Great library! It has been renovated in the past decade or so and there is a large selection of books and DVDs to choose from.

Hmm. I guess the fact that I'm the one adding this listing to Yelp says a lot about the current…read morestate of Lowell. Once the stomping grounds of such intellectuals as Kerouac, Whistler and even Poe, for a time, the library is now mostly a tomb and a shrine to days gone by. This library is so spectacular though, it's part of the reason we moved here to begin with. The service is so-so by library standards (my mom was a librarian for 10 years, so I'm picky), and the computer search system is AWful, but you can just wander around in it like it's a giant old mansion and let the books find you. There are HUGE historical paintings on the main floor of old revolutionary stuff, plus a few artifacts from the bygone era. The library is also a memorial to fallen soldiers, and their hallowed names grace the walls and halls of the buiding and stairwells, casting a ghostly reverence on passers-by. Outside, it looks like some sort of gothic cathedral, complete with relief scuplture and some old cannons from our bloodied past. Inside, there are 5 floors of books, books and more books, plus the ghost of Jack Kerouac wandering around. Say hi if you see him. As libraries go, the audiovisual section is rather poor, but they have a huge children's section. Great place to take your kid on any rainy afternoon and let them delve into the depths of their own imagination. Here are some stats and info tidbits from their website: From its first collection of 3,500 volumes, the Pollard Memorial Library today houses a collection of approximately 236,000 volumes, plus videos, CDs, DVDs, microfilm collections and museum passes. Membership in the Merrimack Valley Library Consortium gives Lowell residents direct access to the holdings of 35 libraries in the region. Circulation of materials amounts to almost 250,000 annually, with approximately one-third of this activity occurring in the children's collection. Although the library as an institution was established in 1844, this building dates back to 1893, and it's still in great shape. The attention to detail regarding the interior (and exterior) ornamentation is breathtaking. Plus, they have on display the largest piece of porcelain to ever come out of Japan, in the form of a huge vase on the main stairwell. Park downtown or in a garage and walk, though, since the parking situation is pretty non-existent. There's a bus stop right in front, but don't be put-off. The main entrance is around the side for nwo, since the front doors are closed off for some reason. Also, they have weird hours, closing at 9 M-Th, but then at 5pm on Fri and Sat. See the website for more details on events, hours and library materials.

It's 11pm on Sunday and your usual wifi hotspot is closed, but you still have some online research…read moreleft for that report due at 9am on Monday and working at home is not an option. Have no fear, Lydon Library is here! You can plug in and log on until 2am Sunday thru Thursday during the academic year (September-May)... yes, I said 2AM you procrastinating over-achiever!! Most people are being stupid or sleeping at that hour, but here at UMass Lowell the future engineers and scientists are cramming in their last few hours of studying. (See website for full hours of operation.) This could be Lowell's best kept secret- especially the library's new second floor "Learning Commons" with a variety of seating and table options. Admittedly, I have a slight furniture crush on the acrylic tables that don't overheat my laptop like traditional wood tables do. For the awesome convenience of free late night fast internet you will pay a small price. The entrance is somewhat obscured by Alumni Hall and parking is a bit of an issue. You might get lucky if it's after 5pm and a spot is available behind Cumnock or Southwick Hall. The closest public parking lot is up the street near Egg Roll Cafe- about two blocks from the library. Since EC and DD close before 10pm, your nearest caffeine addiction can be cured by 7-Eleven on Mammoth Rd. Now that you have the power of insider knowledge, I expect that you'll only use it for forces of good.

The city and…read moreUMASS Lowell have thrown a lot of money at development, and you can feel the change in the city from 5-10 years ago. Most of the old mills downtown have been developed into apartments and/or artist studio spaces, with one more set to be finished by 2017, and the city has put a lot of effort into making downtown a place where people can happily live. These are some of the things new to the city in the past 5 years: -Mill No. 5 - A mill space that has been developed into several store fronts, including: -Sutra Studio (Yoga) -Coffee and Cotton (Coffee Shop) -Luna Theater (Independent Theater) -Mill City Grows - Local Farmer's Market organization. -Run a weekly Farmer's Market in Mill No. 5 that's open year-round -Run a summer Farmer's Market by the City Hall -Works specifically with SNAP and WIC beneficiaries -Lowell Food and Wine Festival - Run by Mill City Grows over a full weekend. Included: -Food Truck Madness: 15+ Food Trucks in Jack Kerouac Park -Tacos and Tequila -Sips N' Sweets -Grand Tasting Event: 30+ Food and Alcohol vendors, seriously a blast. -Counting House Lofts - Finished in 2015 For anyone who's even a mild foodie, there are a ton of options: -Blue Taleh - Japanese and Thai. Great sport for spicy food. -El Potro - Mexican, with al fresco dining and a mariachi band in warm weather. -Athenian Corner - A Greek staple in the area for 40-ish years. Live music and bellydancing. -Fuse - Locally sourced food with a menu that changes weekly. Just learned they have Sunday brunch (12-3), so that's on my to do list. -Cobblestones - Local fancy-pants American standard fare, with some special things like fish-tacos and vegetarian chili. Some other things that make living here enjoyable: -The Riverwalk is absolutely beautiful, and super quiet and peaceful. -Lowell Folk Festival - A weekend of food, music, international textiles, etc. A summer highlight. -Lowell Summer Music Series - Open air concert series. -Lots of live music in the bar scene. -A very multicultural city. Lowell is the third most racially diverse city in MA, however unlike Boston it is more integrated. One of my big complaints in Brighton was that I was only surround by other young, white professionals, and young, white and east asian students. There was very little racial or socio-economic diversity. In my building I have met other tenants who are African, Latino, Cambodian, African-American, Chinese, White, etc. and instead of just young-professionals there are retirees, students, families, singles, etc. I appreciate being surrounded by people who are different from me, which makes Lowell a particularly nice fit. Chris M. has an out-dated vision of a Lowell that is overrun with crime and drugs. There is crime, but it's primarily in-fighting, so they only thing to be really worried about is getting in a drunken fight, which can happen anywhere. I've had someone try to sell me weed, but that has also happened on Boston Common, sooooo say "No thank you" and keep walking. Yes, there as been a rise in heroin use, but that is most certainly not unique to Lowell. I'm not sure if I would raise kids in Lowell because the school system has some struggles, but sans children this is most definitely a good place to live, and will only be getting better.

Tacos Lupitas is a must hit on the beautiful north side of Lowell. Umass Lowell has a beautiful must masterpiece called fax hall. Legend has it fox hall took 1000 years to build. I love Lowell and I love life. Great place for a family vacation. The blue shamrock and gemstones is another must see family friendly restaurant with the best burgers and steak tips around. Only bad part of Lowell is when you aren't in the great city.
