Irish Houses of Parliament, more commonly known today as the Bank of Ireland. The building opened in 1748 and was the world's first purposefully built two-chamber parliament house.
Since Ireland was a part of Great Britain, all political decisions needed to be made in London rather than Dublin. In fact, the Irish deputies had to travel to England every single time a vote was held with the rest of the British Parliament. Talk about a long commute to the office!
While this building is now the headquarters for the Bank of Ireland, visitors are still encouraged to roam around the exterior of the building. After sunset, the surrounding pillars and statues are brightly lit up to emphasize the brilliant architecture of this historical landmark. read more
