Wonderful Pasties!!! I'm from Texas and only just learned of pasties after visiting the UP this spring. I have to say, these pasties here are better than what I had in the UP! I originally got 2 breakfast, a German and a Beef and Kraut. They were fantastic! I went back as we were leaving to head west and got some frozen ones to bring along our journey. I only wish they still took mail orders! Do yourself a favor and stop by this tiny gem. You will not be disappointed. The sweet lady with the tattoos was a doll....very friendly and helpful. When in Grand Rapids, bring your cooler and pack it full of 'miner hand pies' better known as delicious PASTIES. There's only a handful of places from The UP (of Michigan) over to The Iron Range who not only make and serve delicious Pasties, but have them frozen or freezer ready to go. Please make Pasties Plus a stop on your way. This is a take out and take home place. I recall seeing one small table. So don't bring a group here to eat. Call ahead and order for your group, family or yourself. Then stop in. Take out. And enjoy. PS - I suggest cutting your hot Pastie in half. Partly to let the heat and savory smells out, but also so you can douse one side with ketchup while you taste the other side straight up. read more

We always detour through Grand Rapids when we're headed North just so we can stop at Pasties Plus. I love the sauerkraut and kielbasa pasty but they're all good. Even better than the ones of gotten on the UP. Grab a hot one for lunch and some frozen ones for the cooler. read more

Pasty was very good, had the traditional rutabaga pasty. Tried the gravy. It was good, but prefer ketchup with my pasty. You mostly take the pasty home and finish cooking like take and bake. But you can get a fresh hot pasty just have to wait 10-15 minutes. But well worth it. The wife tried the pasty with sauerkraut, she said it was good. read more

OMG. If you're only in town for one day, EAT HERE. Or better yet, eat here, and then take home six frozen pasties to eat later. You're welcome. These are literally the best pasties I've ever had, and we have spent a lot of time in the UP Michigan, which arguably is where pasties are from. They do everything right here. Full disclosure, we are vegetarian so I only tried the veggie, but IT. WAS. TO. DIE. FOR. it's a tiny shop so you may need to wait outside for a bit (especially while omicron is raging through town), but trust me, it is worth the wait! Yum!!!! In reading previous reviews it was clear we would be able to dine in so we ate at the Forest Lake Restaurant (see that review) and then went to Pasties plus to stock up to bring home with us. I was disappointed to learn they didn't have frozen ready to go in the flavors I wanted and was advised if I want to make sure they are frozen I need to call ahead to order. We got 3 beef and 3 beef with rutabaga and kept 2 out fresh (1 of each) and froze the other 4. They are parbaked so only ~30" in a 375 degree oven and they were done. They were so good! I had the one with the rutabaga and my husband the one without. I like my Pasties with beef gravy and some ketchup, but I did try it plain too and it was delicious both ways. My husband likes it with the gravy and no ketchup and he also loved his. We had them again this past weekend and now only have 2 left . We are thinking think is worth a road trip (~1.5 hour drive 1 way) to restock when they are gone. read more

I really like Pasties Plus - you really have to stop by if you're anywhere near Grand Rapids! I guess I was one of the only people on the planet that never tried a pastie before! They're simple, good, and hearty. I'd describe them as a beef pot pie that's completely enclosed so it's easily transported. It's also similar to a big empanada. Or similar to a thick (and less pizza-like) calzone. Most of the varieties aren't very spicy so you probably, at the minimum, need a little salt & pepper to zip them up. This is a really small shop in the front corner of an old house on Main Street. They only have one table. I completely misunderstood how Pasties are sold. They're sold "half baked". So most people take them home and bake them for 30 minutes, at 350, in the oven. Or if you want to wait half an hour, they'll bake it for you at the shop. MN born and raised I remember my mother making these growing up and how delicious they are regardless of you're the gravy person or the ketchup person. After about 30 years I'm finally able to visit MN more and wow what a pleasant surprise to find this place while working in town today. I called ahead to make sure she'd have a couple specific pasties hot and ready for me (short on time today) I didn't get her name, not sure if she was the owner or just the brains behind the craft but she was sweet, personable and had my pasties ready when I arrived. The traditional rutabaga was the obvious choice and done perfectly..brought back memories of childhood. The German pasties with brat and kraut was delicious. Sampled each for lunch and will finish them off later tonight. Tempted to return before leaving town to give her a big hug! She's earned one today! read more

This place was great! It was a whole in the Wall spot that you would not find unless you knew it was there. It is really small with only one table. They sell their pasties fully cooked, half cooked, and frozen. This place is as home town and local as you can get. The recipe for the pasties came from the families of the women who work and own the restaurant. They have been featured in National Geographic. It is really some special and unique that you should check out. read more

