It had been a while since I'd ordered from Passage, and I have to say the food still tastes just as amazing as I remember it from past years. However, since they are now a takeout-only restaurant, they really need to stop cheaping out on packaging!!! The flimsy cardboard containers they use for their most popular dishes, like the Chicken Tikka Masala, have lids that are extremely clumsy to take off and tighten due to the heat trapped inside. They practically explode when opened. I was sitting down to enjoy my dinner, but ended up having to emergency do laundry instead... The lid sprayed my shirt with a huge splatter of sauce as it opened. read more

Found my new spot! Been to three Indian restaurants since moving to Charlotte and was looking for my go-to, I found it! They were quick with my takeout and very kind when I was ordering. I got the Chicken Tikka Masala and it absolutely hit the spot. Spice level is catered to the university students and the mild spice was more like zero kick to it so I'll be getting medium next time. Terrible customer service and unnecessarily long wait time. I ordered through the app which says the restaurant opens at 10:45am. Apple Maps says the same thing. Pickup time was 11am. At 11:04 the door was locked so I called. I had to call to get them to open the door and cut on the OPEN sign. I was then told my order would be ready in 10-15 minutes as they just got here and don't open until 11am. Annoying, but understandable. I walked back in at 11:20 and was told it would be another 10-15 minutes and they would call when ready. I watched 4 people walk out with takeout orders and a couple walked in and have already begun eating. It wasn't until I walked in again at 11:42 to check and saw multiple bags sitting that I finally got my order. Didn't even receive an apology for the wait. I don't normally post bad reviews but good is good and bad is bad and this was the worst! I was really excited to try this place because when I worked DoorDash I picked up a lot of orders from them . So imagine my disappointment when I received my order. I ordered tandoori chicken one of my favorite foods. But sadly my chicken was at least 3 days old and completely tasteless. It was as if they put red food coloring on it and baked it without seasoning last weekend. I tried the paneer tikka masala with onion added today for lunch. I thought the food was pretty good. It was reasonably priced and had a nice spicy kick to it. I like my Indian food spicy. The setup is very traditional/bare bones. Your food will come on a tray cafeteria style. In India though, the culture does not expect tipping so I was not upset ordering at a counter and bussing my own table. It's all about the flavor and service really isn't their jam. You don't have to tip. I thought (while tasty) my curry was a tad greasy which is why I give it a 4 star. read more

Oh My Oh My how delicious this meal was. The Butter chicken was fabulous, yet the Chicken Curry was the star of the show. ( i chose medium, yet i could've went up a notch in the heat level) i can't leave out the garlic naan it also was delicious! Everything was delicious, meat was moist and tender. I've been coming here for 15 years & always loved it until now. I will never go back. The change is dramatic, and not for the best. Start with the food looking and tasting less than satisfactory. The interior is sad, no ornaments or pictures, the seats on all the booths were filthy. The food tastes bad though, that is the real problem. And when asked what we want to drink and said water, they charged $3 for the 2 bottles. We weren't' told there was a fee. And there was another fee attached which I'd never seen before. I love this place!! Their samosas are top tier!! I once got the appetizer platter with the pakora but didn't love those, a little bland in my opinion. I've had the butter chicken here as well but I just love the Chana masala over that and I add extra vegetables. Their naan is amazing have to do the garlic, I'd eat here everyday if I could. This is the best Indian food I've eaten in Charlotte, actually probably in my life. Its incredible. But a few caveats first: 1) Don't eat in. This is a tiny hole in the wall, they have tables but its pretty clear they are setup to be a takeout restaurant. The service was fine, but don't waste yours or their time eating inside. The food is still served in the takeout containers at the tables. 2) It can have long wait times, but again its really good, so its understandable. Order ahead and don't expect to pick up your food in 15 minutes. Now the food. The Biryani is to die for. Perfectly cooked and seasoned, tons of it and lots of chicken. The yogurt sauce is amazing. The Chicken Kadai is bursting with flavor and the Spinach Saag I think it was my GF ordered was delicious as well. Their naan is out of this world too. I've eaten there several times and the rest of the menu looks great, but the Biryani and Kadai are so good I just cant bring myself to order anything else. Everything has nice big servings too. If you are ready for a delicious Indian take out meal, this is the best you are going to do in southeast of the country. read more

