The gas tank gauge hovered precariously at the 1/3 line, then plummeted to 2/12. Disaster seemed, well, not imminent but forthcoming in the next day. Luckily, Litchfield has one gas station that dares to be open past 10 pm, one that CARES enough for wayward travelers to be able to fill up in the winter at an hour night owls find early. I present the Reena Citgo, a beacon of light in an otherwise cold, dark wasteland with limited cell phone service. The station is a little awkward coming in and out at time, the pumps are right by the road, but if you're running into the service station there is parking and entrance in the back. The prices are a little high, if you're in need of emergency eggs it's so much easier then Stop and Shop.

Well, I kind of hope at any rate, it would be crummy thing to fire anyone over a name change. So it is what it has been, and now they're Walgreens store brand instead of Rite Aid. I suppose I have no grievances about this, but I find I was hoping for something a little more. Maybe something radical, like moving batteries to the school supplies aisle!

There are several negative…read morereviews from a few years ago, but we believe a close look at this operation over the last 12 months is overdue. And we strongly believe that in just about every way this store has improved. Sure, you can find issues here and there, but let's briefly examine what's going on now. First, the pharmacy has seriously expanded, in space and staff. They can use more people behind the desk for sure, but they are moving in the right direction. And those people have been very professional and friendly in all of our interactions with them. We've gotten a lot of vaccines over the last year, making quick online appointments and getting the shots on schedule. The pharmacists have not shied from offering counsel. Our prescriptions are handled efficiently. In spite of crowds at the pharmacy at certain times, everyone almost always seems to keep their cool. With the restructuring of the pharmacy, shelving at the store has become more crowded and challenging -- there is not infinite space -- but we've found staff helpful in locating specific items. And the cashiers and others working at the store have pretty good attitudes given their increased duties. They can get pissed at times, but then it is often the customers who lead the way (we've watched this unfold too many times, sadly). The stock of seasonal items and cards remains pretty good, and prices aren't outrageous for items we've looked at. Everything here is a bit more cramped than before; that's the downside, but we don't see where they get much room to expand. Anyhow, we have found this CVS to be improved and improving, in most ways, and we feel they deserve credit for that.

And then he says if I don't like it, I can look for another pharmacy. Don't even step in there. Awful, awful service. Another older gentleman was complaining about the same. It's certainly a fun stop for anyone motoring between Litchfield and Thomaston. We were drawn to the yummy deli sandwiches (try, for instance, the hot chicken patty) and snacks and the coffee. There are a few tables and chairs for relaxing over your food, and the porch has some really attractive chairs and sofas (too cool outdoors to try them yet). The store carries a modest number of groceries along with a variety of sweets and additional supplies like aspirins, etc. There's a friendly, inviting staff, and easy parking though better be prepared to walk up steps to get in. There is also a large meeting room on the ground floor complete with a commercial kitchen, perfect for groups needing same. Altogether, a joy to stop by, and we wish them well.

The deli offers fresh grinders and hard rolls with breakfast items to come. The service is fantastic. It's clear that a lot of thought and time went into this and it's been worth the wait! It remains a small, independently owned store with a surprisingly full stock, lots of fresh meats, deli items, produce, a large beer cooler with all the local and foreign brands you night desire, and a very friendly and helpful staff. We're especially fond of the nice folks behind the deli counter. Our complaints are about the same: the prices hover on the high side. The prices are generally quite a bit higher than the nearby Stop and Shop, but honestly, the quality of their locally produced items is far higher. Still, if you're buying some basics like soup or milk, you'll pay more here, and some prices can be really way up there. Sometimes we're frustrated by that, other times we're grateful to find some delicious fresh fish or prepared salads. Bantam is not our first market of choice, but we're here regularly for some things we like and want.

TWO, yes I said TWO fried eggs. A MASSIVE pile of perfectly crisped bacon, sandwiched between the two fresh, fried eggs and two pieces of perfectly melted American cheese. All this for LESS than $3. I pay more for the frozen/microwaved/crap deals from fancy places. They offer plain cheese, bacon, sausage, and EVEN a veggie option for you non-carnivorous people out there. The station itself is pretty clean, and have a wider variety on snacks for the weary traveler then chips and soda. The downside is they don't consistently print their receipts at the pump and going in can require a wait in line.
