This place looked like it was going out of business. The shelves were half empty, and the produce was mediocre at best.

Horrocks Market, Lansing, Michigan…read more WHOA! This place is HUGE! We walked into Horrocks Market expecting a market, and what we found was practically a small city devoted to food, flowers, gardening, and just about anything else you can imagine. The variety is incredible. Fresh produce, prepared foods, a bakery, flowers (including some gorgeous exotic varieties), gardening supplies, paper goods, wind chimes, specialty items, and so much more. You can wander around for ages and still discover something you missed. I even counted the soups, and they had around 36 different varieties available to take home or enjoy there. THIRTY-SIX! At that point, choosing a soup becomes a serious life decision. There is also plenty to tempt your taste buds, with freshly prepared food and all kinds of goodies. The popcorn-making area caught our attention, and the popcorn looked wonderful. The only catch? You had to buy a gigantic bag for about $8. We were a group of four, not a family preparing for winter hibernation, so we passed. The cinnamon rolls looked equally tempting, very much in the Cinnabon style, but at around $9 for one, we decided that our sweet tooth could survive without one. Coming from the Chicago area, I found many of the prices surprisingly high. There is certainly a lot to choose from, but your wallet may need a little pep talk before you go shopping! One of the nicest surprises was the atmosphere on Friday. There was a live band playing, and lots of people had gathered to listen. The music was free, and you could grab a beer, a glass of wine, or another drink and simply sit back and enjoy the scene. It was a fun, lively atmosphere, although the music was a little loud for casual conversation. What impressed me most was the sheer variety. This isn't just a place to buy groceries. It's somewhere to explore, browse, grab a bite, admire the flowers, discover unusual products, and enjoy a little entertainment along the way. My advice? Definitely visit, but go for the experience rather than planning to fill your shopping cart. There is so much to see and enjoy, even if you decide to keep your wallet firmly in your pocket. Horrocks Market is an experience all on its own. Come curious, leave yourself plenty of time to explore, and don't say I didn't warn you about the size of the place!

I can dig it, though, because sometimes I am that person. But also, sometimes I am not that person, and I'm especially not that person when I just want to find a fully stocked aisle of children's medicine (Tylenol in bubble gum flavor, in fact) at a good price. Thankfully, Bridge Street Market is a little bougie, but not so bougie that it loses its Midwest Meijer roots. Anyway, I picked up my children's Tylenol, but I also stopped by the wine section before I checked out. Bridge Street Market has a large and fun wine area. I say fun because they take the time to label some of the wines on display with tasting notes and other descriptors. I was in the Italian section, so I picked up a bottle of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, just based on how it was displayed on the shelf. The merchandising people at Bridge Street are doing a good job -- they made me pick up wine on a whim! (Which, to be honest, isn't that difficult, but still.) All of the checkout lanes are self-check-out, but there are people standing by to help.

I was shopping for breakfast and they had a whole lotta egg choices, my favorite bacon from Wisconsin, and a lot of cheese! Also good wine selection. I like this store- can't say much to other prices for my one time trip. Man I DO WANT a real cashier- that's a need- I like a human at checkout.

I love going in and just browsing because there's so much to see. Check out the local produce, bulk snacks and treats, large deli case, meat counter, greenhouse, and more! There are always deals and sales, and I often will just pop by without a list, which is dangerous but fun. (I lead a thrilling life, I tell you what. lol) The last time Nate and I were at Kingma's, I got a pork shoulder and some delicious local Little Rooster hamburger buns to make pulled pork. The meat counter employees were helpful and friendly. We also got a beautiful potted mum from the greenhouse - they had tons of different colors and sizes, perfect for fall decor. Kingma's also houses Sparrow Coffee, a cute little coffee counter tucked away on the side of the building. There is ample parking in their designated lot, but you'll see plenty of area neighbors walking to and from Kingma's. The aisles can be a little cramped, but I think it adds to the charm. Love having this local gem near our house!

The produce always looks fresh and we have never had a poor tasting item. The meat/ seafood counter has a great selection. There's a mini cheese basket where you can try small amounts of each cheese, we've mostly paid $1-2 each for these! Definitely not a place you can complete all of your shopping but always worth going to.
