Stop into this small bakery and buy Margheritine cookies; you won't be sorry!…read more
My husband and I were walking around Stresa before having dinner and we passed Pasticceria Marcolini, which had a sign outside for Margheritine cookies, specialty of Stresa. I started to walk by, but stopped and went back. I stepped into the shop and asked about the "specialty." The proprietor was very nice and asked if we would like to sample one? My husband and I took one bite of our sample cookies and were sold! The cookie is so light and delicate with just the right touch of sweetness. I have had similar cookies, but nothing so airy and perfect.
The price is the same whether you purchase from the bakery case or in pre-packaged boxes. I bought the second-to-largest box. I got back to our hotel later and said to my husband--I got caught up in the moment because they were so good, but how am I going to get these home without them becoming stale or broken? I had a clean, large ziploc bag, so I gently lifted the cookies wrapped in paper out of the box, sealed them in my bag, and put them back in their box. I carried them in my backpack for another week and a half before coming home. Once we were home, the cookies were still fresh, unbroken, and the powdered sugar on top had not melted in the bag. We enjoyed the delicious, light cookies, bringing back memories of that first taste in Stresa.
If you go to Stresa, bring a large ziploc and buy Margheritine cookies at Pasticceria Marcolini. They are simple, but perfect.
