It's our goto final stop when the fishing trip is over and we need a big hardy Lumberjack type breakfast for the long trip home. A steak place in the lower level and a very large breakfast and lunch area on the main, you won't have any trouble getting a table. Cool log cabin type wood with lots of cool Northwoods decor. The service is very quick and efficient mainly due to the fact that they have plenty of servers. Kind of a rarity these days. The breakfasts are simple but huge and very tasty. Sat in the dining room. Busy, but came around 7:30 on a Friday towards the end of the rush. Sat relatively quick. Waitress took a bit to get to us, and wasn't familiar with tap beer list then brought a drink menu. Non alcohol drinks came really fast as they come by a nearby service station. Waitress stopped at the table frequently to update or ask questions on order timing, which was appreciated. Cesar salad came out with no dressing on it and was thinly cut hearts of Romain. Table bread seems to be made in-house. Came out warm, good but nothing great. Bruschetta consists of olive oil, balsamic and tomatoes only. Wasn't impressed. Stuffed mushrooms were basic imitation crab covered with a lot of cheddar cheese. Took a long time to get a beer for no longer being busy. Smothered sirloin (teriyaki marinated) was cooked perfect, but also smothered with more teriyaki that made it a bit salty. My kid got the capresi steak linguini, a lot of tomatoes but after scooping some of he enjoyed it. Wife enjoyed the coconut shrimp with homemade mango sauce. I grew up in Grand Rapids and have visited Forest Lake Restaurant a few times over the years. This was my first breakfast/ brunch experience and it was delicious! My husband & I both got the classic Eggs Benedict & a pancake to share! The service was good even with a busy Saturday morning crowd. This is a quintessential up north cabin vibe. I was in town to judge a dog event and had two friends with me. We made a reservation and were seated quickly. The ambiance is old school "up north" with log looking exterior and windows overlooking Forest Lake. When we were there it was easy to hear each other and bright enough to see the menu. We tried the Rib Eye, Chef's Sirloin and the combo with sirloin and brisket based the two meat options. Everything was tasty but the brisket was a little dry. Staying at Sugar Lake Lodge, we drive into Grand Rapids to have some dinner. This was the place and it was an excellent choice. I chose the chef's steak which was cooked medium rare. It came with two sides and I chose a side salad and the au gratin potatoes. Everything was very good. The potatoes were a bit rich for me, lots of cheese and hashbrown potatoes. Husband had bbq ribs which were falling off the bone. Very good. When we asked what the restaurant was know for, our server told us the bbq ribs (which are apparently all you can eat on Monday's) so we had to try them. I also loved the bread. This mini-loaf came out wonderfully warm. So good. With beautiful views of the lake and a homey, supper club atmosphere, and great service, this was the perfect place for dinner in northern MN. read more

Tried to order a to go by calling. Was told they were too busy to take a to go order. Asked if I came in to order a to go would that work. They said yes. Went there and approached the gal at the desk in the dining room and told her I wanted to place a to go order. She told me to go to the bar/lounge area to order. Went to the lounge and sat at the bar and was ignored for 10 minutes. Got up and approached the waitresses desk and asked what I needed to do to get a to go order as fast as possible. They told me to go to the dining room and order. I told them I did that and was told to go to the lounge to order. The gal said I'm sorry, we are very busy. I said I was in retail for 37 years, and even when you are busy, you still need to accommodate customers. In a snotty tone, she said" Ok, what can I get for you sir?" Actually the #1 rated restaurant in Grand Rapids on TripAdvisor right now (sorry, Yelp; I do occasionally cross-check there, too), and we really enjoyed our dinner there. Nice views of the lake, although no outdoor patio, which would have been nice on this beautiful 80 degree evening (before it dropped to 43 degrees and rainy the next day; I guess I understand why they may not have a patio!) Our waitress Terri was the best - authentic, helpful and funny. And they had a big variety of items on the menu. We each ordered a "combo" plate of two entrees - lots of choices, but we got fried local walleye and shrimp scampi, which comes with a loaf of hot fresh-baked bread, soup, salad or veggies. Plus baked potato, fries or au gratin potatoes for $18.99. Can't beat that! It was all very good, too. They make their own sauces - tarter, cocktail sauce, blue cheese dressing - and it shows. It was ok. Burger was the premade frozen patty that have the curves ( I can't think how else to describe them-arcs maybe) around the edge so they look like a stamped out flower. I got mushroom and Swiss. The Swiss cheese was real not the processed kind. It was a bit juicy so kudos for that. I liked the option of choosing the side of cottage cheese - but it was loaded with paprika on the top. I prefer it ungarnished and if I had known it came that way would have ordered it plain. Awesome dinner tonight! First off, we had the best service from Lauren. When you have great service...it makes dinner all the better! We enjoyed two combination platters. The first one was Ribs and Shrimp Scampi and 6 oz Sirloin and Fried Walleye. Both items were huge and very filling with two sides. The cocktails and wine were spot on. Good food and service - 4 stars. Forest Lake is definitely one of the best restaurants in Grand Rapids. All of our food from the lunch menu was good and the service was excellent. The prices were reasonable too. They offer breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but it looks like the prime time to sample the food is after 4:00 pm when the lower level steakhouse is open. Next time I'm going to hit them up for dinner. If our experience is just as good at the steakhouse, I'll probably bump them up to 5 stars. I've been here a couple of times. I've always had good service. I've never had to wait long for a server to take my order to bringing me my bill. The place is clean, bathrooms were small 2 stalls, but clean and bright lighting. The views of the lake are nice. Place can be loud if it's busy time, and it does get busy. Cute little place with no extra fancy frills. We were visiting from Texas. Mussels were good and had fresh parm on top. Got the ribs and shrimp scampi. I was not thrilled with the 3 scampi- very basic. Ribs were fall off the bone but the sauce was too sweet for my liking. I would recommend sauce on the side. Also got the augratin potatoes. The hunting group I travel out west with each year from Michigan is always looking for a good place to eat on our way out and return trip back. After numerous swings and misses we have found it! What a nice venue which includes phenomenal service, great food, large portions, and phenomenal prices. Tonight three of the four of us had the grilled halibut special and it was awesome. As an added note, we called hours ahead and gave the best approximate time our GPS said we would be getting there, and the hostess quite confidently told us she would have a table for us. When we got there the parking lot and side street were packed with cars. To her word, we were seated immediately! Lastly, a huge shout out to our server Michaela as she was easily one of the best servers I have experienced. Based on our experience tonight I would give this restaurant a five star review. Pros: This restaurant had a wonderful view. It sat right on some water and you could see it through several tables in the restaurant. We had a dark haired waitress and she was AMAZING. Lots of waiters weren't doing much and she was running around covering everything and always made sure we were okay. We had a few good meals. The Rainbow Trout was fantastic. It was the special meal on Friday. The walleye fingers were also very good. Cons: the chicken Parmesan was pretty bland. There was a steakhouse part of the restaurant so one of the people at our table got a steak. It was the most bland steak you could possibly ask for. The place was busy so locals must really like it and the fact that there isn't a huge amount of options like in the city to pick from this one is good for the area. I has a cheese burger that I ordered well done ( was cooked medium well) my sister had a veggie burger. Mine was pretty good and I just ate the outside but my sister said her veggie burger was really good. Their fries were really good and not greasy or over cooked. Reasonably priced.
