Beach, Sunset
Molly D.

This beach is one of the best kept secrets around. The sand is white and soft. Not full of shells. Since it is state owned and maintained, they comb it every Monday morning. You should note that it is in the Mississippi Sound, and there was barrier islands blocking the large classic waves. The waves here are gentle. The water is shallow, and you can walk out a crazy far distance before the water gets to your waist. The water is brackish (fresh water from the Mississippi River missing with the salt water of the Atlantic Ocean). Brackish is a brown color, but the water is not dirty. This area is teeming with life. We saw a baby stingray, dolphins, hermit crabs, ghost crabs, fish jumping, pelicans hunting, and a sea turtle release! Though the beach is public, there are so few people visiting that it feels private. This is a beautiful little slice of Heaven just south of I10!

Not to be confused with Long Beach Harbor in California. This is Long Beach Harbor in Mississippi…read moreand it's... smaller. But it's also nicer, I think. The harbor is open for slips and there is a transient pier and boat launch. It's quite nice and in very good condition*. There is a permanent structure with restrooms and the pier extends quite far into the Gulf. I had a nice visit. * After I visited, Hurricane Zeta passed through and caused "wide spread heavy damage." The harbor is closed till further notice. [Review 14197 overall, 1519 of 2020, number 87 in Mississippi.]

It does not appear that the eyesore of an unused and disrepaired harbor is going away any time soon. The city website has no updated info on this, nor on the nearby public pier left in disrepair and closed. The appearance of Long Beach waterfront is now much worse because of what appears to be seawall or breakwater repair around the east side of the harbor. This slow-going work has appeared to only produce an ugly mountain of rubble on an otherwise attractive beach. The area has the appearance of an industrial dump site, and must be as much a detriment to local business as it is a discouragement to residents and visitors.

As the name implies, there are cannons and memorials to local veterans and Katrina victims. Very respectful and nicely done. Lots of trees and shade. There are public restrooms available. There is a playground and a splash pad and lots of benches to sit and take it all in. If you are a walker (like me), a walking trail meanders through the park and has exercise stations every so often. It's more of a trail/path than a track. The surface is loose, recycled tires or rubber mulch so it's nice for a stroll but you won't get any speed up. Since the park is small, you won't get any distance unless you walk a zillion laps around. I was there on a Saturday morning and there was a Craft fair/Farmer's market going on, with a lot of vendors, artists, and growers all peddling their wares. There were some tasty-looking food trucks too. I didn't ask but it seems like the market is a regular event. It may be every Saturday, and certainly weather-dependent, but I didn't get to find out how often.

From yelping there wasn't much parks with good reviews so we decided to try this out. There wasn't much photos from other reviews on this park so I'm fixing that. I'm pretty impressed because it's just the perfect spot. Lots of shade for mommy's to lay a picnic nap down and let the kids play close by. Also glad to carry a picnic mat in reasons like today. There is also a under 3 play area, haven't tried it out but looks small but good. Splash pad is near by but not open. FYI... if your coming from Gulfport and needing to get lunch on the way to park there is only a McDonald's and Burger King. McDonald's on a picnic mat made this such a perfect day!

The owner, Dan, was super friendly and informative for first timers! We rented two boards and our girls ages 5 and 7 sat on the front of the boards. Started out by ending up in a very undesirable location behind the hospital in Gulfport. Definitely not where the Friendship Oak ever lived. Did some more searching online and found it about 15 minutes away on the University of Southern Miss campus right across from the ocean. So, that being said, when you are looking for directions just punch in University of Southern Miss in Gulfport. When you pull into the campus you will see the tree to the left. You will take the roundabout to your left and can park nearby in some of the visitor parking spots. When I was there there were very few cars around, so I found a parking spot right near the tree in front of Hardy Hall. The tree is just awesome. It was planted back in 1487. Wrap your mind around that. Think of all the changes to the area, all the people who have walked by it, sat under it, climbed on its beautiful branches. Then think of all of the natural disasters that it was endured, surviving when so much around it has been destroyed. Unfortunately, but I guess understandably, they have the tree roped off these days so I couldn't get as close to it as I'd have liked. I didn't want to climb on her, per se, but I would have loved to have been able to stand under her branches and be in her world a bit. I think that would be an amazing experience. But alas, I was only able to walk around her to admire her and take a few pictures. Across the parking lot there are more oak trees on campus that are not as majestic but are definitely beautiful.

Great little quick stop if you're in the area. I wouldn't drive out of the way as there's not much…read moreto it but it was a cool piece of history.
