I want to give an update because LasikPlus came very close to ruining my life. I had -1.5 vision in both eyes prior to lasik, but because they did a poor job vetting me, my vision is now -4.25. I was a poor candidate for lasik due to topographical issues in my corneas, but LasikPlus went full speed ahead, insisting that I was a prime candidate. Two other ophthalmologists have since told me that they were negligent in operating on me. I frankly wish I'd thought to sue them sooner, as I have post-lasik ecstasia as a result of going to them. Truly the biggest regret of my life, avoid this butcher shop with a 100 foot pole.

There was some expected stinging the first 1-2 hours post-op which can be alleviated with some comfort drops that they send you home with. They also provide other eye drops that you will need the next two weeks so that was great. Slept after putting in some comfort drops, and woke up with no discomfort and was able to see 20/20. Yay!

After wearing contacts and glasses for most of my life, I was interested in getting corrective eye…read moresurgery but price was an issue. My husband and I researched it extensively and learned of QualSight from other reviews. QualSight works with many providers and gets them to guarantee a rate (which is significantly lower than if you contact to provider directly, even if they claim to be offering a "deal"). Basically, they work like most insurance companies, working with providers to get the best deal in exchange for referring people to them. They also work with your insurance company. I qualified for discounted rates because I have BC/BS and signed up for Blue365 (if you have BC/BS, take a few minutes to do this before you call, if you can). I figured the call was free, so I made it. From "hello" the representative (Chris) I spoke with was very knowledgeable, polite, and informative. Frankly, in my objective opinion, it was one of the easiest, most comfortable and informative conversations I have had with an insurance company (and I do not make that claim lightly). There was no pressure, just information and he comfortably answered all of my questions. Upon verifying my insurance, he provided me with 4 local providers. He included the number of surgeries performed, the costs (and if they provided a year long warranty or life time warranty), locations, reviews, etc... He was very professional and did not promote any one provider (which is always a sign of a good company). The cost he quoted included EVERYTHING for the procedure for both of my eyes, including follow up surgeries (as I opted for the life time warranty), follow up appointments, etc... What is not included are the eye drops you need post-surgery and your typical annual eye exams for your life (but who would expect that?). The initial consultation is free (regardless of which provider you choose, so if you don't qualify, you are not out anything). Of note is that Chris was the representative assigned to us - so when either my husband or I had questions, we contacted him directly as opposed to sitting on hold for hours, pressing 3, then 4 (or whatever). We emailed him directly and while he wasn't always available, he responded in a timelier manner than I would have expected. Honestly, their customer service was exceptional. I was able to schedule my initial consult for a week after my first conversation with Chris. I had to spend that week out of contacts. During that initial check (which took about 2hrs in my case) it was determined that one of my eyes qualified for Lasik but the other (due to corneal scarring) did not, but I did qualify for PRK (a different procedure that eventually yields similar results). Despite this, the cost that I was quoted by QualSight did not change. At that point, I wanted to schedule my surgery as soon as possible in order to use our "flex spending money" toward the surgery from the previous year before we lost it. I was able to schedule it for two weeks later. As I type this, I am 5 days post surgery. From the beginning the representative at QualSight told me the exact price and it has not altered or deviated. They run a very transparent business. What I was told during that initial phone call has been what we have paid. I also have independent Eye insurance and I compared the savings through them to what I got through QualSIght - it was significant. My eye insurance company would have saved me 10% off of the procedure. QualSight saved me (quite literally) $2k (when I signed the paper work I saw what the Lasik company would have changed me). I would still encourage you to compare any savings you may get from your eye insurance, I am only reporting my experience. Both my husband and I researched this and one criticism of Lasik companies is that they offer "deals" but then add on based on the prescription strength, astigmatisms, etc... The add-ons can add up. With QualSight - everything is included in the price you are quoted. As I have said, I am 5 days post-procedure. My Lasik eye had a tough go (due to size of my cornea - it is very bruised), but by the next day I had almost 20/20 vision and it has only gotten better (I think I am better than 20/20 now, but my follow up is tomorrow). My PRK eye on track to heal and today was the first day where it was better (but that is to be expected) - and if you are told you need PRK, recovery is NOT as "painful" as they say it might be (it is just frustrating to have to wait to heal to see well). You just have to request an appointment blindly (no pun intended). I asked them specifically to NOT call me, and within seconds of clicking the submit button for more info (where I put in the comments to NOT call me, to please just email me the list of doctors because it wont show up on their site), they called me anyway. I couldn't get a word in, Tevin just kept talking with his sales pitch. Anyone with two brain cells knows that it isn't a HIPAA violation to ask for a doctor's name and NPI. Please retrain your staff on HIPAA guidelines and what is and isn't a violation. It's interesting because at least one of Juan's responses does get close to a violation. Maybe use that as an example.

But the overall feeling of assembly line health care stems from arrive/check in and wait. You're summoned to an exam station, administered to...and directed to a smaller waiting area...and wait some more. Then maybe another procedure...and wait. You can arrive on time at 7:40 a.m., but you'll wait. Plan on 3 hours plus. The killer was at one visit to arrange 2nd cataract surgery, I waited about an hour to sign paperwork in a waiting room that was in near rebellion. When I mentioned the vibe to the young lady doing the scheduling she said I was referring to a 'management thing.' Ok management-perhaps schedule fewer patients, find more spacious accommodations, hire more tech staff and you might slide with fewer folks at the reception desk, 'cause I'm not sure why it's 3 deep at the desk with one employee answering questions and the others staring at their screens. So, medical expertise, great. Organizational stuff, really bad, and it's been this way for years.

The man that really makes this very popular office what it is is Dr John Moy, a renowned cataract specialist. There are of course other competent doctors here but a few have come and gone. There are also a bunch of technician staff helping out with various eye health tests. This place is far from perfect though as the waits are usually long, and that's the only reason for the 1 star knock. It's not that they are slow, there are just a lot of patients per doctor due to demand for their good services. We always try to get early morning appointments and they usually have to be done 6 months and even a year in advance. Dr Moy is one of those doctors who is booked for the whole year if you're not already a patient. If there is some test that may not be covered by insurance (and there are only two that we have encountered), the staff always gives us a headsup first. Anyway, we are very happy with our eye health care here and the other doctors on staff we have seen are Dr Indre Rudaitis and Dr Kaushik Annam, a glaucoma specialist.

Because, I was able to work from home one Friday, I stopped in Uptown Family Vision for an eye exam. I immediately noticed a significant upgrade in the equipment used to examine my eyes. Since Dr. Andrew Paik and his wife took over the practice, they upgraded all the equipment and it is now state of the art. As a result, I had the most thorough eye exam in my life.
