Currently protected by a fence due to the construction of the rail that goes past Trinity College, this high statue memorializes Henry Grattan, who campaigned for the legislative freedom of the Irish Parliament in the late 18th century.
Among other positions, Grattan opposed the Act of Union 1800 that merged the Kingdoms of Ireland and Great Britain but later sat as a member of the united Parliament in London.
Born 3 July 1746, he died 6 June 1820. He is buried in Westminster Abbey, quite close to the tombs of both Pitt and Fox. A statue is in the Outer Lobby of the Palace of Westminster.
And of course, Grattan Bridge is named in his honor (honour?). read more
