Last time we were there, there were several other dogs with their owners and everybody was chill. This time we got there on a Thursday morning. There was absolutely no one there until right when we were leaving when a dog walker brought in about 15 dogs. They were all very well behaved. The grass has grown a bit and dried out a bit but nothing that made me concerned about getting foxtail or burrs. I love this park for its simplicity and the ability for me to walk with my dogs in an enclosed space, and they can run, but not out of my sight.

Some days there may be lots of big rambunctious dogs, along with some cute little woofers; but most of the time when I stop it's just us. The park is alway pretty empty which is good, because my dogs tend to be a little timid and antisocial. It's so peaceful and relaxing when it's just us. The park provides poopy bags. I think most people just bring their own though and leave them, I do sometimes for whoever may have forgotten their own. Whatever the case we practice on keeping it very clean by picking up our pets waste. As for parking it's usually some street parking always near....one more thing on the side gate of the park there is a fence with lots of cactus and sweet fruits I like to enjoys every so often also.

We had the Princess with us and as we were leaving mapped out the nearest dog park. Lo and behold, it was right next door! It's not a huge park but there's enough room to throw a ball and run around in. Parking is one the rocks right in front of the gate on Main Street. I suppose you could also park in the Ferry Terminal parking lot although I'm not sure if that's okay or not. There are two entrances to the park. The main entrance on Main Street has a dual gate entrance while the entrance on the Ferry Terminal side is a single gate. Dual gates are my preference because it adds a layer of safety should one gate accidentally not latch properly. We found a couple of dog toys and there were several bowls with water. There were also numerous gallon jugs with water in them. There is no water fountain nor restroom onsite, so it appears that other pet parents are taking empty jugs and filling them. The encampments and motorhomes that other wrote about in 2022 and 2023 are no longer there, so the area feels relatively safe.

Biggest problem is that it is difficult to get to assuming your not living nearby. Alameda is such a drag to drive around in - I'd say its almost as bad as downtown San Francisco in terms of driving 1 mile will cost you 12 minutes. Lots of stop signs and tiny narrow streets. Crowded feeling. Your dog will love it. If he is cooped up in a tiny apartment there is space to run. Also important for your dog to socialize and do some flea swapping with the next dog. They love that.

Follow the directions of the signs - follow the weight limit (don't care if your big dog is good with small dogs, there is a reason we seek a small dog haven, some small dogs get extremely anxious around big dogs), no kids under 8 (and don't get mad at the dog or the owner if your young child can't handle being jumped on or barked at. It is a DOG park). Plenty of water, no poop bags but there are pick ups scoopers so if you run out, you'll still be able to pick up your dog's poop if you don't have bags with you. Great group of regulars. Most dogs and humans have a great time!

Looking on a map, it would be near 8th St & Portola Ave. Exact address is 1300 8th St. I haven't seen other dog parks, so I don't how this one compares. I've been here a few times with a friend with a small dog. Also, I walk by alot as it's near the sidewalk. The Dog Park is one huge fenced in area, and a separate smaller area for small dogs. It's sand, grassy areas with some trees. There's water and some places to sit. I think it's cool that ARPD set up this dog park. (ARPD- Alameda Recreation And Park Department)

The trail is peppered with numerous trolls. Kids and young at heart adults would love this sort of thing. The trolls are made of all different materials and so have varied personalities. There were countless trolls but I took a few photos of my favorites. City folk would love this place. If you are cooped up in a tiny two bedroom apartment with no back yard and no privacy this is just the place to go. Even though I've got a massive private backyard diligently maintained with lush landscaping I still enjoy this place. Came around sunset and the way light filtered through the branches of soaring redwoods was majestic. Lots of shady paths but they were a bit muddy - so don't wear your favorite Dunks. The entrance is hard to find and parking is mostly street. People walking here were friendly and many took their dogs. Kids seemed to enjoy the swing area toward the back best. Rocky's market area would be a perfect place to park. Then walk up the hill and look for the public hidden staircases. Elderly might have trouble with stairs. Wheelchair people I didn't see here. Moms with strollers - I'm not so sure - there are lots of roots and hills and parking might be a little ways away. If your blind be sure and bring a person who can tell you how beautiful things are. If a person was blind from birth I wouldn't know what to say. I once met a person as such and had a hard time describing anything as there is no point of reference ever. If you want to recreate this kind of feeling in your own backyard do as I do: Plant narrow evergreens around the entire perimeter of your yard. Then add some bird of paradise and palm trees. Presto! every time you enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning in your yard you have privacy and even in the winter it is green and beautiful.

