When we drove up we were allowed to check out the sites and there was quite a variety considering how small it seemed overall We were in site #8 and if you have a choice (and capable vehicle) I strongly suggest spot 7 or 8. They are tucked away right beside a path down to the lake. Amazing views all around. The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is that some of the spots seemed close together (perhaps for group camping) and had I ended up in one of those on a busy weekend I would have been quite disappointed-spots 7 and 8 get 5 stars though!!! They have really nice, clean, and surprisingly well stocked bathrooms although only 1 for each sex so on a busy weekend may not be the best but I was expecting May Long to be busy so maybe this is just a hidden gem. Super close to Ainsworth Hot Springs and even closer to the lake.

Nope. No. Nyet. Nein…read more How many ways can I say no? We made reservations for two tent sites during our motorcycle trip across Canada. We are veterans of the tent camping at primitive sites / truck stop / RV park scene, so I'd offer that our standards are pretty reasonable and based in years of experience. We rolled in after putting in about 500 miles. Immediately upon approaching the site, we began having those weird gut feelings telling us something wasn't quite right. The site itself is built into a hillside and the retaining walls outlining the park are covered in graffiti. As soon as I put my kickstand down, I got a weird stare down from some sketchy tweeker who I couldn't tell if he was eyeballing my equipment or challenging me to a dance off. The tent sites here are akin to a homeless camp. Cramped, dirty, and full of some people of questionable intent. The RV portion is little more than a gravel parking lot that is nut to butt as far as spacing goes. A fellow motorcyclist from Australia approached us and told us that we'd be best served to move on. He pointed out the sketchy tweeker and his entourage of turds, stating that they were confrontational, rude, and frankly of questionable moral character. In all fairness, Nelson has kind of a hippie artist vibe to it, so I wasn't all that shocked that the campsite embraced that ethos. The staff at the campsite were completely professional and I felt that the attendant wasn't all that shocked that we decided to move on. He even offered up multiple other options in the area. Let me be clear. There is no way I would stay at this campsite with 5 grown men, let alone with my family or kids. If you are completely self contained in a van or RV with a way of securing your property, you'll probably be ok, but you'll be rolling the dice. Bring a knife and your best parachute pants. The chances of a dance off or knife fight breaking out are good.

We returned this year 2025 for a nearly 4 month stay. We enjoyed the hiking very much, but Kelsey ( the campground manager) and the very nice campground is what brought us back. She keeps the washrooms immaculately clean and reservations are done accurately and as requested. She personally advises campers of any upcoming campground events.

If you're looking for glacial lakes and alpine vistas, come here. The moderately rated 4 km trail…read morethat starts from Gibson Lake at the parking lot to Kokanee Lake offers some terrific alpine access and will make you feel as though you're stepping onto the edge of Alaska (but a bit more tame). You can continue on to the Glacier via Keyhole Trail (steep) or take a day to round the mountain and camp out. Wildflowers are vibrant in mid to late summer and numerous waterfalls intersect the trail. You might consider carrying bug spray to fend off a few mosquitoes near the lakes, but the views are certainly worth it! Make sure if you are staying overnight that you use the provided chicken wire to surround your car -- the porcupines apparently have a hankering for brake lines. Have never had a problem leaving mine unprotected during the day! Make sure that your car is higher clearance and that the wheels are all ready for adventure! You don't need a 4WD car at all, but you might feel like you wish you had a truck at times (depending on condition). I've driven it in a lower Mazda 3 and almost considered turning around. Definitely worth it, though!

In order to navigate the park it requires coming in and out of the check point. Even after you have checked in, received your vehicle tag, if there are 20 cars in front of you, you must wait patiently in line once again. I did not know this (a new rule) and made my way around the lazy traffic to get to the boat dock after unloading my vehicle (parking is horrid). Next thing you know, I'm being chased down by a large Tractor! Literally a front loader with a bucket full of dirt. This maintance guy was insane. As I pulled into a parking spot at the boat launch he screamed in behind me, bloxking me in as if a criminal. Then, he unloads his bucket, 1 ton of dirt behind my truck and proceeds to challenge me to a dual. I have never been i sulted, humiliated and intimidated to such a degree at a campsite. I don't believe they are doing mental welfare checks on their employees at this camp. My family's stay wasnuch shorter, even though the views are beautifil. Also during this trip they were on a manhunt for a killer! Helicopters, military, unmarked cars. I kid you not. Welcome to Idaho

The camp hosts who also ran the small store were very sweet. Our power went out during a wind storm and the host and rangers checked up on us and kept us informed on what was going on.