Wow! We stopped in in our way home from our annual ice fishing trip and we're pleasantly surprised! The pasties are hot and tasty...be sure to get the gravy. We loved them all but our favorite was the rutabaga. The gals inside were super friendly and told us about the area and history of the pasties. I forgot to write my review, I went in February. The very small shop is not open on Sunday's when we would be driving home, so I made sure we were there before they closed on Friday afternoon. As mentioned, there is only one little table inside, not that you couldn't eat there, but would be like having a meal with the employees working. Something to know, they don't make every kind, every day. So I was a little disappointed that I couldn't get all the flavors I wanted - I had checked the menu prior to going...BUT if you do want certain kinds and you are just going to be transporting them anyway, you can have all the flavors frozen ahead of time!! So that is what I am doing next time for sure! I thought they were delicious, if you like pasties. Some who have not had them or understand what they are, they can be a little dry. But Pasties Plus has GRAVY, yes GRAVY, and you should get that to go with however many you buy! Not that they aren't good on their own, but the gravy is quite delish and does enhance the comfort food factor. They will also mail them to you, so that is a great benefit when you aren't going to be driving up in Grand Rapids. I definitely recommend, if you are open to trying them -- these are about the best you will find. If you like them already, it's a don't miss! read more

I am a huge pasty fan and had a Cornish grandma who made them all her life so I admit I am picky. These from Pasties Plus are the best I have found in the Grand Rapids area and far superior to any in the local grocery stores as well. Ruth, the owner, has been making pasties for some 20 years and she is good at it! We chose the Rutabaga Pasty for our group. She also makes Regular (no rutabaga), Beef and Kraut, German, Breakfast, and Veggie, which we have not tried yet. Bought partially cooked, baked them at home and enjoyed very much! Pasties is one of those foods that unless you've had one before, you probably have no idea what they are. They are a hand meat pie, basically a little meat pie wrapped up in dough. Who doesn't love pie? These are hand made and backed there, so you know they are fresh. Ours came right out of the oven. We had the regular which is beef and veggies. I wanted a different filling for mine, but sadly those were not quite ready yet. The fact that they aren't sitting under a heat lamp all day though makes that a good problem. Make sure you get a side of gravy or it. The pie on its own is good, but the pie with gravy is heaven. The store itself is unassuming. Simple white front with small signs. Some simple seating for a few people. That simplicity is nice though. Meat pies feel homey, and you want the store to feel that way too. We will probably be passing through the area again on one of our camping adventures, so undoubtedly I will be back. 67/100 read more

What a lucky find! Driving back to the Twin Cities after a few days on a local big lake and feeling a wee bit hungry after eating an early breakfast, we passed by this place and then decided to stop in for lunch. Pasties sounded mighty appetizing after reading a blurb in the recent issue of Saveur about Upper Michigan's reputation for excellent pasties. Compared to the most recent pastie I ate from a Minneapolis food truck, this place is TOPS! Excellent pastry (made with lard) folded over delicious filling of meat, potatoes, onions, carrots and rutubagas. We ate ours fresh from the oven inside their modest and cute cafe. Ruth said the recipe comes from either her mom or grandmother (I forget now) who hailed from Michigan's UP. We ate ours with a side of gravy and that was great, too - not too thick and not too salty. Ruth said it's a mixture of pot roast gravy and a simple brown gravy. As we ate our pasties, several other people filtered in to buy multiple pasties to take along home with them. We followed suit and bought a few par-baked ones to bring along home with us. I highly recommend stopping by this place if you're up in the area. A pastie costs just $5, or $4 for a day old one (although I cannot imagine they ever have day-old ones to sell; they also offer a discount if you buy six or more). Pasties (PASS-tees) are a pastry filled with meat, potatoes, and vegetables. Traditionally they were carried by Cornish miners to provide a nourishing meal that could be eaten without utensils. Probably due to the mining history in northern MInnesota, pasties are offered at various grocery stores in the area. According the chief pastie-maker at Pasties Plus they are the only place that makes everything from scratch - handmade crust, fresh chuck roast, potatoes, carrots, onions, and rutabaga. And THEY ARE DELICIOUS!! You can buy them hot and ready to eat or you can purchase them par-baked to be taken home and baked for 30 minutes in a hot oven. Be sure to say "hello" to the person who works there. She said that she loves her job, and it shows! She will be happy to tell you about the various varieties of pasties that she makes (not all of them contain rutabaga. :-) ) We don't live near Grand Rapids so we took a variety of them back to the Minneapolis area to freeze and prepare later. I understand, too, that if you need a pastie "fix" they can be shipped overnight to the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. Might be just the ticket for getting through a long Minnesota winter! read more
