She always does what she says she's going to do and was there for us anytime we needed her. She treated us like family and fought for my sister-n-law's wishes. She is very knowledgeable, being a RN herself, and helped us better understand the current medical situation of my sister-n-law. Mary's main goal was what was best for the patient not what was best for the medical companies involved. Jacqueline, social worker, is such a sweetheart. She helped us with all the paperwork, making everything smooth and easy. Even coming on very short notice when we realized there were some legal forms we needed notarized and completed quickly. Noelia, one of the RN's, is so kind, loving and supportive. She genuinely wants what is best for the patient and works hard with the facility that the patient is in to get the best care for the patient. I once again was in a position to need hospice for a family friend just yesterday and called Mary early on a Wednesday morning. She quickly got back to me and within a very short time was personally at the hospital helping us get the patient into a hospice facility. Even before she could physically come to the hospital she was already working on things for the patient. Everything was quickly and smoothly handled, by early that afternoon the patient had been transported to a beautiful Hospice Facility and made comfortable. When you are in a position that you need a Hospice company to be involved in your loved ones care, it can be scary, emotional, confusing and overwhelming. But I can say that all the staff that helped us from Companion Hospice made both times for me simple, smooth, stress free and I was comforted, educated, supported and extremely well taken care of. I highly recommend them!

I spent an extended period at Sonterra Rehabilitation Center, so I saw this facility from the…read moreinside. I want to be fair: the CNAs, nurses, and therapists were some of the kindest, most compassionate and hardworking people I have ever met. Many work extremely long shifts doing physically and emotionally demanding work. My criticism is not directed at them. My concern is management. I became especially concerned about an elderly resident who told me she was terrified of her roommate, who has Alzheimer's. She reported being physically attacked and waking at night with her roommate standing over her threatening her. She became so frightened of her room that she sometimes preferred sitting outside in the Texas heat. I personally approached the facility director, explained the situation, and asked him to intervene. He promised to look into it. Before I was discharged, I confronted him again and asked whether this woman's situation would actually be resolved. After leaving, I checked on her and learned that the problem still had not been meaningfully resolved. Sonterra later contacted me about my evaluation. I again explained the situation and was assured someone would investigate. I checked again afterward and was told that nobody had come to see her as promised. This particularly bothers me because this resident appears to have nobody consistently advocating for her. I cannot know why her concerns have received so little attention, and I will not accuse anyone of motives I cannot prove. What I do know is that a frightened, vulnerable resident repeatedly asked for help, I personally asked management to help her, and I still saw no meaningful resolution. During my stay, I also had concerns about the food, insects in resident areas, staffing levels, and what I personally observed as a lack of meaningful interaction between upper management and residents. My advice to families is simple: there are wonderful frontline caregivers at Sonterra, but advocate strongly for your loved one. Visit frequently, ask questions, pay attention, and don't assume management knows what is happening simply because staff have been told. I have written commendations for Sonterra employees who provided me outstanding care because good people deserve recognition. But vulnerable residents also deserve someone willing to speak when something is wrong. Every resident matters, whether they have money, family, influence, or nobody at all. They are human beings deserving dignity and safety. I tried repeatedly to address this internally before writing publicly. I hope Sonterra's management addresses this resident's situation and proves my concerns wrong. --Kenneth Holder, former resident

This place should be shut down and if you love someone, do not send them here. My mother was…read moretransferred here after having surgery on her leg. The depressing, dirty, dim lit entrance resembles a scene from American Horror Story and the poor service matches that. The first night my mother was there we called the nurse to help change her bed pan. An hour later no one had arrived and my mother was crying from the pain so I had to remove the overfilled pan while some of her urine splashed on me. When the nurse finally arrived I told her we didn't need her anymore since I did it myself and she rolled her eyes with a deep "UGH" and left the room. The attitude from the staff is astonishing. It's hard enough to have a loved one suffering while you worry about their well being but dealing with unprofessional health care workers who clearly hate their jobs and are constantly annoyed when you ask for help only adds to your stress. The food was also horrendous. When I showed them the pictures of the inedible food they served, they asked ME what it was. The dietician told me that the food was "standard" and when I asked her if she would eat it, she wouldn't respond. When I finally found a wonderful facility for my mother, Sonterra lied about submitting her paperwork which delayed the process. These people are liars who only care about insurance money and would rather drug their patients to stay in bed all day so they don't have to work than actually treat or care for their patients. I've told my mother's doctors to never recommend this facility to anyone and have also been alerting my friends and family in San Antonio to avoid this place at all costs.

Dear Christus VNA, I…read moream long overdue for writing this post, as my mother passed away Thanksgiving night of 2021, but I would be out of line if I did not. First, to sum up your care...simply outstanding from start to finish. For those looking to transition your mother to live with you, that process was seamless. My mother moved from Mississippi, where she was under hospice care, to TX, and the transition of service never missed a beat. When she arrived, everything was here waiting on her, to include her bed (already set up). Throughout my mother's six months of survival after she arrived in San Antonio, CHRISTUS VNA were extremely professional and caring, from the nurses, care providers, social workers, chaplains, etc. Whenever I called to ask questions or report an advancement in her Alzheimer's stages, they were at our home within 24 hours of my call, if not the same day. My wife is actually a nurse, but there is something special about having a hospice nurse to assist you. I know all experiences are different, but I simply had to share this organization made my mother's remaining moments special, and comforted us as well. May God Bless your entire staff. Paul A.
