Carter Sexton Artist Materials is located in Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley within the Valley Village/Studio City area and resides on Laurel Canyon Boulevard/just a beat down from Chandler Blvd and the Laurel Canyon Metro Station for the Orange (aka G) line. It's got lots of fun nooks and crannies with great materials, supplies, service and sales (including 40% off, clearance items and more). It was easy for me to follow a lot of their played out pricing for canvas (10 years in retail, though it's been almost 10 years since I walked away from it and yet still retain so much lol). I ventured into the "Come (On) In" area and discovered some complimentary artist guides, incredible artwork and extra items I was seeking for a sketching event I hosted over the weekend. Love coming in on Saturdays, though it's been several months since I was last in, hoping to change that, check out more of their events, including some great some shows this holiday season like their Medley. I don't have much to submit by their deadline, but highly recommend you do if you're an artist, aspiring artist or creative. They definitely are neighborhood feel with some cool regulars. Caught some warming interactions and references to Cheers (the 80s to early 90s series) between the staff and a really nice returning customer. I'm not sure if Kelli was there when I stopped in, but I've had some greatest response with her in the past online when inquire about things. Everyone is super knowledgeable, mindful and respectful. Ready to assist, but also let you take your time exploring and feeling out all they have to offer. Street parking primarily with a 1hour limit from 8am to 6pm. Some limited spaces in their back alley parking, that I'm sure is super great for their staff/ the Carter Sexton family. Its first come first serve, but you might get lucky. Open from 10am to 6pm Monday through Saturday weekly with some variations for holidays. A must whether a local, passing through or seeking out a small biz to support that does great things for the area, and showcasing a spotlights artists of all walks of lives and ages. Even Bob Ross on display wants you to check out this great supportive Art spot. "We don't make mistakes, just happy little accidents."

Also, it fosters community, hosting monthly art exhibits which local artists can submit to. The prices are very reasonable. The staff are helpful and kind. Each month's exhibit has a theme, and there's always an opening reception. Unlike many art shows, Carter Sexton's shows don't ask for money just to submit your work. Only if your work is accepted and you choose to participate do you pay a modest fee ($15) which is a great deal, because the shop clearly spends a lot of time making placards for each piece with the artist's name and mini-bio, and then hanging the work. You can sell your exhibited work and/or sell prints of it. I'm so grateful for the community this place fosters!

We loved the experience so much that my husband and I decided to start taking classes too--and it's been one of the best decisions we've made. I definitely did not come into the classes feeling like an artist but have gained confidence and skills. One of the things that stands out most is the incredible team of teachers. We've worked with several of them, and every single one is extremely knowledgeable, supportive, and talented at making art accessible for any level. Whether teaching kids or adults, they have a unique ability to meet you where you are and help you grow. As a family, we've explored so many different mediums--colored pencils, oil pastels, watercolors, acrylics--and we're excited to be starting oil painting soon. It's been amazing to not only try new techniques but to see real improvement in our skills over time. Sara, the studio owner, has been especially wonderful. She's incredibly generous with her time and has worked closely with us as adults to create a personalized plan aligned with our goal of making artwork for our home. That level of care and attention is truly special. Another highlight is the art shows they host, which give students the chance to showcase their work. It's such a fun and encouraging environment where you can meet other artists and celebrate everyone's creativity. We feel so lucky to have found this studio. It's become a meaningful part of our family life, and we highly recommend it to anyone looking to explore or grow their artistic side!

This school is a class act…read more I learned more here in a year than they taught my friend with a "Masters" degree in art from her fancy pants art college (diploma mill) she was at for several years. Post graduation (and six figure student load debt) she still can't draw hands. But this place had me off and running in the first two weeks. The teachers were divine. Especially Tim. Not just as artists who truly believed in the methods they learned here and taught, but as human beings who appeared to take individual interest in every student, young or old. Years later, I still look back on these classes with fondness and am considering taking them again along with a new friend who wants to learn basic drawing skills, and maybe even progress to painting. If you stick with the curriculum, you will learn. Practice, and you might be shocked at how quickly you progress. Our class was a short walk from a coffee shop, and quickly became a little group who all looked forward to every class. I miss that enough I am thinking of going back. I felt like I was "getting" the material taught here after about two weeks, but I recommend the Free Class to see if it's for you, and if you like it, at least 4 weeks after that to really have a feel for it. At least that's what it took for me. But after that, I was all in. Like any skill worth having, it takes patience and practice over time. But it's totally worth it! People who can manage to respect class schedules, practice self-discipline and are eager to learn will enjoy this stimulating environment, the teaching methods, the skilled staff, and most likely take joy in their progress over time. Maybe even make new friends here. Maybe even fall in love with it. But entitled parents or choosing beggars who want refunds on FREE classes will probably not enjoy the full benefits or learning experience as they appear to have difficulty getting along with just about everyone based their other reviews. Consider the source before you let it dampen your own enthusiasm for the chance to take pride in your art or that of your child.

Ponti has kids birthday parties down to a science with different activities planned out that all the kids loved! Him and his team handled it all while we got to relax and chat with other parents. On top of that, we didn't have to worry about goodie bags because all the kids went home with a couple pieces of glow in the dark art that they made. There was a separate, and massive, room for food and drinks so when cake cutting came around it was so easy. Also he made setting up and packing up so easy. Also, upon commission like I did with him for a show any Set Decorator or designer or person that loves art would love him. This particular character was Terrence Howard, who was a hip-hop Mogul in the story so the hip-hop vibe that is very much alive in pontia work was perfect. I can't say enough about his business Art Rebel because it is from adult fun to kids but extremely unique compared to a typical art business for corporations or birthday parties as it has an edge to it and is very hip and unique in the style that they present to the customer in Art Rebel! I knew I needed something outside of the house that would allow me to focus and have a mental break from the demands of my new life with a baby. From the first class, I painted something I wanted to hang on my wall. Susan's style is unstructured in the sense that there is not a formal topic presented every week. But she takes time with each student during the course of the class so her instruction is extremely customized and individually tailored to each person. She also knows when a student is getting stuck and encourages us to keep going even if we aren't sure about what we are doing. She always says, "oil is very forgiving," and "you can't mess it up." She does stress the importance of the initial drawing and encourages us to follow the same process with each new painting from priming the canvas to completing the drawing in charcoal. Over the last several months, I have seen new students start who, like me, have never picked up a paint brush. Everyone becomes an artist with Susan's encouragement and help. This class is also a lovely community - we all encourage each other and get excited when someone completes a work. I can't imagine starting my Saturday without this class.