Amazing Indian spot in a small strip mall in front of UNC Charlotte. I used to come here before COVID for their amazing buffet, but since the buffet is closed and it's take out only, I haven't been in a while. I finally decided to do a pickup order and it ended up being so much food! I ordered the Shai Paneer, aloo palak, chicken makhani (butter chicken), Channa masala, lamb korma, 2 butter naan and 2 garlic naan with chutnies on the side. Each entree came with a container of rice. 4 of us ate and there was still so much leftover. I liked getting a variety of dishes and having some of each. It was a lot like the buffet. Indian is one of our favorite cuisines, but we haven't found a lot of Indian restaurants we really love in Charlotte. One of our Instagram friends recommended this to us and I'm so happy they did! Covid-19: you can order and pay online. They aren't open for dine in right now. They only let one person inside at a time to pick up food. I was really impressed with their setup. They aren't doing their special deals right now. Their lunch box looks like a great deal--two veggie curries, rice, and naan for $6. We got three curries: Shai Paneer, Malai Kofta, and Mutter Paneer. All were very good. The Shai Paneer was my favorite. I loved that the paneer was shredded. The Mutter Paneer was my next favorite. They weren't stingy on the paneer in this dish at all. The curry for the Malai Kofta was pretty good, but the Kofta balls were kind of dry and bland. Obviously we got naan too. We got an order of garlic naan and an order of onion kulcha. Garlic Naan continues to be my favorite. Nothing can beat it for me. This is definitely one of my favorite Indian places in Charlotte. If you like Indian food, go support them! read more

My wife and I tried the Shai Paneer, Mutter Paneer, and Malai Kofta Curry at Passage to Indian. I would recommend the Shai Paneer and Mutter Paneer to anyone that enjoys Indian food. The curry of the Malai Kofta was also excellent but it was drier than I prefer. Regarding COVID, they are on full lock down. Passage to India, is just consistently not-good. This is probably the most basic and uninspired Indian food in Charlotte. It is salty, lacks flavor, and the dishes we had, were just thrown together, except the Naan. Butter Chicken and Tikka Masala both were both almost impossible to eat due to the high levels of sodium. Bhindi Masala was 3.0, decent. The Bhindi here, was covered in a sweet tomato sauce, no stir fry or umami, and almost like stewed okra and tikka sauce. It was the best Non-Naan thing we ate, however. *For transparency, I have a southerner affinity to try okra, wherever and however it is available, and Bhindi Masala is a fave of mine. The rice was extremely bland - unknown it was simple steamed basmati but I'm used to some cardamom or something to add some flavor. 0/10, don't recommend. I ordered 2 orders of lamb Rogan Josh, garlic naan, and chef salad. I live 30 min away and wanted to try this place because I heard good things. I got home and realized they did not give us the two orders of rice that was supposed to come with the meal. I called and was told I'd be given a full refund for the rice. I continued to eat my lamb and found this LONG BLACK HAIR in my food. I'm pregnant and immediately felt sick. I called back and was sent to the "chef" who told me he did not have refunding capabilities and I should come back to have the food remade. Again, I live 30 min away and I don't want any more food that could potentially have more hair in it. I have locs in my hair and that is clearly not a loc. the hair was so deep in the food anyway. The "chef" basically insinuated that there was someone who called every week asking for a refund. I have no clue what that has to do with me because this was my first time eating here. Lastly, they have cameras in there so they could clearly see that I picked up this order. I have not been refunded any money and I am 100% disappointed with this restaurant. This restaurant is small and tucked away into a corner of a larger building with many other shops. I found parking easily, but the seating area is super limited, so I can imagine during peak times the wait must be ridiculously long. The wait for my food was around ~20 minutes, and all the waiters/staff were very friendly. Brownie points for having a smaller menu of completely vegan options! I ordered the malai kofta, which really should be called kofta tikka masala as the sauce is more like what one would have in a traditional paneer or chicken tikka masala than it is like malai kofta itself. Still, the gravy was flavorful and so was the kofta, which is exactly what I was looking for in a comfort food. I wasn't very hungry, so I got boxes for what I didn't finish. I also noticed--since I was sitting near the front of the restaurant--that a lot of people during the ~45 minutes I was here came to pick up phone or online orders, which is a testament to this place's local popularity. However, almost 100% of those orders were not ready when people came to pick them up. So, in summary: the food is good, the service is great, but be prepared to wait! read more

My favorite Indian food in Charlotte! This restaurant makes absolutely delicious, creamy, bold-flavored curries. Also one of the best mango lassi recipes I've ever tried. I highly recommend all the curries we tried: chicken tikka masala, paneer tikka masala, spinach kofta, malai kofta, and bhindi masala. All curies were distinct with their own flavor and spice combinations that made them delicious. The koftas--both spinach and malai--were a bit dry but added a nice texture to the curry. The okra in the bhindi masala was cooked perfectly and that dish also had a nice heat to it. The paneer tikk masala was my favorite: fresh and thick tomato gravy, very well seasoned, full of good chunks of paneer. The vegetable samosas were flakey and flavorful. The mango lassi was not overly sweet and sugary but pleasant and filled with aromatic spices (cardamom) and crunch nuts (almonds or cashews, not quite sure) adding a very pleasant texture. I normally adore Kashmiri naan but I wouldn't recommend that as it was a bit too sweet and a tad dry. The garlic naan was good, not the best I've had. The restaurant accommodated our special dietary needs and didn't add salt to the chicken dish so that's an extra reason to visit, if someone in your party can't eat sodium or has another special diets. read more
