After two months since my haircut I'm still in awe at how I can just wake up and put minimal effort into making my hair look good. I don't even know what Margo did that was different than the others but it's been freeing. I've had many hairstylists over the years across Canada and also in the UK. I get anxious when booking with a new stylist but Margo immediately put me at ease. She exudes confidence without arrogance. She listened to my preferences and adjusted along the way. I don't think the location's physically accessible, as there are 2-3 steps in the front. I didn't use the bathroom, so I can't comment on that. I visited Rachel, and her services were fabulous. I had wanted a dramatic hair change, and brought photos. For the first time in my life, my haircut was exactly like the photos I brought in. I don't think I've had such a successful haircut before. Don't get me wrong, I love the salon experience, I just can't justify salon prices to maintain that "freshly cut" look to my hair. Somerset Hair Studio is near the corner of Bank and Somerset, on the north side of the street. The space is a bit dated, not fancy, but clean and pleasant. When I arrived the woman at the counter greeted me enthusiastically, offering me tea or water and inviting me to take a seat until Nick was ready for me. After a brief few-minute wait, I took my seat in the chair. After showing Nick a photo of what I'd like to have done, he confirmed that I wanted lots of layers, and then went to town. I have never had anyone approach cutting my hair with as much confidence. Like I said before, it wasn't fancy, he didn't wash my hair before cutting it or style my hair before I left. Given that the cut was $20, that it only tok 20 minutes and that it was exactly what I had asked for, this was probably the best hair cut I've ever had. I'm looking forward to going back in 6 weeks for a trim.

My mom and I have been getting our hair cut here for years and years. Even after we moved to a different city, every time we visited Ottawa we would get our hair cut at Anna's. She remembers us every time! I am not kidding you when I say they give THE BEST head massages EVER. The massage lasts so much longer than at other hair salons and it's so relaxing that you're practically incapacitated after it! Their hair is also great - you can look through their many hairstyle books or bring in a picture of your own and they'll try to match it with your face shape, features, age, and personal style. This style is especially popular in Asia so I trusted an Asian hairstylist to cut them. I gave him specific instructions on how I wanted them to be cut and showed some pictures too. He seemed like he understood well until he started chopping off my hair all the way above my eyebrows even though I had told him to only cut it to one centimetre below my eyebrows. I told him that he had cut them too short but then he just started saying that it looked better this way and that this was what the style in the pictures I showed him looked like, etc... I was extremely upset at that point, but since nothing much could be done about it, I held it in. After that I got my ends trimmed off. I would have rated the experience one star because of the horribly short bangs, but they were quite polite so I'll give them a star for that. I will not be returning.

They also change your "hair length" (as they charge more for longer hair) if your appointment takes more than 45 minute. This is only actually your scheduled appointment time too, if the person before you took longer and you're seen later as a result of that also expect to be dinged with this fee. I would suggest to the business just to add a price breakdown on the website with the costs for cuts at each length with each level of hair stylist just to allow for customers to be more well informed before coming in and so that nothing is a surprise! Otherwise the staff is very nice, the vibe is that they all get along well and there's conversation all around. The stylist I had was Nina and she did a good job and was absolutely lovely!

Laura (my stylist extraordinaire) assured me upon booking that it would be a breeze, and she was right. This location is super conveniently located next to a pay and display parking lot. The prices are totally reasonable, and they have short term (2 hour max) and long term (whole day) options available. What a relief! Leading up to my appointment I had been indecisive, to say the least. Laura was patient and helpful with helping me to decide on a look that was close to what I pictured, but also achievable in one shot (I tend to want really big changes that take many, many procedures, and Laura always manages to help me get as close as possible in one go so that I don't leave disappointed). The rest is pretty standard- I have dark hair and had booked in for highlights and color, so my visit was fairly lengthy. While I was there staff was polite and friendly, and it was very clear they have positive relationships with their clients. One of my friends came to meet me and was so impressed she herself is looking forward to her own visit in the near future. If you're looking for a good spot for a cut or colour, hit this place up. Ask for Laura. She is AMAZING.
