outgoing bird. A couple of months later, I purchased another parakeet, this time a female. And a few months after that, she started exhibiting the symptoms associated with liver problems in parakeets, particularly an overgrown beak. She, too, died after just a couple of years. So, yet again, I went and purchased another parakeet a few months ago. Another boy. Really active and talkative once he got acclimated to his new cage. Then he suddenly went quiet, sleeps all the time, has trouble balancing. His nails are overgrown and his beak is also becoming overgrown. It's become clear that this store doesn't properly screen their breeders, and they're selling diseased birds, which is heartbreaking for the animals and their owners. I won't be purchasing birds from them anymore. I can't take the constant growing attached and losing these pets. Went to the store to ask them for information/help about what's going on and they weren't helpful at all. Wrote them an email complaining and got a response basically insulting me as a caretaker (I've had parakeets for decades and have never had these problems before). They proved that they have no idea that overgrown nails and beak are NOT normal for parakeets, as they wrote back saying it's my fault for not bringing the birds in for trimmings---really?! There are other symptoms of illness here, and parakeets don't need to be trimmed like parrots, especially when they have the right perches and cuttlebones! Unprofessional, ignorant response gave me another reason why I will never shop there again. read more

I bought food from the shop but it was the last time I went to get the food and I found the food mixed with cheap second-rate items so i asked why this is mixed with something else that he side comes from the source. Up until a few days ago I thought this place was great. I had been coming here for a while but will no longer be a customer. Their bird seed is priced wonderfully, less expensive than corporate pet stores. But the problem is that the seed is kept in open containers which leaves open the opportunity for bugs to get in. I hadn't been here in a few months (up until a few days ago). My house is now home to dozens of moths or some kind of flying bug. I'm disgusted and creeped out. Believe me, my house is clean, the bugs showed up the same time I bought the seed and are only in the room where my birds are. I know the problem came from this store. I've been coming here for my birds and supplies now for almost 30 years; even though I've moved to Arizona, I make frequent trips back to NJ and 'board' my birds at the Totowa store birdy hotel on the second floor, whenever they need a place to stay. The staff is excellent, knows my birds, and I know they get excellent care and companionship while I'm away. The store has a terrific baby bird nursery where the store staff spoon feeds the chics, so you'll get a wonderfully tame pet bird should you get a 'new' one. Their supplies, food and toys are all competitively priced with anything you can get online. Although they have a few cages on the main floor, most of the cages are upstairs, and if you don't see what you're looking for, ask. If you're looking for a particular type of bird, ask them to call you when some new baby birds arrive so you'll get first pick. Stop in to check it out, there's a pen where they keep the newly arrived cockatiels, parakeets, and lovebirds, and you can interact with them and see if one picks out you to go home with!