I want to get this off my chest but I'm only going to leave it for 1 week…read more Three things: I'm not writing an essay for school so my thoughts might jump around; second, I'm not here to bad mouth dog owners but that said, I have to say what I think; and three, I'm not an expert, obviously, so these are only my own personal opinions. I know that the dog owners who come to Ohlone Park (which, btw, is a fantastic place) are into the necessity for neutering and spaying (which I will now refer to as NS) their pets; but I am definitely not one of them. And in Finland and several Northern and Western European countries, routine, preventative spaying and neutering for dogs is not mandatory or standard practice, and is often legally restricted or viewed as unnecessary unless medically required. In the US it is neces-sary. In 1973, an estimated 13.5 million animals were euthanized annually. Increased public aware-ness, spaying/neutering programs, and the growth of no-kill networks drove this number down by over 60. Last year is was only a littler over 300,000. I guess the spouse of someone who works in a shelter never wants to say, So how was your day? And responsible people in the dog world urge you to NS your pets. I will never NS my dog, I never have and I never will. My only responsibility to society is NO PUPPIES UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. I have always followed this rule. But in the dog park, people lose track of why dogs are NS. Which is so that so many have to be euthanized. I don't think dog owners realize that neutering is a hundred years old and that vasectomies and tubal ligation are much better ways to keep the population down. Or that they themselves are responsible dog owners whose pets mean the world to them and they'd never have unwanted puppies. I think the whole NS procedure is horrible. I have a Great Pyrenees and in the past, he has pulled the leash so hard, I couldn't hold on to it. I'm old but that has nothing to do with it. That fucking dog is powerful and I think anyone of any age would have a problem. The last time, he pulled me off my porch and ran off after God knows what. Meanwhile, I tripped down the steps and fell onto the ivy (and not the concrete). So I'm in the dog park and a woman takes out a bag of treats and he goes ballistic. Well, he needs a tough hand. I shouted at him, I slapped his face to get his attention and I kept hollering DO NOT PULL, DO NOT PULL. This is something he can nev-er do. I have to be able to walk him without worrying if he's going to yank me off my feet and he has to listen to what I say, no matter what. I have had huge dogs in the past and none of them has ever done this. Anyway another dog owner, whose husky mounts my dog or tries to said that the problem was that he was he too big for me and she'd heard he hadn't been N. His behavior has nothing at all to do with neutering but with training. If I am not tough he won't listen and he's getting way better. When my bullmastiff misbehaved once, don't remember what he did, I pulled him down to the ground, placed one hand around his neck and the other near his back legs and I screamed NO NO NO! My bullmastiff wasn't a child, he was a dog, and he needed to be trained to behave. Same with my Pyr. If it came down to it, I'd rather never go to Ohlone than neuter any of my dogs. I don't think realize that when you neuter, this is what happens: " For a giant breed like the Great Pyre-nees, neutering permanently alters his endocrine system, bone growth timeline, and metabolic rate for the rest of his life. Because giant breeds take a remarkably long time to mature, withdrawing testosterone too early completely disrupts how his skeleton and muscles knit together." There is then a long section about the other negative effects. I always think if neutering is so great, maybe they should neuter men, make them less ag-gressive, less war hungry. Of course, people would think that I was insane to even suggest that in jest; but with a dog it's great. Well, I think it's horrible, it's like amputating their life force. Why not train an aggressive dog to behave rather than create a passive dog that won't need training be-cause he's not a dog anymore. Worse yet, they pass on their so-called knowledge and I meet peo-ple who say, without thinking, I haven't NS yet. Yes, I think NS is horrible and if it came down to it, if my dog were too aggressive with other males, I would no longer go to Ohlone. After all it's only a small dog park really, it's not the world. My Pyr is my life. Luckily he is okay with other dogs and hasn't ever really been a serious fight. I've also noticed that in a fight he leaps up the barks but he doesn't open his mouth. In fact he got into a scuffle with dog and I had to take him to the vet and it cost me $100. Also, and again it seems like dog owners don't know this, some dogs are not meant to play with other dogs, or to socialize with them. Instead they have been bred to keep them away.
